Ke Kim Yan fired ... and replaced by Pol Saroeun, a loyalist of Hun Sen: Power struggle among the CPP?

Ke Kim Yan (L) and Pol Saroeun (R)

Cambodian armed forces commander fired

2009-01-22
Associated Press

The head of Cambodia's armed forces was dismissed from his post Thursday and replaced with a longtime loyalist of Prime Minister Hun Sen with whom he served in the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s.

A royal decree announced the removal of Gen. Ke Kim Yan, the commander in-chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, who was replaced by his deputy, Gen. Pol Saroeun.

No reason was given for the move. Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said it was a normal reshuffle, which was initiated by the government.

After Ke Kim Yan, 53, failed to support Hun Sen's 1997 coup against then co-Prime Minister Norodom Ranariddh, he was marginalized and left without any real power. He was threatened several times with dismissal by the prime minister, whose control of the country is virtually unchallenged.

Ke Kim Yan joined the Cambodian armed forces in 1979 and became its head in 1999. Politically he allied himself with Hun Sen's rivals in the ruling Cambodian People's Party leadership.

Pol Saroeun, meanwhile, is known to have close ties to Hun Sen. Both served during the communist Khmer Rouge regime that took power in 1975, and both fled the murderous group before it was ousted in 1979.

Several other top members of the ruling Cambodian People's Party are also former members of the Khmer Rouge, whose radical policies are widely considered responsible for the deaths of at least 1.7 million people though execution, starvation, overwork and starvation. Several members are the regime have been charged with war crimes at a U.N.-backed genocide tribunal.

There are some reasons for the change, for Obama warned those who cling to power by deceit and corruption, etc., were on the wrong side of history. Hun Sen is not afraid of Obama, as he sometimes ago declared war against the West. But he must prepare things for the worst. Is he a smart dog? Of course he is!

Anonymous said...

This is not a good development for Cambodia. I hope those in the NA must use their power properly to ensure they put national interest over party's interest. Cambodia must allow one person to do whatever they want.

Anonymous said...

corretion: must not

Anonymous said...

NA can not do any thing 12:07. NA is under controle of the party and the party is under controle of the army and police and the forces are under controle of one person! And that one person is under controle of.........?

Who's next! Sar Keng?

Anonymous said...

11:53PM - yes he is a smart dog. But every dog has its (end) day.

12:07AM,
You speak out like you don't know who Hun Sen is? I've never heard Hun Sen ever put the national interest before his own. If he puts national interest before his own, Cambodian people would haven't been in today situation. Three day ago, I watch American news "World Focuss" on channel 31; they showed the recent picture of hundreds of Khmer people picking ugly things on the big pile of the garbage dumptsite at Stung Meanchey. All of them look so desperately miserable while the Hun Sen and his cronies who are the robbers living happily.

Anonymous said...

Wow! I couldn't see this situation going to happen. And now it did!
But I like Ke Kim Yan though, he is sort of good guy. He doesn't want to see Khmer fighting Khmer.

Wow, Hun Sen really roll up his sleeves.

I bet Ke Kim Yan better find way out of Cambodia soon. Cause once you out they going to find way to kill you. Why? Cause Ke Kim Yan knew alot of dark images, secrets of CPP.

Obama, you really made thing changes in Cambodia.

Khmer Border,

POL Saroeun, maybe this guy is the nephew of POL POT. hmmmm, that's sound scarry.

Hun Sen, soon or later you will be hang like Saddam Hussein. Obama meant what he said. Better watch out. He doesn't like those tyrant leader to oppress people.

He already made his speech to the world.

It is the great honor to have the symbol of the Khmer King on the head. I am sure, that our general know their responsible to this Symbol and their duties for the Kingdom.

12:53am you must went to regular shool, dude?

Anonymous said...

Sar Keng is next to be remove because he is good friend to Kim Yan

Anonymous said...

Under Hun Sen, when you do goot things for Cambodian, you either get fired or killed. Case in point, Chea Vichea - killed. Former PP Governor, Chea Sophara, fired for being nationalist and making progress for the Khmer people including improving the city off PP, building road to and help to renovate Prea Vihear, etc... Hun Sen cannot tolerate Khmer people that can perform better work than him. He is truly an uncivilize dictator who has no conscioun for the nation.

