Mr. Kem Sokha, president of the Human Right Party, said that he plans to negotiate with Sam Rainsy in the middle of January in order to work out the plan to form an alliance between the two parties to compete against the Cambodian People’s Party.
Mr. Kem Sokha said on 7th of January like this: “We have experiences in the past that if we don’t unite, we will never beat the Cambodian People’s Party. Second, if he agrees that if we don’t unite we cannot beat the Cambodian People’s Party like what I believe, then what other reasons we cannot join forces? We should not have any suspicions of each other, but we must trust each other. We will explain to each other our reasons and at that time we will raise the issue of creating a leadership structure and I will agree for him to be the president of the newly-formed alliance, and if he wanted to be the prime ministerial candidate for our alliance I will support him.”
The Sam Rainsy Party president, Mr. Sam Rainsy, cannot be contacted for the comments regarding Mr. Kem Sokha’s proposal. But the secretary-general of the Sam Rainsy Party, Mrs. Ke Sovannaroth, said: “We don’t just form an alliance that was just formed and then die again one day. The future alliance must be an alliance that is strong, an alliance that has a stance, a goal and a clear vision.”
Mr. Kul Panha, chairman of the election monitoring body COMFREL said that an alliance is an ideal thing but any alliance must have a clear goal in order for it to be successful.
Mr. Kul Panha said: “An alliance is like a double-edged sword if the alliance is lasting. But if the alliance not lasting it can make their supporters lose trusts in them.”
It must be noted that, in the 2008 elections the Cambodian People’s Party won 90 seats, the Sam Rainsy Party won 26 seats, the Human Right Party won 3 seats, Funcinpec Party won 2 seats and the Norodom Ranariddh Party won 2 seats.

forming an alliance between these two parties will have the best chance to beat the CPP. but they have to form an alliance that is lasting, not just form it and then break up in the next few months or few years like in the past.
Samaki is the strong force, but no one will die for a party belongs to a specific person. Example, Mr. Seng San party, after he passed away, then who can replace him? Noone, then it's gone. Hun Sen uses CPP because Viet helps him so people will die for the country, but not die for him.
Don't repeat that old strategy. HRP+SRP=New Name will win CPP, but no new name form, don't west your time, and don't Cambodian innocents any more.

the party's name also needs to change to something more neutral, khmerness, not personal like the name "sam rainsy" or whatever. i think a person's name should never be allowed on any political campaign as it is not popular when people see it. and the purpose of all political parties in cambodia should not be personal either; it should be something national and for election contest only, not detrimental to national unity or something along that line. otherwise, it would be known as the terrorist organization as the purpose is to be destructive, not any beneficial to the country at all. so, please be smart about it. thank you.

when using a personal name for the party, it looks and sounds too dictatorial, and shouldn't be so because nobody in their right mind would want a dictator for leader. otherwise, it wouldn't be called democracy, and why not then just call it a dictatorship.
The most popular names are Cambodian People Party(CPP), and Khmer M'chas Srok. Any other names come up should be OK, but not belong to a specific person. Example these two names (CPP and KMS) are very competitation enough as I think.

Kem Sokha is doing great. He doesn't need to join the commie (SRP) where Ah Scam Rainxy is the only PM nominee forever. The HRP will do a lot better on the next election and as it continue to grow.

- Sam Rainsy betrayed khmer people in 1998 by joining CPP to form a government with Hun Sen. It had hundred of khmer lives had sacrified their lives to protest against HS at that time.
- Kem Sokha has betrayed khmer people in the USA. We protested in front of the White House with his 2 daughters to demand to his release from Prey Sar jail. At last Kem Sokha supported Hun Sen for the 2003 election. LOL.....

To those who favor a change of party name from Sam Rainsy Party to something else that is not too personal. I agree with you totally. But we must remember that the original name of the Sam Rainsy Party was Khmer Nation Party. In around 1998, Hun Sen used Nguon Soeur, Kong Mony and others to try to break up the SRP by creating a breakaway faction. That's why the party name was changed to Sam Rainsy Party so that the CPP or no one can steal it away from Sam Rainsy. The same with the Buddhist Liberal Democratic Party (Son Sann). Hun Sen used Ieng Mouly to create a breakaway faction and just before the 1998 election the party name was changed to Son Sann Party so that no one can steal it from Mr. Son Sann and his faction. The Son Sann Party died not because Son Sann died. It died because it lost the popularity due to factional fighting and weak leadership. Now Funcinpec and Norodom Ranariddh Party will follow the path of Son Sann Party because of internal fighting and weak leadership.
