Australia gives extra funds to help Khmer Rouge tribunal

October 22, 2008
ABC Radio Australia

Australia has announced it's giving almost three and a half million US dollars to help fund the United Nations-backed Khmer Rouge tribunal in Cambodia.

Five senior Khmer Rouge leaders remain in detention for their alleged roles in carrying out the genocidal policies of the former regime between 1975 and 1979.

Australia has previously provided almost three million dollars for the tribunal's operations.

The Australian government says it wants to see the trials completed in a timely manner and according to internationally acceptable standards of justice, fairness and due legal process.

Funding problems and repeated delays in convening trials have prompted fears that the accused, who are aging and in ill health, may die before they can be brought to justice.
