Thailand to hold postponed ASEAN summit

Thailand will host a summit of Southeast Asian nations in late February, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday, after it was postponed amid political turmoil in the kingdom.

It said the 14th summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations would be held on February 24-26.

Anti-government protests led Thailand in early November to move the summit, originally scheduled for mid-December, from Bangkok to the northern city of Chiang Mai.

The meeting of the 10-member ASEAN was later postponed until March after protesters took over Bangkok's two airports and left 350,000 travellers stranded.

The blockade ended after a court ruling forced the government from power on December 3.

Newly elected premier Abhisit Vejjajiva said he wanted to move the summit forward to February in order to regain confidence in the kingdom.

ASEAN consists of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar , the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
