Cambodia and Thailand say no to joint border patrol

Cambodia, Thailand Break Accords

Phnom Penh, Oct 18 (Prensa Latina) - Cambodia and Thailand broke off the agreement through which they shared 17.6 square miles surrounding Ta Moan Thom Hindu temple on the common border, regional media reported Saturday.

According to a report of Radio Free Asia Cambodian service Phnom Penh does not agree with the concept of joint patrols in spite of the fact that the agreement was signed last Thursday to establish a provisional cease fire.

Neither army command has put the terms of the agreement into practice.

Observers have noted that Thai and Cambodian soldiers have remained on their bases and the situation has generally returned to normal.

Meanwhile Si Sa Ket neighbors, the Thai province where the sanctuary is located, expect to have progress on the next round of contact between Cambodian and Thai leaders next Tuesday.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hu Sen declared Friday that border clashes with Thailand for the control of the area surrounding Preah Vihear temple will not result in "a large scale war."

My personal feeling is that in order to avoid another coup by top military officiers, the current Thai government needs to make the border clash happen at any cost. So, the Thai public would focus more on border clash than the coup itself. It will bring a bad image to the coup planners if they wish to go while border stand off still continues. It would make thing complicated for coup planners to mobilize the troops for the coup. The public would punish them. That's why Thai PM needs to get closer to the local Thai commanders. PM won't prefer clash, but just a stand off and sometimes fighting because soldiers are human and their patiece is limited. It's a political game in Thai politics. The question is do Khmers want to play the game with them or do we really need to think about the territory? The latter is to have international mediation, but Thai government won't choose it at least until the threat from coup planners is over.

Whether Khmer government wants to play the game with them or not, lives of Khmer soldiers need to be protected and treated fairly.

If a large scale conflict happens, Thais would be united, and the military will take the government completely. Somchai never wants this to happen either. It's a tough situation there. If coup fails, there is a high risk for the coup planners and those behind them.

In my opinion, Khmers should not involve with their game for the best interest of the nation. Thais ALWAYS get advantages while we were in troubles. Why not we? We should focus more on economic development and leave the works to the international communities because we have law and peace accord. Just like Singapore, the more we have strong economics and humand resources, no one would touch us. Hun Sen should really think about this.

We have the map recognised long ago till the 15 July Thai invaded our territory. Why should we be afraid of, bring it to ICJ and UN Securty Council to tell the Thai to back off from our territory, and at the same time we have right to protect our territory, so both means to solve this problem. Diplomatic and military action if they dare to encroach our territorial integrity. NO JOINT PATROL!!!!!!!! Don't trust siams they are always liars. Bear in mind that they do differently from what they said. Not reliable!
Pure khmer

I agree with 3:02 AM. We have the internationally recognized map based on the last 1907 france-Siam treaty that the even the Thai recognized it until July 2008 when the PAD stirred up this border trouble. We should go back to ICJ or the UN as soon as possible. Stop screwing around with these bilateral talk nonsenses that the Thai use as a pretext to avoid international condamnation for invading Cambodia a smaller victim country.
