Cambodian and Thai troops suffered injuries during an exchange of gunfire Friday afternoon near Preah Vihear temple, in the first real military fighting of the prolonged border standoff, say Cambodian officials.
"One Cambodian was shot in the arm, and we believe one or two Thai soldiers were injured," according to Yim Phim, the commander of brigade 43, which is stationed in the area.
He said the incident started at around 3:00pm when about a dozen Thai soldiers approached a Cambodian army encampment at Phnom Troap, just a couple kilometres from the World-Heritage listed temple, and demanded troops there leave.
"They showed them a Thai-made map and told the Cambodians to get off the land. An argument went on for a while," said Yim Phim. "The Thais then withdrew about ten meters and started firing."
"Thai soldiers first fired an M-79 (grenade launcher), and Cambodians shot back with a B-40 (grenade launcher). Then both sides fired with machine guns," he said.
He said the Thai soldiers withdrew across the border after dark, around 5:30, while the Cambodian soldiers remained in their original position.
"In that area, soldiers from both countries used to stay close to each other, but the situation has changed and now everyone is on high alert."
Srey Doek, the highest-ranking military official stationed inside the Preah Vihear temple complex, told the Post Saturday morning that his Thai counterpart had requested to meet him Saturday afternoon in the local pagoda, but he still did not have authority from his superiors to attend.
Cambodian government and army leaders have thrown a wet blanket on the first reported violent military clash since the standoff began more than 11 weeks ago, characterizing it as a localized incident that would not threaten to spread to other points along the border.
Chea Morn, head commander of Military Region 4, which includes Preah Vihear province, corroborated that "a clash", as described by the brigade commander, had taken place, but said it was "just a small problem... and would be resolved."
Council of Ministers spokesman Phay Siphan said the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs would contact its Thai counterpart to discuss to incident, but called it "a problem between the soldiers stationed in that area... and not a problem between the governments."
"The government's position is still that diplomatic negotiations must be used to solve this dispute."
Just earlier this week, in the sidelines of the UN General Assembly summit in New York, top foreign affairs officials from both sides reiterated the commitment of their governments to resolving the dispute peacefully.

The foreign ministry on Saturday issued an official protest to the Cambodian government over an alleged border incursion and subsequent clash that left three soldiers injured, Thai officials said Saturday.
On Friday a Thai military patrol encountered Cambodian troops allegedly situated about one kilometre inside Thai territory near the Phreah Vihear temple.
"According to the Thai military the Cambodians were definitely inside Thai territory, and the Cambodian side opened fire first," said foreign ministry spokesman Tharit Charungvat.
Two Thai soldiers and one Cambodian were wounded in the brief firefight on the border.
The foreign ministry's permanent secretary Virsakdi Footrakul plans to submit a formal letter of protest to the Cambodian charge d'affaires in Bangkok over the incident at 5 p.m. Saturday, said Tharit.
Both countries claim a 4.6-square-kilometre plot of land adjoining the temple.
The spat escalated from a diplomatic row to a potential military conflict in mid-July when three Thais were detained for entering the disputed temple territory, and both sides dispatched military troops to the area.

You still don't get it! The military stand off between two nations cannot be solved overnight, realistically. It is not that easy as much as the gangwar occurred in town. Fundamentally, it is not against the idea of waging war against Thailand, but not at the moment. The war is the last resort after the exhaustion of diplimatic remedy. In this circumstance, you cannot just generalise the issue and accuse in general those who are involved in that negotiation. You gotta be more specific.
Cambodian government can chose to be peaceful, to be mute, and to be sympathetic for the Thai politic and their leaders and it will not change a thing on the issue of Thai army occupation of Cambodia because the Thai politic dictate that their military must occupy Cambodian territories base on the Thai map that was drawn up with “American technical assistance.” By mentioning the word American, the Thai politicians are trying to pull the American into the Thai-Cambodian border conflict and to bolster their claim to all the Cambodian territories currently occupy by the Thai army! Why the question of going to war always direct at Cambodia but not Thailand?
Please remember that Cambodia never want to go to war in the first if it weren't for the Thai ultra-nationalists who violated Cambodian sovereignty and there wouldn't be any Cambodian military stationing at Thai-Cambodian border. Insurgents kill two soldiers in South
(BangkokPost.com) - Insurgents opened fire at an army patrol in the southern province of Pattani on Saturday morning, killing two soldiers.
Six troops were patrolling on a local road when an unknown number of insurgents started firing at them at around 6am.
The two groups then exchanged fire before insurgents broke off the engagement and retreated.

When KR was there, they never dared to encroach a cm of khmer land, but just KR dissolved they used all forms of stealing and finally this last option grabbing our land. I am proud that my khmer compatriots at the front line acted to self-defend. Khmer patience has its own limit, I can tell you. I am sure Cambodians now are in the feeling of Unity. We are a very calm nation, but patience has its own limit, I repeat again and again. I don't want the cold war to affect our country anymore, though you said it is not over. It is not over in other parts of the globe but not in Cambodia. We consider it over. Thai cannot use this illegal map which was just drawn by American technical Advisor to prove as the map. It is just like we have land title and the thai just has the illegal paper. We have the map agreed at the ICJ the Hague and Paris Peace Agreement in 1991. Thai should respect khmer territorial integrity. They should back off from khmer border.

= Do you honestly think that only Cambodia will suffer economically if the war breaks out between Cambodia and Thailand? The fact is Cambodia and Thailand will suffer economically and the whole Southeast Asia will have instability, which will drive away foreign investor to other part of the world! The sad fact is the whole Cambodia is still structure base on wartime environment such as the living condition of Cambodia people is no different from the cold war and the whole Cambodian economy is no different from the cold war because Cambodia is still being exploited for cheap natural resources and cheap labor! It won’t change a damn thing if Cambodia chose to go to war right now! But what will change is the determination of the Cambodian people to protect whatever they have left from the cold war!
As a little reminder, King Sihanouk has so much fear about Vietnam war and he wanted so much for Cambodia to stay as a neutral country and not join the fight in the Vietnam war but at the end, Cambodia plunge into the Vietnam War and million of Cambodian people died in the war, starvation, and genocide! Now Cambodia under Hun Xen leadership has so much fear for war too and he insisted on peaceful bilateral talk with Thai leaders to end border conflict but at the end, the Thai army continue to occupy more Cambodian territories after every bilateral talk! So tell me what is the next fear for Cambodian leaders and Cambodian people?
People can chose to run away from fear all their life but if they don’t chose to confront their fear and one day fear will conquer over them and what is the fucken point of enjoying life when fear conquer all?

Consider yourself Khmer no more, all of you. You're all still full of yourself. Putting country first doesn't necessarily mean going to war and look tough. It means looking out for the best of the country. Cambodia can't afford another war at this moment. The only thing we need is economic development. It's very sad that Khmer are still stupid and stubborn like our ancestors that fucked each other up because they can't understand and respect one another. That's the problem plagued Khmer for centuries, EGO, STUBBORNNESS, and LACK OF RESPECT.
It's easy for you who live overseas to want to go to war but you're not because you live thousand of miles away from the battlefields where people in Cambodia are the ones that have to face the reality of war if it happens.
I truly wish that you can change your frame of mind. If not, I wish that your children will not have the same mentality as you. I hope they will love all Khmer regardless of the difference they might have.
Don't worry about any foreigners coming to take over Cambodia. They don't have to do any killing in order to take Cambodia because Khmer will kill Khmer already if the old Khmer mentality keeps going. So, they just have to let that happen and come in when Khmer finished killing each other.
