Phnom Penh - Cambodia has appointed former soldier turned journalist Men Sam An as its first female deputy prime minister, the politician confirmed Thursday.
The 55-year-old, who represents the south-western province of Svay Rieng, was a senior minister in the previous cabinet and said she is honoured by the promotion.
Men Sam An became part of Cambodian folklore in the 1970s, marshalling troops on the Vietnam border against the Khmer Rouge with what her comrades describe as extraordinary bravery.
She subsequently became an important member of the ruling Cambodian People's Party, which was returned with an increased majority in national elections in July, and has also worked as a journalist for party publications.
'I became a soldier when I was 16. This honour shows that women can achieve anything if they have support,' she said.
In Cambodia, seven deputy prime ministers jointly served under Prime Minister Hun Sen last term.
Democratic elections resumed in Cambodia in 1993 after nearly three decades of civil war and are held every five years.

Just talk and discuss among yourselves: Who is running the country? Therefore, irrespective of the number of deputy prime ministers (or mistresses), Prime Minister Hun Sen will be in charge of the country. Of course, the prime minister himself does not have any other tools (or mechanism) to fool the world community.
She is not the best as the matter of fact. But when listening to her talkings is more reasonable. No complaint about that appointment, as she is better than other playboys deputies any way. So just let her to do her job, and see how she goes.
While you unemployed whiners contribute lots of venom to this blog, you are contributing *nothing* to Cambodia or the Cambodian people. So instead of complaining about Men Sam An, you should instead beg to clean her shoes.

I've lived in the states for most of my life. Whenever I go to srok Khmer, my mother warned me not to talk about politic. Then, I asked myself--why?? Overhere in the USA people are free to express themselves, why can't Khmer in srok Khmer have the same right??
After a few visits to srok Khmer, met Khmer people personally in the states, and follow politic online--like reading from this blog; I came to realization, democracy in srok Khmer compared to the USA and other western countries can never be achieved. You know why??
It is because politic and culture are intertwined! In Khmer politic, ordinary people like to bitch about everything. When their bitching is not loud enough to satisfy their ego, they put down and insult other people. End results lead to negative consequences.
Rumor has it that a bus load of loud mouth want to be politicians took a dive over the cliff on the way to Kompong Som.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all about promoting democracy (Western Style)and Human Right.
