With some polls leaning toward the Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama, Cambodian-Americans who support Republican John McCain say they remain hopeful as the race enters its final week.
"We see that Obama is leading now, but we still have hope,"said Kim Meas Koy, who lives in Minnesota. "We want the Republican Party to win the election, because their foreign policies would focus more on the Cambodian issue."
McCain, who was a pilot during the Vietnam War and is viewed as familiar with Southeast Asian politics, has found wide support among Cambodian-Americans. But with Obama leading in polls from the battleground of Virginia, McCain has to make up ground before US voters go to the polls Nov. 4.
Chourng Sophal, who lives in Virginia, told VOA Khmer that even with the numbers favoring Obama his support for McCain had not wavered.
"For me, I'll still voting for McCain, because I don't really know Obama's party," he said.
Democratic supporter Pak Channa, who heads the Angkor Association in the US, said he was voting against the Republicans, who "love war."
"Nixon had the Vietnam War, George Bush had the Gulf War, and now George W. Bush is having war gain," Pak Channa said.
For many Cambodians, though, it is McCain's war record that reassures them.
"John McCain was a pilot during the Vietnam War, and he was locked up in a Vietnamese jail during the 1970s," said Rany Lushinski, who also lives in Virginia and is a member of Cambodian-Americans for Human Rights and Democracy. "I think he can strongly understand the cruelty of the Vietnamese communist government, so it could be possible that when he wins the election he can help Cambodia."
Lushinski's views echoes those of others who feel the Republicans pay more attention to Cambodian issues, while Democratic supporters among Cambodian-Americans have said they like the Democrats' view on interior policy and dealing with an economic crisis that has swept the globe in recent weeks.

Please, when did any US president gave a hoot about cambodia? Just because john maccain fought in the Vietnam war makes him sympathize with enemies of vietnam? Let me break it you, McCain help Clinton normalize relations with vietnam! US do business with vietnam on a regular basis. The US are also allies with thailand. Are you guys expecting they cover our backs while we reconquer khmer lands? I understand your first interest is the khmer motherland but you fail to see the overall picture. The US no longer needs to pursue a policy of agression and isolation in the international theater. We need to take another direction in solving our problems and pulling our ass out of places that we don't need to be in.
Vote Obama, 2008

Vote for McCain...
Most Khmers in Fresno, CA will vote for McCain.
I do not like both of them very much but I will select McCain because he stands firm on Iraq war. I don't like war as much as you do. But withdraw the US troops soon like Obama's plan will kill more people, not US people but innocent Iraqi people. Remember Khmers people were killed by Khmer Rouge?
Hahahaaaaa...
I love the free country. You all are luckier than us in Cambodia. You can vote freely and talk freely.
This is what I think. McCain or US gov. will not do anything big for Cambodia. Why does he care so much about Cambodia? USA will do bussiness with 70 millions Viets, but not 14 millions Khmers. USA will not destroy relationship with Viet right now just because of Khmer. If you vote for him, please vote for other issues that he stands for, and stop thinking that he will help Khmer.
For Obama, he has less experiences internally and externally. I think a powerful country in the world needs a leader who has enough experiences to take care both inside and outside of his house.
But vote for anyone you like. I heard that you can also vote for youself in the ballot, is it true?

Hey! Neak Takeo, kom luork drae oy yuon OK?!
I'll vote for Mc Cain.
Mr.Obama will win the election for 2008...Not because he's black or he's white.Because he's the choosing one and Remember Mr.Obama do not Run the Country alone...with Congressman and the Nation Supports.
May God Bless the U.S.A
Oh! My God!
Shame, Shame!
dumb people vote for obama. he looks stupid.
Real Khmer doesn't vote, only fake one does.
No one know for sure.If fake or Not?
Only time can tell.(4years)
I guess most khmer in Fresno are dumbasses. McCain's own pollster said that he hopes the bush voters, mostly non-college type, or rather uneducated will still support McCain. How do you like being categorized as a dumbass?
Unless most of Khmer Fresno makes more than 230,000 USD a year, don't vote for McCain. I doubt many Khmer makes that much. McCain don't want redistribution of wealth, or any so called social program. So long social security, so long medicare or medicaid program. So long houing for the less fortunate. McCain wants laissaifare economics. To him, it's fuck you if you can't pay to support yourself. college tuition assistant? fuck you if you can't pay. Only smart people like bush*sarcasm) can pay for yale.
Any miniority group that supports McCain is either stupid, ignorant, or plain out dubmasses. Shoot yourself in the foot, why don't ya?
Interesting to see minority would vote for Republican especially McCain. Not only that, it is very interesting to see minority registered Republican. Why?
What are they thinking?
Maybe "Republican" make them feel "Majority"
Obama is fake and he'll let other countries run America to the ground. Where does that $650 millions of those fund raising come from? anyone knows? and where did really he born? Do you know? Not a single word. The press may be about the ecomomic and stuff, but they forgot to find out the real truth where the future President of United stated really was born and It could be anywhere. Look! If he can hide those facts from you, might as well get ready for more. Good or bad, will take McCain. At least we know that we'll be free and as long as we are free, there is no need for a government's hand out money. By the way, if you cann't be your self sufficent, you should loose your right of vote temporary. isn't that fair? Cambodian may not be making $ 250,000 a year , but good Cambodian certainly don't want to be seen as longing for a hand out either. We'll stand up on our own and we'll go with McCain and Pailin. It's not nice to make someone ( like bama ) to take away someone 's money to give it to you. Isn't it? Now go get a job! and stop longing for a nonsence!
It's called " Pride " and knowing to do what's right.
It doesn't matter, if your mother is sick or your wife is drying of starving. If you go and steal or rob somebody for the money to get your mother or your wife back on their feet. You still commit a crime in someway and it's wrong. It just should be that way. It's the same way with Obama and Joe Biden. They forgot that the other side is also suffering dremendously and there is no ethic to it. Go with Obama? you should say good by to America the Capitalist and welcome to America the Socialist! and socialist is just like Maxist and Communist. Since when The American constitustion allows you to be the communist? All American citizen should know that better than anyone, especally Obama nd Joe biden.
