MODESTO, Calif. -- Stanislaus County supervisors have approved a proposal for a Buddhist temple outside of Modesto.

Supervisors voted Tuesday to give the green light to the Wat Cambodian Church to build the complex west of Modesto.

The approval comes after the county's Planning Commission turned down plans for the complex because of concerns about traffic and other issues.

Cambodian people in this part of California do not get along. In fact, there are three Cambodian Buddhist temple in the area but the Khmer population there is only about 5,000, which is very small, and a large number of them converted to other religions such as Christianity and such.

A lot of people worked very hard to make this happen, both Cambodian and non, Buddhist and other. There was an outpouring of support from the larger community. To gain that support, it was necessary to reach out for it, and be open to it when it was offered. Objections to the project were sometimes genuinely about farming etc. while others were (thinly veiled) prejudice. Several of the neighbors spoke in support of the project after being invited to meet the temple members and monks at a "potluck."

I live in Sacramento, close to Modesto. I heard there are 3 temples in Modesto? I don't like it. I think they are out to make money only. The monks don't get along or what? I think it should just be one temple per town. We don't have that many Khmer to go all these temples.

There is not 3 temples in Modesto. There is one small one in Modesto and that is why they constructed a new bigger one to accommondate everyone.
