PHNOM PENH (AFP) — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has departed for oil-rich Kuwait in his first-ever visit to the Middle East, aimed at expanding business and trade ties.
Hun Sen was accompanied by a number of high-ranking government officials and business people as he left on the four-day trip on a plane provided by Kuwait.
"This visit will lead to the development in the future between Cambodia and Kuwait, and between Cambodia and other countries in the Middle East," Foreign Minister Hor Namhong told reporters.
During the visit, officials are scheduled to sign agreements on Kuwaiti technical aid to build a hydro-power plant, irrigation systems and roads in the impoverished Southeast Asian nation, the minister said.
Officials will also agree to direct flights between the two nations to boost tourism, he said.
Hor Namhong, who is accompanying Hun Sen, said the premier would also hold discussions about rice, trade exchange and investments.
Kuwaiti premier Sheikh Nasser Mohammed al-Ahmed al-Sabah visited Cambodia and inked trade deals last August, while Phnom Penh is also looking into land-lease agreements with Kuwait.
Kuwait granted Cambodia a 546-million-dollar agricultural loan in August in return for crop production.
Impoverished Cambodia has climbed back from decades of civil unrest to emerge as one of the region's most vibrant economies, attracting increasing foreign investment.
Cambodian officials have also said they hope Middle East governments will help train local experts on the petroleum industry, which is starting to take root after the discovery of offshore deposits.

Hun Sen has his good logic, but Cambodia will loss its sovereignty
Hun Sen is using a good logic for his personal gains such as power, wealth and self-interest. But his rhetoric is surely deteriorating Cambodia's future freedom and national sovereign integrity.
It is unarguable that January 07 are mixing with freedom from brutality and experiencing foreign invasion over Cambodia.
So, this 30 years from the Khmer Rouge brutality is meaningful for Cambodia because Khmer Rouge is not fearful to Cambodia any more. But what is fearful is that the influence and domination of foreigner VN is still overwhelmingly spreading in Cambodia. No body can deny the eternal relationship of Hun Sen and Vietnam (I mean this because not all CPP's members are agreeing with Hun Sen to bend down before Hanoi by celebrating and valuing this January 07 day).
More than this, Hun Sen is good and he is the spearhead to do whatever he can to divide and split Cambodia society into pieces. His speech likes this is to intentionally divide Cambodian peoples into small groups so that his boss, the VN, can take advantage and take over Cambodia easily, eventually.
In short, all Cambodian political parties should pursue their national interests as their absolutely goal. Hun Sen should not say that unless opposition party can control the government, so that they can eliminate January 07 and to celebrate the day of October 23. Saying this is ignorantly dividing Cambodian people and it is stupidly for a national leader.
When KR regime is totally disappeared and KR trial is ongoing performing, it is truly useless to recognize or celebrate the day of January 07, the foreign invasion in Cambodia. Whatever, they want to legitimize the day of January 07, this day is still not making any good for Cambodia's future freedom and national sovereign integrity.
Only October 23, that all Cambodian political parties shook hand to end the internal civil wars and shouldered to build our nation. Without October 23, how can we have current national constitution, monarchy, foreign aids, and others...?
Someone may argue that without January 07, we don't have October 23, but as you know that argument is just a self-interest rhetoric with short-sighted and puppetic leadership by prostrating the foreigner VN.

if hunkvak wanted to do business or invest with the middle east, he better make sure that he deals with the money only not the people. Khmer don't want another people flooded from over there because of the money like the chinese and the vietnamese. hunxen must be careful in dealing with the middle east people, b/c they are unlike khmer. remember that old champa...just a thought.
Don't get smart, meeh jkout (Socheata)!
Some people are not comfortable in a fast moving operation. They want more time to think or maybe procrastinate.I believe it won't work here. You have to think fast and not let the decision stack up.
Kuwait granted Cambodia $546,000,000 for agricultural loan and return for crop production. What's do you think? Is it's good deal or bad deal?
Good Luck on the mission!
I favor all positive relationship beyond the Siam and the Viet border! Cambodia can no longer depend on traditional relationship with the Siam and the Viet which only encourage their naked aggression on Cambodia! And diplomatic relationship Kuwait is one more steps to empower Cambodian people and Cambodian leaders self determination to be independence from the Siam and Viet evil influence.
Well then, just pack up your shits and move to the middle east. Whos's stopping you?
what school did you learn this from? i don't see it as begging, i see it as a new era in the economic development of cambodia, a diplomatic mission that will help cambodia in the long-run. please be open-mindedness because that will make people smarter and cleverer. it's probably easier to run the mouth, but the difference is in the concrete action. thank you.
To 2:13AM
Who said anything about moving to live in Middle Eastern countries and this is purely about making more friends to reduce the Siam and the Viet bad influence and naked aggression on Cambodian sovereignty!
You got a problem with that?
congratulations, cambodia! it's about cambodia and khmer people look beyond siem and youn influence as the world is so huge. glad to hear that khmer people finally realized or learnt that there are more good races of people beside the just only think that the siem and youn are the only people on the planet or something. cambodia should have a foreign policy that discourages the influent of siem and youn thieves and look beyond our frontier to encourage other nations like from the middle east like kuwait, qatar, the united emerates, isreal, etc..., the list goes on, to come establish their diplomatic embassies in cambodia so cambodia can learn from them as well on how to develop oil and gas industry. plus, cambodia would prefer others over the youn and siem thieves, of course! god bless cambodia and all our beautiful khmer people and citizens.
Hey guys,
Of course Ah KWANG is begging for more from oversea...co'z Pouk Ah undersea never stop begging and crying...help!help!help! Pouk Ah thork tiep Mok krass!!
