Cambodian minister wants to shut down US website for showing too realistic Apsara image: Ing Kanthaphavy’s censorship stupidity?

Ing Kanthaphavy, CPP minister of Woman Affairs and former F'pec defector
One of the Apsara images from reahu.net that received the ire of Ing Kanthaphavy

Website displaying half nude Apsaras to be shut down

The ministry of Woman Affairs is planning to shut down a website displaying images of half-nude Apsaras (KI-Media Note: The “reahu.net” website is based in the US where Cambodian gov’t has no jurisdiction whatsoever) created by a Cambodian-American artist. Ms. Ing Kanthaphaby, the minister of Woman Affairs, raised the issue of the negative impact brought by this website on Khmer culture. She told The Phnom Penh Post that “Right now, we are preparing to shut down this website.” Van Sophat, Licadho liaison deputy director, said that this website should be shut down because it attracts too much attention from Cambodian youths. He said that these images are actually modeled after Apsara sculptures, but they are too realistic just like actual human flesh. Chuch Phoeung, the secretary of state of the ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, indicated that his ministry has no reaction to these images: “This is the freedom of the artist who drew the human body. If you visit European museums, you will see these types of drawings in the majority of museums.”

I think this idiot minister should learn how to distinguish the value artwork and khmer culture.
Every nationality must have their freedom to express their ability to create art freely. If the minister wants to protect khmer culture, this minister should concentrate on fighting with corruption and robberies. These culture of corruptions and robberies are not khmer culture and should be suppressed at all cost to preserve khmer culture of honesty and high integrity. She shouldn't confuse with the value of art. I fully support the website and the works done by the artist. Areak Prey

C is minister of woman affairs not minister of fighting corruption nor minister of interior. So she does not know how to combat corruption nor to catch the robbers. Her job is to promote gender equity and to concern what is concerned. Anyway she is still one of hundred defectors. She is worthless compared to even the modern Apsaras.

oh no do not shut down reahu web site if Ms ing kanthaphavy can not sit nake like the picture drawn by the artist

Khmer should be more concerned about how stupid we are in relation to mistreatment of their fellow Khmer, stealing national treasures, sale state land and so on. Not about stopping talent artist work that can do nothing but promote Khmer identity. Apsara is one off Khmer identity, if this is shameful than we are shamefully of being Khmer period.

Is Phalla Uok interested in this project? We'd like to recruit her, but first she needs to work out to tight her ass and the rest of her body. We're certain that her husband wouldn't mind.

The picture of the near-nake girl represents the bas relief on the wall behind her. If Khmer feel ashamed with the picture, Khmer should tear down all depicted bas reliefs that have dancing performed girls exposed breasts on the wall of Angkor Temple.

This art is reflecting truly form of Khmer royal dancing troops during the period.

That is a beautiful picture of Apsara ever! Just don't go over board Reahu.net. You're fine. That is just any woman wearing a bikini.

Anonymous said...

This artists from REAHU.NET have produced a very great nice masterpiece.I love it.
The minister may be jealous because she don't have that shape of body.
P.S.: I could help shape her body if she wanted to settle the matter
positively.

Anonymous said...

Imagine if this photo was taken from a young Princess Bopha Devi or someone very famous. Check out the picture of Marilyn Monero stood next to a bike wearing only a biniki and the artist took her picture from her side. Monero stood in a position almost like this unknown lady artist and it was sold for $150,000 for just a few hours ago and if anyone or a young man wants to spend his/her money buying this picture to hang in his/her bedroom. They should be able to do so and have fun with it! and that is just one way to open market.

This picture looks just like an innocent angel. Very charming and gracious. If she is to turn around and looking at you with a seductive face that may say a different story. Ms. Kantha Phavi needs to check out Victoria's Secret Magazine that sell millions of langeries to women world wide and not just in United States. This picture may reveal a litlle too baring of the top part of the body, but it wasn't bad. That is how Cambodian women dresses then and just don't go over board or it will turn to porn.

she looks like she the original apsara performer seen on the wall of angkor temples. in the days of the great khmer civilization, apsara are topless, evidenced by the numerous eternal stone carvings commonly found on all of angkor's temple monuments. why it's such a big deal now? i guess, she may deems it as inappropriate for small children and family to see. i'm sure in the USA, too, there are law that discourage lewd conduct or lewd act in public places due to children and family and those religous people who get offended, so, not unique to cambodia. maybe, it is an the right thing to do by the minister of women's affair. so, don't hate her because she is trying to protect children and family value, etc... god bless cambodia.

