PHNOM PENH, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Two Cambodian soldiers were killed during Wednesday afternoon's two-hour gunfire exchange between Cambodian and Thai troops at the border area, said Cambodian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hor Namhong.
Two others were wounded in the "weapon clash," which started around 2:25 p.m. local time (0725 GMT) near the Phnom Trop in the Veal Intry area, about 2,000 meters west of the ancient Preah Vihear Temple, according to the minister.
Meanwhile, Cambodian troops detained 10 Thai soldiers and have provided food for them, he said at a press conference held at his ministry.
"We will hand over the detainees to Thailand, if they request us to do so," he added.
In addition, the minister confirmed that both countries will conduct regional military meeting Thursday, but didn't mention where and who will host the meeting.
"Cambodia has the right of defending its own territory," he added.
In July, tensions ran high after the ancient Preah Vihear Temple was awarded world heritage status by UNESCO, angering nationalists in Thailand who still claim ownership of the site.
The tension later turned into a military stalemate, in which upto 1,000 Cambodian and Thai troops faced off for six weeks. In mid-August, most troops evacuated and just a few dozen soldiers stationed near the temple.
Bilateral talks to discuss withdrawing troops from around the temple were postponed late August amid political turmoil in Thailand.
In October at the border area, at least one Cambodian soldier and two Thai troops were wounded during an exchange of gunfire, and two other Thai soldiers were seriously injured after stepping on a landmine.

Those 13 Thai soldiers should be treated well. They might not want to be there to fight, but they had no option. Seems that they did not want to do it since the start of agression on 15 July. It is their government who sent its people to fullfill its greedy territory grabbing from neighboring country. It looks like thai's never got enough stealing land from Cambodia. Time to address this dispute to the international community for intervention. Thai government will definitely hide the thick face grabbing neighbor's land. Why are you so greedy? I would like to send my deep condolences to the families of our two fallen heroes who courageouly defened our country from the saim's agressions. We must treat the captured siam soldiers well as we are not cowards like them who shoots unarmed Khmer men, women and children all these years.
