PHNOM PENH, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's tourism sector is set to form a task force next week to address the Thai political crisis that has caused foreign arrivals in the Kingdom to plummet, national media reported Wednesday.
The task force will consist of 10 institutions, including airlines, travel agencies, hotels, restaurants and government departments, and will develop a national strategy to attract foreign tourists, Ho Vandy, president of the Cambodian Association of Travel Agents, was quoted by the Phnom Penh Post as saying.
He said the Ministry of Tourism approved the task force on Tuesday and it would convene next week.
Both of Bangkok's major airports have been occupied by anti-government protesters since last week, leaving hundreds of thousands of travelers stranded.
The crisis has hit Cambodia's tourism industry hard, as about a third of the Kingdom's visitors arrive via Thailand.
Ho Vandy said the task force hopes to shift Cambodia's tourist arrivals away from Thailand.
"Although most tourists in Cambodia come through Thailand, our tourism sector has survived because we have other gateways such as Malaysia, Singapore, China, South Korea and Vietnam," he added.

Cambodia must have its own flag carrier with the right kind of airport which would accommodate all kind of airplanes. Roads should all be built to connect all dots with its neighbors. We must diversify...
yes, when will cambodia get the world class airport like say in thailand, singapore, etc... our airport is so puny (small) in comparison to airports say in thailand, singapore, and others worldly destination. c'mon, cambodia, please think big! we need to really expand our international airport to at least 3500 meters or longer in the length of the runways in both siem reap/angkor airport and phnom penh international airport, and even in sihanoukville international airport so we can handle not only long haul flights from everywhere in the world, but also handling large airliners like the boeing 747, the new double deck super jet airliners, etc... when are we going to realize the importance of these kinds of development so cambodia can become modernized like the rest of the developing countries out there. when are we doing to do it? can't wait forever as people can grow old and be dead by the time we develop these important infrastructure for our beautiful country of cambodia. may god bless cambodia.
and yes, when are we going to have a flag carrier like other countries in the world? cambodia must push for aid to get these kinds of important infrastructure going because not only it will be good for the country, it will also create more job for the young people and help the cambodia economy as well when people get paid and have money to live on for their families.
Yes... the airports are the key to the Kingdoms prosperity. every time a visitor leaves Cambodia he or she is charged a $25.00 airport tax... i only hope that the tax is being put toward the development of the airport. i would rather fly straight from my small town in the USA (which can support a 747) to the capitol city of Cambodia when i go to visit my family... just imagine what it would do for the Cambodian economy if all the shipments of goods and tourists alike did not need to stop in Bankok or Hong Kong.
