Police shoo away Licadho’s investigators and curious onlookers after a house was half sunk into the lake.

On Thursday 27 November, cops prevented Cambodian and foreign investigators from Licadho to meet with a family living on Boeung Kak Lake which is currently being filled in for a major real estate development project.

In the evening of Wednesday to Thursday, Sun Ratanak’s home on stilt sunk into the lake water. Chea Nara (a Licadho investigator) said that he and his colleagues were prevented from meeting the family of the victims. “We can only get into the location if we ask the authorization from the Phnom Penh governor,” Chea Nara reported.

The filling of the lake gave rise to a confrontation between the developers – the Shukaku Inc. Company and the CPP tycoon-senator Lao Meng Khin – and the residents. The latter refused to accept the compensation given to them in exchange for them to leave the location, claiming that they are too little.

that's so unsightly for the beautiful city of phnom penh, a shanty ramshackle! must go, i hope! how would you like it if people build this ramshackle right in the middle of paris, london, new york, etc...? same dislike in cambodia, here. god bless.

If i were in charge ,this natural wonder will be transformed into a beautiful marina. Remember having lake in the middle of the city is rare. You can decorate the lake with beautiful tree, garden ,roads, dock for sailing boats etc... and preserve the lake for the people to enjoy for generations to come. You can do if you have the dream.By the way this abode is a perfect vacation home for now.

did you see their masterplan, they didn't want to destroy the lake, they just want to develop it in to a beautiful, modern environment, but some opposition people, god know how they feel jealous, wanted to use their political shenanigan to arouse people to go against it! they must be blinded by the good development that businesses had plan for the growing, beautiful city of phnom penh. god bless cambodia.

totally agree with 3:13am. Cambodian should try to reserve these natural beauty before they're all gone.

And 3:21am is right about the part that they will not fill up the lake completely. According to the plan, they will fill up about 90% of the lake.
