Border Standoff Hurting Trade: Economist

Chap Sotharith, president of the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace

The lingering military standoff on the Thai border is likely hurting trade between the two countries, an independent economist said Monday.

Conflict between two neighboring countries does not bring any benefits,” said Chap Sotharith, an economist and president of the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace. “Firstly, there’s a loss of lives, and secondly, there’s the economic loss when trade decreases.”

Trade between the two neighbors had steadily increased over the past few years, but the border dispute, which was inflamed by the July entry of Preah Vihear temple onto a Unesco World Heritage list, has hurt that progress, he said, as a guest on “Hello VOA.”

Much of the trade along the border is unreported, so it was difficult to estimate the amount of trade damage the standoff is causing, but traders on the border were being the most severely affected, he said.

Cambodia runs a large trade deficit with Thailand. In 2007, Cambodia exported about $40 million in goods to Thailand, but imported about $1.4 billion in goods.

Cambodia runs a large trade deficit with Thailand. In 2007, Cambodia exported about $40 million in goods to Thailand, but imported about $1.4 billion in goods.

What is wrong with this statement? Who is supposedly held responsible for this lack of balance when it comes to import and export businesses between the two countries. This clearly is indicating that Cambodia lacks of technological and as well as agricultural advancement in producing products that could be exported to the outside markets, thus balancing the market deficit within Cambodia.

I think Cambodia should focus on education where it could help strengtening the prosperity of Cambodia as a whole. By teaching Cambodians to seek what is priority and delegate those responsibilties to those who are accountable for this reproduction of services and productivities.

Cambodia can be a productive society if the law in Cambodia is ratified and reamend. Law is the structures and the foundation to every nation success. If any country do not have the right law to guide them, then it is like driving a car with a blind eyes and hoping that the car is being driven can drive itself and turn every corner as it sees necessary; and this could lead to tragedy. In my opinion I think Cambodia can do alot better than this. Its people are mostly intellectuals and have gone through some horrible period within this century, this could teach many Cambodians to be a better citizens and prepare to take challenges to its government and hold them accountable for their erred judgement.

I thank you.

Did Poch Reasey do a proper research before introducing him as an independent economist? I appreciate his analysis of our economic situation but, as we all know from our experience, there is also a political divide for the "experts" in Cambodia. I think he is also an economic advisor to a certain hot-shot in the government, in which case we can forget about being independent.

There is a reason, while some "experts" are rumbling about what we already know or expect to happen in a logical sequence, why certain national institutes do not publish the CPI for 2008 yet, much like the fact that they delayed the official inflation rate before the National Election. Because it would look pretty bad for the ruling CPP.

Why you guys still don't remember about pol pot regime, they never need anyone to helping. So what happening on their regime?

Actually, the CPI after election was already released if i am not wrong. People said it was delayed due to technical miscalculation. Yet as someone mentioned, it would be a reason of political attack.
