Foreign ministry: Military may defend from Cambodian fire at border temple
BANGKOK, Oct 27 (TNA) -- Thai soldiers posted at the disputed Thai-Cambodian border had every right to defend themselves when fired on by Cambodian troops in the vicinity ofthe 11th century Preah Vihear temple earlier this month, said Virasakdi Futrakul, permanent secretary for the Thai Foreign Ministry, on Monday.
Charging that Cambodia had moved several hundreds soldiers fully-equipped for combat and supporting artillery to the vicinity of the temple, Mr. Virasaki said the foreigh ministry investigate a complaint lodged by Cambodia with the UN accusing Thai troops of firing on and damaging the temple during an exchange of gunfire between troops of the two neighbouring countries on October 15.
One Thai paramilitary ranger and three Cambodian soldiers died in the clashes on that day.
On Sunday, Phay Siphan, spokesman for Cambodia's Council of Ministers, told French news agency AFP in Phnom Penh that a staircase and a sculpture of the mythical Naga creature were damaged by rocket fired by Thai troops at the temple ruins during the mid-October shoot out.
Cambodia filed its complaint with UNESCO within days of the incident.
But Mr. Virasakdi countered the charges, saying that Cambodian troops fired rocket propelled grenades from the temple at Thai soldiers and if that was the case then the Thai soldiers had full rights to defend themselves.
He said his ministry is checking how many Cambodian soldiers are stationing around Preah Vihear temple and whether it violates the World Heritage convention.
UNESCO has to verify it and it is unnecessary for Thailand to lodge a complaint on this issue to the organisation, Mr. Veerasak said.
Touching on an initial agreement reached by senior Thai and Cambodian soldiers last week which will be presented to the Thai Parliament Tuesday for its approval so that border negotiations could resume with Phnom Penh, Mr. Virasakdi said Parliament will only consider issues that both sides would negotiate.
If approved, negotiations could be held around mid-November, he added.

why don't we give Thailand 2 more months, at the latest January to sort out their deal, and let them know we will bring them to court not anything other than invading a sovereign territory of a smaller neighbor. There is no need to complain U.N on solving an already decided border, we go to them this time to ask that they condemn violation of our independence and force them out of Khmer land.
Why is that too hard to do?
Simple answer. Why the temple Preah Vihea damage? Because fighting between Khmer and Siam. Why they both fight? Because Siam troop invade Khmer's land. Why Siam invade because PM's Khmer allow and not taking those problem to the International hand. Why not? Their benefit. Who suppose to pay for the cause? Khmer PM and Siam.
right now international are united nation. If cambodian government can not protect their land and allow neibers steal their land every days, it means dump-head CPP = thai-viet shits
everything the thai are accusing cambodia is so laughable. i can't wait for cambodia to take them to the world court again and see how the judges are laughing at thailand for their silly accusation on cambodia. for once, thailand had something to hide from the world, so they want to deal with cambodia bilaterally as they claim, however, they are afraid that when cambodia get the world like the icj, the UN council, etc. involve that the world will see their bad intention or worst their violation against cambodia. i have the feeling thailand this time might be running out of clever tactics against cambodia. give it up already, thieves!!! it's not yours and never will be!!! god bless cambodia. cambodia is more than about thailand or mr. hun sen, etc... for that matter!
Dear All,
THIS IS THE THAIS'TRUE NATURE. THIS IS WHAT WE CALL "THIEF-CRYING-STOP-THIEF" TRICKS THAT THE THAIS HAVE USED AND ARE USING AGAIN TO SWALLOW THE KHMER KINGDOM.
THE THAIS TALKS SOFTLY AND NICELY, BUT HARM AND KILL OTHERS CRUELLY.
THE THAIS HAVE THE HABIT OF LIP-SERVICING, AND TELLING LIE. HYPOCRITICAL NATURE.
KHMER MUST BE MINDFULL ALL THE TIME IN DEALING WITH THE THAIS.
THESE DAYS, THAIS START USING THEIR MEDIA/NEWPAPERS/TV TO SHIFT THE BLAME OF BORDER FIGHTINGS ON CAMBODIA, TRYING TO DIVERT THE WORLD ATTENTION BY SLANDERING THE REALITY.
THE THAIs ARE TRYING TO TURN "BLACK TO WHITE" REGARDING THEIR ACTS OF AGGRESSION, INVASION AND INTRUSION OF KHMER TERRITORY.
THE MOUTHPIECE OF CAMBODIAN GOVERNMENT MUST TAKE COUNTER-ATTACKS TO THE THAI MEDIA AND HIT TO THE POINTS.
IT IS TIME THE CAMBODIAN GOVERNMNET USE THE MEDIA AS CHEAPER MEANS TO ATTACK THE THAIS.
KHMER MEDIA MUST MAKE THE BEST USE OF THAI TRICKS.
M. Tan