I found nothing vulgar to be foul in this picture. It is just so charming, sensual, artistic and very Khmer. Khmer women are simple naturally beautiful and they must not afraid to show it.

Former khmer culture and society is like the one Europe, devoting, opening with its codes of ethic and conduct unlike the one of chin yuon kantop ass that repressed its women. The yuon women need to dress from head to feet but apparently this cant help or stop the yuon culture and society from renaming being the worse culture or society of vulgar and over does of prostitution in all form and contaminated to other society dominated by it.

The yuons kantop who rule over Cambodian society should know that people can dress a bit light but can respect one another without jumping on one other like dogs. We can be sensual, sexy and class without going into vulgarity like the one of kantop ass.

The yuons and cpp people should know that there are thousands and thousands of women and child in Cambodia are being abused, maltreated, looking down and sold like an vulgar object, private from all rights and basic dignity, forced to prostitute just for a piece of meal but the yuons or cpp regime are much carless about the life of these people so why these people are so foul and make too much noise with this simple artistic picture? Lately I saw a website in which the white skin sex tourists abused on street women in Cambodia (http://www.4womenoftheworld.com/tours/index.php?location=9&no_session=1&path=&nats=MjkwOjM6MQ,15,0,0,0&tour=cambodia ). Paid them few $$, prix of misery, undressed them, make these women dance and do anything as these people please just to look make them little to better mock on them and their misery, film their nude and ridicules bodies and published them in the porno website. Don’t the yuons/cpp think that these things and all the ugly things in Cambodia regard human rights and dignity are much important and much grave than the pictures published in reahu website?

As long as it's not PORN representing Apsara.
It's should be fine...
At Angkor, especially at Bayon Temple,
I have witnessed some braless apsaras have
a bright Boobs.. even it was dated 1000 years already.
Do you know why it's so bright?
Because tourists like boobs, they touched so many
time the apsara's boobs. So those boobs become so bright...

So if we ban the website, we have to destroy all the apsara's sculpture.
DO WE HAVE TO DO THAT???

I think these apsara pics are less harmful than to have
beer and cigarette representing Angkor...

Anyway, This Ung Kunthaphavy, not Ms Ing Kanthaphaby,
and her families were always betrayer since 1993 to Funcinpec.
Her relatives and her are always working for CPP.

The yuons can always control Cambodia, kill Khmer but the yuons cant kill, take out or repress our thinking….

Let Koun Khmer think and let them free pouch ah kantop

I am also a khmer artist but my works can not compare to reahu.net. I love all kinds of khmer arts. I love this website. reahu.net please keep up the good works.

Anonymous said...

I think the priority for the Ministry of Woman affair is not these paintings... I think it is creative arts. We must not limit our imagination to modern arts. We must not trapped in old culture. We can evolve around the old culture of arts to make it even better. I don't see there is nothing wrong with it.

Anonymous said...

yes, agreed that the original khmer culture of the angkor civilization were pure and shameless to go bare all as evidenced by the many topless apsara carvings found at angkor temples. plus, i'm not offended by this picture as it shows her real, natural khmer beauty. that's why there are law the prevent children from accessing this kind of site that intended for adult audience only; and yes, some people would argue for their rights to have such site as their freedom of entrepreneurship or freedom of sexual expression. i guess, the key different is the appropriate time and place for this kind of site because taking into consideration of those who can get offended from it. so, it goes both ways, i guess. my point is khmer should emphasize too much on this kind of sexual expression; and everyone seems to miss the point. i think appropriateness is the key issue here, not whether is is using khmer culture for sexual favor or something. sometime people in authority can overstep their authoritativeness, especially, if they misunderstood or something. so, keep communicating and debating will help clear some of the misunderstand here. god bless.

Anonymous said...

"shut down the site" how? perhaps it can be blocked in Cambodia but that's all. Certainly, these depictions are historically accurate so what's the problem?

no, i don't agee on personal argument that pick on a person's look, especially. not necessarily, 2:27am, i think the the minister is just trying to do her job, but she probably did not take into consideration both sides of the views, thus became one-sided in her view of protecting the children, khmer family value, etc... i think as a leader, one has to look at all issue that impact everyone , not just the few, then strike a balance so not to infringe on anyone's rights. of course, it's a hard job, who says being a leader was easy? it takes a strong character to be a leader. got to be thick skin all the time considering it's a tough job. god bless her.