Anonymous said...

12:53AM,
I think you are completely getting lost, dude! They just put your King symbol to be looking good and to fool the fools.

Anonymous said...

. . .and where have you been for all this time, somewhere deep in hell, tha's why you act like you don't know what has happened in Cambodia. Oh poor thing!!!!

Anonymous said...

it's just a shift or reshuffle of manpower. the opposing political party is quick to jumb to a bad rumour conclusion; typical of them, i guess! even gov't in the USA change hands, too, so, why just pick on cambodia too much?

Anonymous said...

Why we Khmers who have been under our own ruler's oppression bother to pick someone/somewhere else?

Anonymous said...

Rivalry between Hun Sen and old camp of Chan Sy,Phou Thong,Chea Sim faithfuls persist since.
General Ke Kim Yan has been threatened many ocassions over his passive protest and ownership of massive land. Sar Kheng and Kim Yan are relatives through their kids marriage.
General Tea Banh was to be removed in 2003 government and so was General Ke Kim Yan.

At this point either General Ke Kim Yan will be assigned to Defense Ministry and Tea Banh is too retire and run his hospital built by Siam tycoon.

XO Kanharith is also on the way out as well. Imagine XO will soon to be an Ambassador to be assigned.

Sok An is behind all the moves and plotted shuffling.

For months ago Hun Sen has looked over the representative of UN for human rights in Camboia (Professor Yash Ghai) because he come from Kenya and has later ordered Cambodian`s TVs showing more poor pictures from Kenya.

Now how is the president of The United States of America? Well, MR Barack Obama, his race is from Kenya by his father. Can anyone say the people from Kenya are bad people like Hun Sen convicted? NO!

Opposite Hun Sen must convict himself first before look over someone.

Yeah, the white Kenyan, such as Ah Dog (Ghai) is the type of people who slaved and oppressed Obama's forefather for centuries ....

Anonymous said...

Hello All,

Look at the Cambodian Congress, is there reaction to this act of Hun Sen in terms of remove Ke Kim Yan?.

Red-Ant.

Anonymous said...

So true!

Folk, please stop listen to Ah potato digger (2:17.) He got no shame. He begged Obama for help and vote for McCaine (the loser).

But more importantly, just remember, when you vote for a loser, it make you a loser also, just like Ah potato digger above.

Anonymous said...

Please help save Cambodia. Stop Pouk Ah Scam Rainxy! Khmer people has suffered enough.

Anonymous said...

I bet you all that Hun Sen is regretting for what have had said in the past. He lashed out at that UN human rights represtative "Ghai".

This time Obama will pressure Hun Sen to take it easy on human rights. I can predict that Obama will have Hun Sen remove from power because of contemplating his fellow Kenyan man.

Hun Sen, you better watch out!!!

Anonymous said...

2:28AM,
you're already a good dog of the Hun Sen the strongest man on planet earth; why the hell you need some folks to act against Sam Rainsy, the weak guy? Are you scared that one day Sam Rainsy, by way of election victory in the future, will kick Hun Sen's out of power and you lose dried bones to lick, too?

Anonymous said...

2:41AM,
You know Hun Sen the great too thin, dude. Hun Sen will never regret for whatever he has said or done. He Hun Sen does not have enough moral power to realize what he has to his regret for.

Anonymous said...

Hun Sen the great too thin???
What are you talking about???
Is this proper English???????

3:10AM, can you understand the art of speaking or you just say what the Viet taught you?

Drop away communist stupid education, fool!

In a democratic system, the Prime Minister cannot interfer to the replacement or promotion of all military personals and to all police personals. It must have a separate power between civil government and military personal. The Prime Minister can only control his ministers and member of Parliament of his party only. It is a totally abuse of power made by Hun Sen. He should be removed immediately. If the people in Cambodia cannot remove him, pray God for his removal in the same way as Hok Lundy. Chinese Proverb has said" If people cannot remove you, the God will do it on their behalf by a lightenning strike".

Anonymous said...

What roll does Ke Kim Yan have to play after his termination? Jobless maybe if he not given any post in the gov’t.

He could be in danger if he lives as normal citizen since he dare against Hun Sen’s order before.

It’s another trick of the puppet’s regime to round up those treacheries.

Anonymous said...

