First trial of former Khmer Rouge leader delayed, says court

Phnom Penh - Legal wrangling will delay until next year the much anticipated trial of the first former Khmer Rouge leader scheduled to face justice before the joint UN-Cambodian court, the court said in a statement Thursday.

Court officials had hoped the trial of the former commandant of the S-21 torture centre where up to 16,000 people were interrogated and taken for execution, Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch, could have begun within weeks.

But an August appeal by the co-prosecutors against the closing order issued by the co-investigating judges and the legal processes that entailed now made that impossible, the court said.

'Such further filings will require additional time for all parties to respond. All documents must be translated into one or more official (court) languages,' it said in the statement.

It said a date for an initial hearing of the 66-year-old defendant was not now expected to be set until January.

'Successfully conducting trials of this significance is a complex process, and the court recognizes that it can be frustrating for the millions who have been waiting for decades to see justice done,' said the statement.

'Nevertheless, each step of the legal process must be followed carefully, and conducted in line with the highest standards of justice. This will also ensure the most enduring legacy for the Cambodian Courts.'

Five elderly former leaders are currently in custody awaiting trial on charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes. Up to 2 million Cambodians perished during the ultra-Maoists' 1975-79 rule.

The movement's leader, Pol Pot, died at home in 1998. Military commander Ta Mok died in hospital in 2006.

Have anyone ever though THAT this khmer rouge trial is just a joke, just a cover up? IF, this trial was true and just. It would have been done with long time ago!

Look at iraq, saddam was hung and case closed in what ? two/three years...

so, as long as cambodia/cambodian is under vietnam/hun sen fake democratic rule. Forget about justice or khmer rouge trial.

7:22 you traitor. If Samdach did not liberate your head (and should I say your family's head) Cambodia would not be where it is today. Now tell me who brought down Khmer Rouge and end civil war in Cambodia peacefully by persuading them to give up arms? It is not you, or your beloved shit uncle Xam Ransy, but our Samdach. Without him, this trial would not even exist, not even in your wildest dream. If your head cannot see the dedication of Samdach to find justice, then why would Samdach convene this court? No one back this court in the beginning? But Samdach insists on it, and now everyone line up to donate money.

Why would people always say VN this VN that? Give me some evidence. Your head is too fussy and you fall for your uncle shit Xam Ransy propaganda. Where is VN controlling Cambodia? If you say China control Cambodia, probably it makes more sense than your pointless post. Because China has so great influence in Asia.

Oh, last thing, if not for Samdach liberating the country, your head probably won't exist in this world. Now you want to blame Samdach who is your second father? Traitor...

My beloved 7:46PM!

I am not entirely sure that you are one of the Killingfield survivors or not?

If you have a little more time to think or ask yourself a simple question, did Khmer willingly kill each other till no Khmer live on this earth?

It took two whole weeks for Youn's and Heng Sarin's soldiers to invade and reach the ghost town of Phnom Pehn. After that they all stayed there without moving forward, and waited 5 or 6 months till all the Khmer Rouge soldiers are gone. Slowly and eventually Youn's are arrived at Pursat and Battangbong Provinces.

Once again, here is my other simple question, if the Khmer Rouge intentionally wanted to kill all Khmer people, they had more plenty of time to kill. Why not they killed us? lamentfully and evidently speaking, they violently killed almost the Eastern Khmer people.

7.46pm,

you are a CPP member, or supporter. That is why you kiss cpp asses. You don't care what is right or wrong.
Or do you care the truth behind the facts. You just decide to be blind and stupid without investigation why so many khmer die and why vietcong came into cambodia. And you don't even know that the enemy of the nation through history is still controlling and enslaving khmer.

Curruptions today in cambodia is not just about money or power, but khmer enemy is getting their revenge and causing the suffering of khmer people until cambodia is like the southern part of cambodia " khmer krom ".

7.46pm, you need to read more, and you do need anger management class. good luck bro