Damn it ! some Ach-kloung undersea could not get it ! They are lacking the fine art culture :

There is no such the thing can be called leadership in Cambodia. There is only yuon slaveship and these people just try to impose their culture and way of thinking to those under their domination. If these people care about Khmer image or want to defend Cambodian society, they should care about much worse things happened in Cambodian society like killing, corruption, poverty, women and child prostitution, human rights violation, abused in all form, the dignity of Khmer people but these people care only their own things and affairs. Hi everyone, I am a Khmer artist in USA. Yes, you may call this an art. But it is mixed media between "real photo" of woman (Khmer woman?) and painting of back ground. The artist also paints some parts of her body to make it look like a painting.

It is still the form of art to the artists.

Keep up the good work.

Anonymous said...

The arts are great but do not go overboard. If she decides to shut down the website, just create a new one! Good Luck!

THIS PHOTO HAS 3 PARTS:

1- THE FOREST IS PAINTED.
2- THE WALL OF APSARA IS REAL.
3- THE WOMAN IS REAL.

HE TOOK THE 3 PICTURES AT DIFFERENT PLACES AND TIMES. THEN HE USED A GRAPHIC PROGRAM LIKE PHOTOSHOP TO MIX THEM.

THE ARTIST IS SO SMART. IT IS THE REALISTIC AND UNREALISTIC ART.

GOOD JOB...I AM AN ARTIST TOO.

To my thought, the ministry of women affairs should focus on human trafficking and women exploitation than these new arts and creative ideas. Nothing worse than prostitutes roaming the whole area of Phnom Penh.

For India, Kamasutra was carved on the wall of a temple and western people think it is as valuable sexual theory for sex education.

In Cambodia, moral has gone wild not from depicting such arts but from low education and little law reinforcement. Sex crime increasingly occurs everywhere in the country but less efforts have been made to offenders. $100,000 riels sometimes is good enough in compensation and the criminals is just happy with this amount of money.

Answer these questions:
- What would be the real impacts on the youth from seeing those arts in reahu.net?
- What about pornography sites on the internet?

How can human trafficking and women exploitation be stopped if those so-called art painting are so appealing, charming, and attractive to have sex? You, idiot people have tonge and you just swing freely without any responsibilities as Khmers. If you are one of Khmers you also have the responsiblities to contributing to solving such issues (trafficking and exploitation) for our beloved and respectful Khmer women.

I understand that this is called art. But imagine if this kind of art modify the flag of Cambodia by putting an appealing naked girl on it and you call that it is an art, can it be so fair for us Khmer. You make chaos, corruption, robberies yourself in the society and you shout to stop these things, all of you are so useless and idiot and I am really ashame to be Khmer if Cambodia is full of your type idiot people.

Anyway, you artist should think of the side effect from what you are doing. Compare this with recent issue of border conflict with Thailand. The mistakes made by previous generation left behind the misunderstanding about the unclear border line. And now do you want to leave behind for the next next next generation that all women in Cambodia in this period are whores. Come on that will include your sisters, mothers, grand mothers as well.

Oh, I want to give a message to Mr Chuch Pheun. You idiot think carefully if you want to get voted, women represents more than half of Cambodian people and if you disgrace them you will lose the vote or maybe get thrown by rocks, I think.

From a man who also love this photo

There is rules and regulations governing this.

Thank you Reahu.net for bringing Apsara to life. Keep up the good work; nothing wrong with exposing the true identity of the Khmer cultures.

painting in details of one's asshole is also an art. the guy who compared Victoria Secret lingeries models to Apsaras is purely a shallowed-mind idiot!

all khmer women in Angkor era were not wearing shirt, period. Victoria Secret tries to make a buck associating tiny pieces cotton or polyester to boobs an imaginary female genitals - two very different contexts.

These types of paintings-original oil paintings can be purchased on the street that borders the Fine Arts University in Phnom Penh. It is art and very tastefully done. She needs to go to look at the Sistine chapel ceiling if she wants to see some real nudity in paintings. There are many real issues for her to focus on particularly violence to woman (and woman to men). Just read the police blotter ever week.

