THE government should reduce the pay gap between members of parliament and teachers if it wishes to improve the quality of education in the Kingdom, said Rong Chhun, president of the Cambodian Independent Teachers Association (CITA), on Sunday.

"The salary gap is a serious abuse of human rights," Rong Chhun said at a news conference after the World Teachers Day celebration in Phnom Penh. "It would be reasonable [for the government] to increase teacher salaries to 1 million riels (US$245) per month if MPs earn a salary of nine million riels per month."

Cambodia currently employs about 100,000 teachers nationwide, earning approximately $45 per month, according to a report compiled by CITA.

But Cheam Yeap, chairman of the National Assembly's Commission on Economy, Finance, Banking and Audits, said it is not reasonable for the union to expect that teacher salaries be comparable to that of MPs.

"I wish Rong Chhun was an elected MP so he could understand our duties and why there is a salary gap," Cheam Yeap said, adding that MPs only receive around $242 per month.

But Sam Rainsy Party lawmaker Yim Sovann welcomed the teachers' demand for higher wages, saying the government promised to increase their salaries by 20 percent both in 2008 and 2009.

You see what I mean about the stupid teachers? Now they are threating the government by hijacking our kids. If we can't come up with the moneys, all of our kids will not be educated by them to the best of their ability. They will hold back until their demand are met.

I say fuck these corrupted SRP supporters (Teachers).

i think it would only be fair for the teachers in cambodia to receive this salary amount. after all teachers work hard to pass on their education and knowledge to their students, and they are invaluable, to say the least. plus, it would be a huge perks and incentives for them. i think teachers in cambodia deserve this salary increase, especially given the economic success in cambodia. god bless cambodia.

ps: low salary can cause teachers to go private, then people would complain about high tuition fees at private schools all over cambodia. i wonder why?

The reason teacher’s salary paid not enough because
the government are not recognize educations are important
to the country.

Government official in Cambodia majority are not well educated,
most of them are not even completed grade school. So the
education are not the solution for Cambodians to find the
Good job.

Money can buy any high rank positions from government employees
to civil employees.

MPs make 9M riels? Wow that's over $2000. I think the Viet is controlling the teachers' salary, teacgers make less so that they don't teach the khmer kids, the kids are dumb then, and Viet easy to control Khmer.

More precisely 2250$/month.
That's a lot of money for an asshole that doesn't contribute to the society.

Fire those MPs and with the money saved increase the salary of the teacher.

Also fire all incompetent teachers.

There is your solution a kwack.

No way, to give corrupted people raise is to encourage them to take corruption to the next level. Our pupils have suffered enough.

If Rong Chhun come to CPP from SRP, I hope he don't bring the SRP corruption tactic along. CPP is the cleanest party and we want to keep it that way.

I think the CPP should kicked Rong Chhun out before his stupid teachers give them a bad name. Tell him to clean up his laundry first, then he can join.

Some people is so rude with MPs.
Of course maybe, the MPs of CPP
does nothing.
Everything come from Hun Sen.
I have seen the member of Funcinpec
and SRP are so active.
They go oftenly to the communes.

So to the people who complainted about
the 2000 dollars a month. Just go to
the communes 5 times a month.
Guess how much it's could cost?
And usually, I see some of them go
to the communes more than 10 times
a month. With that amount of moneys,
you guys really think that MPs are suckers.
Forget about the CPP, they controlled all.
From the bottom to the top.
Others parties have to work hard
to stay in touch with cambodians.
The only way that SRP win a lots of seats.
Because SRP is against Hun Sen.
Right now, it's doesn't seem to be.

Of course, the salaries of the teachers
should be increased.

We should complain this government.
Hun Sen had said that the economy
has growth at a tremendous speed.
So how come, the teachers is only
paid 50 dollars a month.
In the communes, the teachers are
not paided 50. LESS than that.
The problem is the government.

No surprise, the fucking corrupted teachers is trying to scam the taxpayers again. Let's face fact: If the teacher is a Dumbo, it make no difference if you double, triple, or quadruple their salary. There is no correlation between quality and salary here.

Shut the fuck up, Ah Fake-Teachers, and stop listen to Ah Pleu-Oversea who live in a roach infested government housing and got their fake degree from online.
