After the departure of Prince Norodom Ranariddh as the party leader, a number of NRP officials seems to be discouraged in their political future and they have started to leave the party also, thus reducing further the number of high ranking party officials.
Suth Dyna, the NRP secretary-general and party spokesman, told Kampuchea Thmei in the afternoon of 04 November 2008, that Heng Chantha, the party general-inspector and former Banteay Meanchey province governor, and Thav Kim Hor, the NRP deputy secretary-general, left the party recently. He added that he was not sure which party the pair will join next, but that he knows that a number of former NRP party members left to join the CPP, such as Keo Thea – a member of the party leadership and a party councilor, as well as an editor of the Voice of Khmer Youth (Samleng Yuveakchun Khmer) newspaper – who left to join the ruling CPP party.
Suth Dyna indicated that the departure of these two latter party officials does not affect the party because this is not an election period, but if it were to be one, then the party could be somewhat affected. Therefore, their departure does not create any serious problem. Furthermore, the NRP has an open door policy where party activists can leave to join other parties freely.
Regarding the party congress to nominate Chhim Siek Leng as the official NRP president, Suth Dyna indicated that the end of 2008 may not be a good time because Cambodia is facing political problems, such as the Thai aggression and the NRP had made deals with Hun Sen so that Prince Ranariddh can be pardoned. Therefore, the NRP will not be involved in politics or organize a party congress because it is not necessary at this time when the country is so busy preparing for major national festivals. The party congress may be delayed to next year, when a more opportune occasion can be found.
Keat Sokun, HRP vice-president, said that the defection from one party to another is the freedom rights of each party activist, however, based on his observation, Cambodian politicians do not stand on ideals, they mainly look after their personal interest instead: when they see another place that may provide better interest for them, they would run toward that place.
Keat Sokun added that this is not a good thing for the Cambodian people, as Mahatma Gandhi said: “Politicians or if you are involved in politics, if you have no goal, it’s like bringing hell to the Cambodian people instead.”
Keat Sokun called on these politicians to uphold their ideals so that they can have clear political goals, and they can bring happiness to the people, they should not be involved in politics just for their personal gains.
Prince Norodom Ranariddh decided to resign from the NRP presidency after he made a deal with Hun Sen so that he can escape the charges handed down to him by the court and he can return back home at the end of September 2008. Ranariddh’s decision to resign brought discouragement among high-ranking party officials, especially regarding their political future, some of them immediately took off to join the CPP, like Keo Thea did.