Anonymous said...

I don't understand 11:38AM. Do all those paintings really arouse your sex so much that you can not stop to rape a lady or a gay?

Is Cambodian flag an art or what? Now read my views on this.

_______________

My views on www.reahu.net

Recently reahu.net gets a big hit over the half naked Apsara. The Ministry of Women Affairs is likely to shutdown the website citing the result of a heavy impact on the Cambodian culture and the youths.

To my views:

• There is nothing worse than CTN Khmer movie by Mrs. Paon Phoung Bopha that goes deep into the heart of the Cambodian kids without any audience pre-warning. All is about love and sex!
• There is nothing worse than prostitutes roaming the capital and the whole country.
• There is nothing worse than a monk who raped a Western Tourist.
• There is nothing worse than begging to buy luxurious car
• There is nothing worse than illegal logging and seeing our forest and wildlife dwindling.
• There is nothing worse than seeing injustice to innocent people
• There is nothing worse than seeing those general cars with military plate roaming the street and abuse traffic laws.
• There is nothing worse than human trafficking and women exploitation and the disgrace of the morale.
• There is nothing worse than a father rapes his own daughter - is this the result of watching reahu.net?
• There is nothing worse than heaps and hills of garbage all over the country.
• There is nothing worse than dusty street
• There is nothing worse than low moral among the Cambodian people
• There is nothing worse than the bad public services such as the postal services in the country
• There is nothing worse than throwing a plastic bottle into the seas and the ugly beach from wastes.
• There is nothing worse than a small group of the Cambodian owned the whole land of Cambodia and left 13 millions without any land to live on and cultivate.
• There is nothing worse than trying to be perfectionist - only see other faults and not accepting one's own faults.
• There is nothing worse than seeing an extreme communist country turned into a faster developing country than Cambodia.
• There is nothing worse than the dwindle of the Cambodian wildlife
• There is nothing worse than seeing the state owned land being sold and the money is divides to the shareholders and not the national budget.
• There is nothing worse than paying income tax without any social security.
• There is nothing worse than seeing peasants being over fined by police on the street than town people who can easily escape the police trap
• There is nothing worse than seeing police crackdown on monk for peaceful demonstration.
• And so on...

The half naked Apsara is a message to tell the slow development of the country - both the culture and other aspects because of the undeveloped mindsets of our leaders. When they are visiting developed countries, do they bring something back or they just ignore everything?

The Khmer is born with creative art but if you talk about creative to our leaders, do they really understand what creative is about?

Do we utilize our culture fully?
Does the Khmer language develop?
Where is Khemarak Yeanakam now?
How about Putasasnak Bondith?
What about the Cambodian song now? Always about love Oun /Bong, isn't it?

For some reasons, we need to examine the works done by reahu.net and warn this site for some of their contents.

Reahu has done a great job. I love and appreciate his work. Keep it up. It's just the art. The beauty of Khmer Apsara is reflected in his works. Everyone, please be opened-mind. Good or bad is depended on you people think. During the Angkor Empire, the ladies are topless and it's normal. If you think the Topless Apsara is bad, then all Topless Apsara on the Angkor wall should be also removed or the Ankor Temple should be closed down because the Topless Apsara on the wall are too sexy.

Think it broadly...creatively...be open to the out-side world. Great job Reahu.

Why the hell are all of you insulting Dr. Ing Kantha Phavi?!?! You guys can't even spell her frigging name properly anyways!!!!!

I bet that most of the people writing and saying that Reahu made good work are frigging men! It's not all about porn. You can go get nude pictures elsewhere. AT LEAST try and protect your own culture! Don't use Angkor Wat, that's all. If women agree to be shown nude, then let them be. BUT NOT APSARA WOMEN... We're now in the 20th Century. They are art and part of history, and that should not be changed attract sexual attention!

And to "HEARN"... Dr. Ing Kantha Phavi's husband DOES NOT GO VISIT WHORE HOUSES! I bet it's you, and you're just too embarrased to say it, so you say it's him!

Expressing your opinion is ONE THING, but that doesn't mean you can say things that you can't support as true!!! Be realistic people, politicians are also humans. And not all politicians are "shallow" and "selfish". Why don't you guys try to be in their shoes and read these comments, that are meant to hurt you.