3:10AM,
Please allow me to explain you a little bit about my English, will you? It might not be as good as yours, but here is my explanation:
Hun Sen the great, 'the great' is called restrictive apposition added to Hun Sen; it becomes a solid noun phrase if I don't want to split it. 'too thin" is adverb phrase.
If you want to challenge me in wring Khmer by using handwriting, too; you are very welcome. I can challenge with anyone from all levels of education. I am not a well-educated person, but I feel confident that I can handle it.

. . .now I have a 3-minute break fro the other website. I want to continue a little bit about Khmer spelling. for these 4 or 5 years, I have read some books that newly written and published in Cambodia. Some writers ignore the rule of spelling used in the Chuon Nath's era and they used the style in Tep Vong the sucked instead, which is proved to be wrong in some cases. Let me set aside some small books; let's just mention about the big one which was acadamically and offucially approved by the education departmen. I read a big volume English-Khmer dictionary compiled by Mr. Long Hair and I found a lot of errors in spelling and sentence structures on almost every page. On some page there are two or three mistakes. I think a dictionary should never consist of too many mistakes, because it is a dependable source words checking.

I heard Ke Kim Yan is a man of integrity and serving in the interests of Khmer nation. I guess Ke Kim Yan does not fit well with the Youn-centric Hun Xen Junta. Only those that swore oath to Uncle Ho can be in power in Cambodia.

Anonymous said...

I might be considered spiteful, but I have never harmed or hurt anyone. I am very humble wherever I go. I am respectful. I have never humiliated anyone unless I am attaced first. This my nature and my clear position. If am in the public where are a lot of folks bragging about their political parties, I just walk away.
I am not anybody's lickspittle nor I do anything to please anyone for their favor of me. If you piss me off once, it will over.

3:40AM, are you claiming yourself as a rocket science, foolish? You’ve along way to got, not even hear it to be a good writer and Khmer language literate.

You’re undermined others. Another word, you claimed yourself as a doctor before you’re yet even pass registered nurse assessments?

What a psychopath attitude you got here.

I did not underestimate anyone's ability in writing Khmer. I only answered to one guy who wondered if my English was right or wrong, and I gave him my explanation. Then alot folk jump in, including you, too. I know my knowledge in English is inferior to yours, I wouldn't dare to challenge you. But challenge in Khmer writing by handwriting, you are cordially invited by me. Let's try once is you are on the right sode of America where there are a lot of Cambodian to be your witnesses. You know what, I have enough courage to swallow the truth of my action; I will never shy away! See you tomorrow.

3:40AM, let’s show the world your Khmer handwriting. I hope it looks fine as a computer type-out and type-writing.

I hope you will get yourself a job as a film screen writer or writing books so that we can buy and read when you go back to Cambodia.

I’ll show you my hand writing after I’ve seen yours. How’s that?

Anonymous said...

If you are living in America, the right side of America, soon we both will be engaged in it. I have compiled three books, all bi-lingual; the first 700 pages, the second 1,100 pages, and the third, which is my favorite, 600 pages; it's about WORDS OF WISDOM and RELIGIOUS QUOTATIONS. All are not bublished due to lack of money. They all took me 10 years.

Anonymous said...

6:55AM, hope there is no typo and grammatical error in your writing skill. I’m so eager to see the books and have some readings. What would the title be?

Where is your hand writing in Khmer by the way and what is it about?

Ki media did a little mistake concerning the background of these 2generals.

From 1975 to 1979 Ke Kim Yan,a former high School student, worked as labor slave in the rice field in Bovel district. In 1979 he started working as simple soldier in Svay Chek( Thmar Puok)and was then was promoted succesively....at provincial and National level....

Pol Saroeun was a group of Hun Sen who fled to Vietnam.....

From a Battambang resident.

Anonymous said...

Kev Kim Yan is a chicken soup. Uprooted without a fight this indicates that he has no real power, has no support from his subordinates, no credibility, he should have consolidated and strengthened his power when he came to the position a decade ago. He knew what kind of a person Hun Sen is, Kim Yan was in a position that could make change/coupe if he's smart and love his country, but he didn't. Instead he was busying as usual like many other CPP officials like to do – womanising. So don't place any hope or have a false hope on the military guys or anyone. As the Khmer saying - all Kdors are the same.
