Police divers this morning are searching the Hawkesbury River for the body of a man who jumped from the Brooklyn Bridge on New Year's Eve, moments before police prevented a woman and two children from also jumping.

The search resumed about 6.30am after a day-long search yesterday failed to find him, a police spokesman said.

Police helicopters as well as land and water police would also take part in today's search, he said.

The man leapt from the bridge into the river about 9.45am on Wednesday after police noticed a blue Toyota Camry travelling slowly on the F3 freeway.

The driver, believed to be aged 40, got out of the car and jumped 20 metres into the river from the bridge railing, police said.

Two officers quickly grabbed a 39-year-old woman as she also climbed on the railing, dragging her back to safety before intercepting a nine-year-old girl and seven-year-old boy as they also climbed on the railing.

Police are yet to speak to the woman and children, as they were still in hospital, the police spokesman said.

"I imagine there would be shock and other issues they are dealing with," he said.

"Once they are OK the critical incident investigation officers would be seeking a chat with them [to try to understand why the man jumped]."
