Former CPP critic Serey Kosal defects, voices praise for PM Hun Sen
SEREY Kosal, a former Funcinpec resistance commander and long-time critic of Prime Minister Hun Sen, announced on Tuesday his defection to the ruling Cambodian People's Party following a year of political setbacks.
"I see that Funcinpec could not unite itself since the party was seriously divided and losing popularity following the [national election] on July 27," he told the Post Tuesday.
"After 20 years of opposing the Vietnamese-backed CPP, I now recognise the achievement of the national and international policies of the CPP."
During the factional fighting of 1997, Serey Kosal commanded troops loyal to Funcinpec and describes himself as having been a "hardline" opponent of Hun Sen and the CPP since the early 1980s.
But he now lauds the CPP's approach to national unity, pursued through the integration of politicians of all political persuations without discrimination towards former opponents.
"Hun Sen was angrier with me than he was with the other members in Funcinpec, and now he still welcomes me," he said.
CPP spokesman Khieu Kanharith confirmed Tuesday that Serey Kosal had joined the CPP and would be given the post of senior minister.
"The CPP is a party with good discipline, so people want to work with it," he said.
Ok Socheath, adviser to Funcinpec President Keo Puthrasmey, was concerned the steady defection of senior party members to the CPP would hurt the party at the 2013 national elections, but said the party still had the ability to rebuild.

11:51pm, nhiek bunchhay, already defected a long, long time ago. he has been hun sen's slave for at least 2-3 years. you see, only him get the deputy pm job from funcinpec. he has defected but acted like a double agent, like staying with funcinpec but work for hun sen. only keo put rasmy, his wife arunrasmy, sisowath sirirath did not defect because hun sen did not like them.
Cambodian political system only allows one party to rule, historically, from time immemorial. Think about it, other parties appeared and disappeared or coerced/co-opted into the ruling party, sooner or later. That has been how Khmer politicians manage to survive, and being called smart by observers.
From Sihanouk to Lon Nol,to Pol Pot, and to Hun Sen; there has been no change, only absolute ruling. So the idea of Western democracy is only a facade and serve to delude Khmer people, and in fact, I should say Khmer people want to be ruled like sheep, and they accept their fate with bliss. And I am happy for them too.

Congratulation to CPP and Hanoi Master. Your political tatics are superb in term of disband the opposition parties and strain their members to joint and kowtow to CPP for survival. It is not that the CPP won legitimatelu so far, butr because they force their way in through brute force. No other party can rule cambodia without CPP tear the country to pieces. CPP or no Cambodia. Very much Sihanouk style.
No surprise. It is just perhaps a "home coming", after the mission to destroy the opponent is successful. You must be aware that there are a lot of CPP's secret agents in other parties. CPP is best at espionage and implementation of DIFID strategy.
CPP has just been celebrating "a family reunion" with family members returning from SRP, FUNCINPEC, HRP, etc.
I agree that SRP is the "best" among all Cambodian parties. But I disagree that it is that "good". SRP is, as a comparison, like someone who know how to calculate 1+1 while all the others are completely illiterate.

But in politics, you must learn to say 1+1 is 100, or you would be out forever. SRP without Raiinsy would be finished or witrh Rainsy/Eng Chhay Ien/Yim Sovann, it will never go anywhere. But it will always get some seats to make a living for its few followers, that is about it.
When you elections, you will always see illierate people winning all the times, the educated , intelelctuals tend to stay away and make comments from the distance. it happens in many countries. Many politicians who defect to CPP usually argued they would like to serve the nation with the prime minister. But it's very clear that all they want is power to make money, legally or illegally.
By then , too many will rush to receive their montrey seats, cambodia would be run to the ground. It is already happening now, in fact.
After all, who cares, I don't live there. I only say it be cauze i still have some Khmer sentiment and memory. If those khmer people in the country don't give a damn, who would. Not me, of course. I am living in confort, I am earining decent income with dignity already.
