Cambodian PM: 20% Salary Increase from January Onwards

Phnom Penh, January 8, 2009
AKP

Cambodian Civil servants, soldiers and police will receive a 20% increase in salary to become effective from January onwards, said Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

The Cambodian premier said this, while presiding over an inauguration of a bridge for an official use in Khan Mean Chey district, Phnom Penh, on January 6, a day before the day to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime, which was celebrated in a mass meeting at Olympic Stadium here yesterday.

In his remarks, the premier gave an example of the increase, pointing that if those who received a monthly salary of 40,000 riel will get 48,000 riel per calendar month for the pay rise.

He continued saying that for soldiers and police, their monthly salary will go up more due to a 20% increase along with their net salary and a pay raise based on the echelons and duties.

The royal government decided to increase a salary of 20% p.a. for the civil servants according to the economic growth in the country.

It’s a good gesture and generous of Mr. PM toward his people. It is about time. But people earn $1-$2/day and how do they survive and feed the family base on their monthly salary? It’s better than nothing. But would I’ve been better for them if you can give them raise 25%-30%? Other hi ranking officers and MPs receive big $ for monthly salaries while some of your relatives get overpaid and earn a lot money from national recourses.

Yeap, 10:22 is on crack. He's so typical of Ah Slave-oversea who lives in a ghetto on food stamps from generation after generation.

It's good if the salary increase. But I want them to increase to all kind of civil servants not just only Cambodian PM.

11:08am, there u go again, saying shit about oversea people. Aint u tired of saying the same shit? From your writing, i know u didn't grow up in Cambodia... cuz Cambodian here don't know the words "ghetto and food stamps." So why are u hating yourself? I bet ya lived on food stamps and in the ghetto and was kicked around alot by your neighbors' kids for the years u were there, but that shouldn't have a lasting impact on u. I understand your painful memory of the U.S., but that shouldn't make u hate all the people from there. There are some really nice one, if you open your heart to them.

Well said, 11:39AM, about 11:08AM's questionable mentality. If he doesn't live overseas now, it would be because he was deported from the U.S. to Cambodia after serving a prison sentence there.

If the corruption practices are not tackled, any percentage increase will still goes to waste. The real benefactors are the CPP elite and their cronies. Just go around Phnom Penh and see how many state properties are swapped and ended up in flooded areas. Civil servants will have to use that 20% increase on their boat trips to work during the raining season while the food prices are not going down.

I agree with 10:22 and 11:08.

In addition, almost all the welfare recipients like to go to visit in Cambodia so many times a year. Why ? They do not have anything to do.They are all lazy butts. They went to Cambodia to spend their welfare monies for girls..girls.

I do not support the welfare recipients. They live on my tax money. get lost the lazy welfare recipients.

11:39AM, you made a good comment about 11:08AM.
It sounds like 11:08AM is very familiar with ghetto and food stamps.
It would not surprise me if he had lived in that environment and committed some crimes, so Uncle Sam expelled him back to Cambodia. What a waste! In French, we refer to this kind of people “irrecuperable”!

I am trying to be as fair as possible.

The incompetent government would be able to increase civil servant salary way more than that if they put more effort in tax collection from local companies and enterprises, set up ascending income tax (higher income higher percentage of tax), and reduce corruption. That way, they can distribute income better,
and have more resource to develop the country than just collecting super duper high tax from imported oil which is the main cause of inflation.
But they obviously are not practicing what they are supposed to, and they are pretending like they were sooooooooooo busy even though they only work 1 hour a day.
