Kem Sokha, whose Human Rights Party gained three National Assembly seats in July’s election, becoming a part of the opposition, said Thursday he was disappointed in the slow pace of Cambodian reform and the absence of the checks and balances that make democracies functional.
Fifteen years of reform had failed to bring true democratic reform, he said, as the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, under the rule of Prime Minister Hun Sen, controlled all branches of government.
“There are no checks and balances,” Kem Sokha said, as a guest on “Hello VOA,” leading to the loss of representation for “about half a million voices.”
The CPP won a commanding 90 seats in the 2008 National Assembly election, and it has put party members as the head of each of the body’s nine committees.
Kem Sokha said that a rule of the National Assembly requiring 11 parliamentarians to form in order for one member to address the body was a regression “toward communism, like the ‘80s.”
Democracy require political freedom, economic freedom and social freedom, he said, adding that the system of administration in Cambodia should also change, graduating out of the hands of a single leader, such as Hun Sen.
“It is now just based on one individual, who, when he wants something, they do, and when he does not want to do, they do not do,” he said.
The CPP won their seats through fear, gift-giving, vote-buying, threats and fraud, he said, adding that if a neutral election committee from abroad were to organize the elections, the ruling party would completely lose.

Additional to previous message: It doesn't mean either that only Hun Sen can lead the country, and we need to have oppoisitions in order to stop a dictator leader from turning a country into his own company. Hun Sen has been the longest leader in the region, but it doesn not mean he is the best leader either. Having a new leader in Cambodia would encourage more competition in new leadership, and that would make Cambodia a better place.

I been put in Korng Kokma Kanh Jous at wat Chrouy Mates over work and fall asleep, didn't get to eat dinner because they let the girl eat first. Finally we attemp to cross the and my dad look for my older sister in Nimet there was a battle for 3 days and 3 night between Khmer Rouge and Vietnamese soldiers. They broke in the east of Nimet and throw grenade into the bungalo, dead body every, next morning vietnamese soldier evacuated us back to Tek Thla near Sway Si Sopon. We manage to get to Norng Chan and was dump along the Dorng Raek with the Cham or Muslim. Deads body every. Baby on the dead mother arm and no one can save them because of land mines. I'm here in us 25 years now. Every time I look back it just so much paints. I try to forget it. But to all Khmer, You're alway in my heart. Love you all.

Who is Mr. Sam Rainsy? If my memory serves me well, both Mr. Sam Rainsy and his spouse are descendants of Khmer elite political class. Mr. Rainsy’s grand father was the governor of Kampong Cham province and then Prime Minister. Mr. Rainsy’s father, who served as a cabinet minister under Norodom Sihanouk, was removed from his post and accused by the Sihanoukists as Khmer Serei. Mr. Rainsy’s mother was the first Khmer woman to have graduated from the French high learning institution.
So that is Mr. Rainsy’s brief family background. I hope Mr. Rainsy and his supporters would correct me if my information is out of date. If you want to know more about the man, read his most recent book in French entitled “Des Racine Dans La Pierre”. (I have not had a chance to read that book yet).
Now here is my personal impression about Mr. Rainsy. First, he deserves a big thank you from ALL of us for the service that his family and himself have rendered to the nation. There should be no doubt in anybody mind that Mr. Rainsy is a pure Khmer nationalist, serving Khmer interest. Having said that, Mr. Rainsy political career has encountered several setbacks, mainly due to his aristocratic family background. Being the third generation of an elite class, it is natural that Mr. Rainsy thinks of himself as superior to his compatriots and destined to run the country. That thought or belief has unfortunately turned Mr. Rainsy into a self-righteous individual who is unwilling to listen to other people ideas, especially from other intellectuals. For Mr. Rainsy is to have any success in politic, the first thing he needs to adjust his personal egoes, and be comfortable with other intellectuals. His real ability is not a measure of how successful he communicates his vision with the poor peasants, but a measure of how inspirational he is to the intellectuals. Poor peasants are vulnerable and are often exploited by politicians of all parties.
