Fighting breaks out [-Thailand broke its pledge not to launch an offensive first?]

BangkokPost.com

Foreign Minister Sompong Amornvivat urged Thai nationals in Cambodia to leave as soon as possible Wednesday after a gun-battle between troops along the disputed border broke out in the afternoon.

"Thai businessmen who have no need to be in Cambodia now, please rush back to Thailand," Sompong told reporters.

"We have our evacuation plan ready," he added.

His statement came after the troops reportedly exchanged gun fire for about 10 minutes at Kantalak district, Si Sa Ket province at around 2.30pm.

Cambodia’s Preah Vihear governor Prieb Tan claimed that Thailand started shooting at the Cambodian army first. Thai army spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd, meanwhile, did not rush to any conclusion. He said the army was verifying information and would hold a press conference on the matter.

On Tuesday, Col Sansern reiterated that Thailand will not launch an offensive first, but if Cambodia encroaches into Thailand’s territory, the Thai army is ready to confront any incident to protect the country’s sovereignty.

Meanwhile, Thailand's air force has the fighter jets ready in case violence erupts further.

"Normally we have fighter jets on stand-by at various regional headquarters ready for operation within five minutes, but under the current circumstances we have increased our readiness," Group Captain Montol Suchookorn told AFP. "I do hope the use of force is the last resort."

Prieb Tan must be lying because the news stated that Cambodian soldiers fired first.

Anyway, I would like to see how Cambodian soldiers would win the fight...

Not to mention that it'll be more fun to see those stupid Khmers in Cambodia government crying out for help with their white lies that Thais threatened they first. lol

It does not matter who fired first shot. Both sides surely claim that the other side fired first. The fight has just begun and it is hard to stop from now on.

Khmer have to fight to keep what we 've got, but not to steal like the siem robbers. For nearly a thousand years their culture of robbing and killing has not stopped.

It doesn't matter how big their army is, we must fight to the end. If we we do it now, t6hey will move in more and more.

Unofficial information said that 10 Thai soldiers are being held as hostages under Cambodian Army Force. That is a good indication of the start of the war.

Heavy fighting erupted Wednesday between Cambodian and Thai troops near Preah Vihear temple, a Cambodian military commander said as a standoff over disputed border territory that has simmered since July turned violent.

"The shooting is very heavy now - this is very serious," said General Chea Saran, deputy commander of infantry operating on the frontier between the two countries. "I am meeting with my commanders before making orders."

An unnamed military officer at the Ministry of Defence also confirmed that the two sides were engaged in battle at Veal Antri, saying that a Thai helicopter had fired on the Cambodian lines, with the Cambodians responding with anti-aircraft weapons.

Tensions have been building on the frontier since Thai troops reportedly crossed the border into Cambodia in July. Several rounds of crisis talks, the most recent occurring on Monday between Thai Foreign Minister Sompong Amornvivat and his Cambodian counterpart, Hor Namhong, and Prime Minister Hun Sen, have failed to find a solution.

Soldiers from both sides engaged in a brief firefight at Veal Antri on October 3, wounding three troops. Two Thai soldiers were badly wounded when they stepped on land mines two days later while patrolling near the Cambodian front lines.

Following Monday's negotiations, Hun Sen threatened to turn the border into a "battle zone" if Thai troops did not leave Cambodia. Cambodian commanders said Tuesday that Thailand withdrew its soldiers - a claim that was disputed by Bangkok.

Loun An, deputy governor of Oddar Meanchey province, said Cambodian and Thai troops have shelled each other, and some 40 Thai troops have been surrounded by Cambodian soldiers.

Ten Thai troops near Preah Vihear temple have also surrendered, according to wire service reports.

LOL, they surrounded and surrendered.

Go Khmer go!!
