Khmer Rouge trial [for Duch] set in Cambodia

January 19, 2009

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - A UN-backed tribunal says it will begin the trial of the first of 5 Khmer Rouge leaders accused of crimes against humanity in mid-February.

The court said that Kaing Guek Eav, better known as Duch, who headed the Khmer Rouge's largest torture center, will appear at an initial hearing on Feb. 17.

Duch is accused of having committed or abetted a range of specific crimes including murder, torture, rape and persecutions on political grounds.

These were committed during the 1975-79 reign of terror by the Khmer Rouge in which at least 1.7 million people died of disease, starvation or executions.

No Khmer Rouge leaders have ever stood trial before.
