FM plays down landmine case on Cambodian Border

The anti-personal mine that injured two Thai rangers on the border with Cambodia yesterday was left over long ago, and was not intended to prevent Thai armed forces from crossing the border, Foreign Minister Sompong Amornwiwat said yesterday.

Military on the ground said earlier the mine had been planted recently as the area, which had been full of land mines, had already been cleared.

Sompong tried to play down the tense situation before his visit with Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat on October 13, following the border skirmish in Phu Ma Khua, the same place where the rangers stepped over the mine.

The area is an overlapping territory claimed by both sides, situated about one kilometre west of Preah Vihear Temple. The temple is still the core conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.

The border skirmish on Friday injured two Thai para-military rangers and three Cambodia soldiers, which was followed by an exchange of diplomatic protests by both sides on Saturday. Sompong said he would seek to settle the border dispute when he meets his Cambodian counterpart in Phnom Penh.

The two countries need the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission on Demarcation for Land Boundary (JBC) to draw a clear boundary of 798 kilometres.

The JBC is headed by deputy foreign ministers on both sides. But as Sompong does not have a deputy, he will need to appoint any of his advisers or aides to head the JBC.

"I will appoint a person who is keen on legal and diplomatic affairs to head the Thai JBC," he said.

The JBC also needs a mandate from Parliament before beginning negotiations on the territory issue in accordance with the Constitution, Sompong said. The mandate framework has already been submitted to Parliament but the minister has not been able to make the case as the government has yet announced its policy to Parliament, he said.

The government will announce its policy to Parliament today and tomorrow. Sompong begins his first bilateral visit to Laos on October 10 before heading to Burma and Cambodia.

Maybe we shoule plant more mines just for this problem with Thai. I know it's not a good thing, but it's to prevent Thai from entering where they aren't suppose to be entering.

The Thai need to eat some more chili for them to accept the truth!

That could be the solution to Cambodian border problem by planting more landmines on Cambodian territories to prevent the Thai from entering Cambodia illegally!

Yes, it is a good idea to plant more mines in our soil to prevent a siams to invade. They stepped in our soil, and when stepped in mine field, accused us planting mines. A greedy siameses back off from khmer soil!

This story of mines which explode show that the thais soldiers returned to take revenge for his friends injured on Friday.
As the luck is of the Khmer side, these thais soldiers walked on mines.

All this show us that thais does not try to resolve this of border's problem peacefully.

The mines were just plant as early as one hour ago to prevent your THAI motherfuckers from crossing the border into Cambodia. You got that you THAI motherfucker , and we are going to install more booby trapS ,we learn from ah yuon VIETCONG , just to cause more misery for your dumb ass if you dumb ass did not refrain from invading our soil.Hey ! appeasement will not work ,only mines and booby traps will.

In their mind is to get Preah Vihear, Tamoan and Ta Krabei and may be more of Khmer soil: Koh Kong and Khmer oil... Be cautious with their shaking hand through developpement in Koh Kong and our oil in the sea.
Be careful now, a thais plan to grab Prolean Intry and Pram Makara permanently and will never withdraw. See how greedy they are. Don't let them take the two bases for cutting our vessles to the temple. I don't think the diplomatic talk is going to solve the conflict if a Thais have Mahecheta chhlean mean penh mouk yang nih.
khmer blood

khmer military will recieve about 30 brand new MIGS from france very shortly .let the thais think that we don't have the balls to play with their F16, which is out dated. We're gonna show them what 2008 MIGS can do to them in the near future

Anonymous said...

Kengi,

MIGs are not made in France, they are made in Russia...France does have fighter jet, but it is Mirage not MIGs...But surely according to Military source claimed by Phnom Penh post, Cambodia is going to get modern fighter jets at the end of october 2008..

I believe it might be the refurbished Mig-29, the Russian made and comparable to US F16. Currently, we have only one fighter jet is available is L-39 made in Czech and renovate in Israel..The other 50 Mig-21s are all grounded since 1993...Anyway, if these Mig-21s can operate, they can still resist to the Thais F16, coz I know that the quality of Thai's F16 is only 60%, because it is the Free gift from the US through Clinton administration..

We just need rockets or misiles that can take jets down. Like the Burmese took down Thai planes.

These are mines planted by KR on Cambodia soil to prevent the incursion as well as the escape of Cambodian to Thai. It proves that those so called grey area are Khmer territory. It only becomes the grey under HS regime.

Everytime those murdered Thai soldiers get blown by landmines, or any form, ease Khmer suffering. The more Thai get hurt Khmer suffering will diminish.

Down with the Thai!

of course not! thailand gov't and military are on a separate rule of their own; i don't think they really have a gov't or a military as one like one would think for a country. their military and their gov't are on two separate agenda opposite of each other. they are really weak right now!!!!

I am very happy to hear that we will get more jets fighter or others army weapons, but will it's true? How can we afford to buy these? Our army does not have enough foods!!!

But we can if our government or all this general stop corrupt. For me we should build up our army long time ago not now. But its not too late if Hun Sen would like to build up stronger Khmer force, coz our army got already too much skill, too easy to make our defend force getting stronger at any time.

Wish its true that we will get more jets fighter and all kind of weapons, just to protect our territory only, not for war with any one, except Siam, and youn.

Stronger Khmer
