Thailand said it wants to resolve a border dispute with Cambodia through talks, rebuffing a deadline from its Southeast Asian neighbor to immediately remove troops from the area.
"Both sides should move to avoid confrontation,'' Thai Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat said. A Thai-Cambodian committee set up to discuss the dispute should decide "the distance and where'' the soldiers will move. ``If we withdraw the troops now, we don't know exactly at which point to go.''
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday demanded that Thailand immediately withdraw troops from the area or face "large-scale armed conflict.''
