Asean secretary-general Surin Pitsuwan has expressed concern and suggested Thailand decide if it should postpone the Asean summit next month until the political situation is settled.
In an exclusive interview with the Bangkok Post, Mr Surin yesterday urged the government to make a quick decision on whether to postpone the summit scheduled for Chiang Mai from Dec 15-18.
The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), which seized the Government House compound in late August, has stepped up the pressure on the government by occupying Suvarnabhumi airport and Don Mueang domestic airport, virtually paralysing air traffic in the kingdom.
Mr Surin said the government must make a decision as he expressed his concerns to senior Thai officials. He declined to disclose the details.
"As Asean secretary-general, I am ready to help coordinate with other Asean members over Thailand's decision. The situation looks critical as 35 documents signed and adopted by Asean leaders and ministers have not been passed by the Thai parliament," he said.
"I don't know if there will be anything happening [before the parliamentary special session on Dec 8-9 to consider the agreements that Thailand is supposed to sign at the summit]. It's quite hectic and time is running short. I feel concerned about it," Mr Surin said.
He said world leaders were observing Thailand's situation with grave concern.
Thailand should quickly decide on the Asean meeting so that a new schedule could be arranged if it is postponed.
Vitavas Sriwihok, Thailand's Asean director-general, said a decision on the meeting would have to be made by Tuesday.
