Denmark's leading diplomat in Cambodia says he has been taken aback by the 15-year sentence handed down to 55-year-old Johanne Vinther Axelsen, who has been found guilty of trying to send 10,761 codeine pills out of the country.

"We simply don't understand the sentence and we don't yet know what the sentence is based on," Tom Barthel Hansen, Head of the Danish Representation Office in Pnom Penh tells politiken.dk.

His office had envisaged a maximum penalty of between two and five years.

"15 years in prison is out of all proportion," Hansen says.

Codeine
Johanne Vinther Axelsen was arrested at a post office in Cambodia last year as she attempted to mail a large number of codeine pills to the United States and Canada for her son, who lives in Cambodia.

"They became suspicious at the post office and she was arrested. It may be the number of pills involved that has given rise to the heavy sentence," says Tom Barthel Hansen.

Nonetheless he remains puzzled, as codeine pills are freely available at Cambodian pharmacies without a prescription.

So if we can buy freely in pharmacies, why
is it illegal???
Something strange in Cambodia.
Are we in free economy?
When we saw a good price, why not buy a lots?

If it's illegal in USA and Canada, why not
let these both countries prosecuted the woman?

Simply,Cambodian looks for attention and diplomatic favor.

Codeine is painkilling pills and the accused needs to have a licensed Doctor to prescribe and support her large purchase for personal use.

Simpler than Hun Sen stole logs of exotic timber and exported thme without license to Viet Nam and Singhaborei??

Thank you to the justice system in Cambodia.

Thank you for allowing the world to see how stupid, uneducated communist judges are.

This is the risk foreigners take when you live in a country run by communistic ideology. Cambodia calls itself democratic to get money for donors... and we know where all that money is going...

She should have bribed the post office worker at the first place to get out of that mess but she did not. That's why she was arrested. I remember when I visit there and was at the post office to send a post card. I paid for my stamp but did not get the change back. When I asked for my change, I was told that she(p-worker)told me, she has no change. I felt funny and walked away.
What a corrupt system!

As a Westerner living in Cambodia, I think you Khmer people are the dumbest people on earth. I've been to a lot of countries, but I have not seen any people as dumb as you. It no wonder that your prettiest women would rather go out 60-year-old white guys than their own kind.

I love my Khmer people. But the justice system in srok Khmer is being practiced by the corrupt and greedy individuals who give sentence and wait for the bribe to come their way. Ah kum ruok oss nih.

These low life Khmers are the shame for Cambodia. They are depicable and without a doubt they can be so cruel like a tiger if caught by the tail.

The damn low life is the shame of the Khmer race who can't even write a good article in Khmer.

And I suspect that the beginning of all this is that the postal worker perhaps thought the package contained some real valuable that he can steal and that he decided to break open the package and only to conceal his hidden crime by reporting what he found to the authority.

May the God give justice in the matter and bless Johanne Vinther. And may the good people come to her assistance without delay.

Puok ah thoark teap oss nih tveu oy chun jeat Khmer ab orn heuy.
