In a statement released yesterday, Mr. Seng Huot, secretary-general of the Sam Rainsy Party in Finland, stressed that 7th January is a day that the leadership of the Cambodian People's Party feel very proud with the Vietnamese army which had toppled the Khmer Rouge regime.
It is a day that Vietnam has invaded Cambodia that make Cambodia to lose its independence and democracy.
He added that every Khmer people should celebrate 23rd October (1991) because it is a day that all Khmer warring factions agreed to end the war.
In relation to 7th Jay Day, Mr. Sourn Serey Ratha, chairman of the Cambodian Actions and Committee of Justice and Equality, based in America and Mr. Dy Kareth, vice-chairman of the Cambodian Border Committe based in France, have issued statements separately which described 7th January as a day of the great victory of the Vietnamese colonialism over Cambodia and accused Vietnam of controlling Cambodia candidly and openly for 30 years behind the scene. This is a great danger that has caused the Cambodian nation and to the Khmer people to lose their soverignty, territorial integrity and their national indentity, the statements said.
Mr. Khieu Kanharith, government spokesman and Minister of Information, considers the groups that are opposed to 7th January Day as those who wanted to whitewash their shame for not being part of the liberation of the Cambodian nation.

A lot of people are decent, knowing what's right and what's wrong. Only fools recognize it as the victorious day for Khmers.

Since when did Cambodia ever got independence or democracy?
He added that every Khmer people should celebrate 23rd October (1991) because it is a day that all Khmer warring factions agreed to end the war.

JE VOUS JURE MESIUERS LES JUDGES DE DIRE LA VERITE.
"LA VERITE EST COMME LE SOLEIL,ELLE FAIT TOUT VOIR ET NE SE LAISSE PAS REGARDER"
The opposition groups criticizing the 7 January are right. Hun Sen and his colleagues are the VN pupets.
Bravo Kaun Khmer!
Whatever the reason may be, but Jan 7th does has its place in our history. To many, Cambodians have been saved from the genocidal regime which claimed of more than 1.75 millions of Khmer souls, without the intervention of the liberation, most Cambodians would have been executed according to their plan already. Graves have been dug in my villages, food have been prepared to celebrate those who will be put to death. I have lost many of my relatives prior to the fall of Khmer Rouge regime. I live in of the most dangerous zones in Cambodia. If it was not for the liberation, I would have not have the opportunity to escape Cambodia and found peace in this great nation called the USA. Not just myself which has found this great nation, but also many Cambodians throughout the United States have escaped our beloved country as well. So, Jan 7th is just another day to which it is the rights that practiced by those who believed in the liberation regardless of the hidden intention that perpetrated by foreign country toward Cambodia. Without January 7th, there would not be a 23rd October of 1991. It is how each of us wants to see the reality or the order of its importance which it will be placed, but the fact of the matter is that many lives have been saved and Cambodia has transformed into a new phase in the coming years.
For me personally, I really and truely thanks to those who have shed their blood and their courage in the name of the liberation. For this greatest moment, I shall never forget what you have done for me and my family.
I thank you.
ST
Thank for the opposition point of view. Every is free to express their point of view. This is what true free speech and rights is all about.
Without it, the world would be run by idiots like members of the cpp like Khieu kanharith.
I am sick of hearing this kieu kanharith not standing up for khmer people. His only interest is his own skin and well being.
Shame on the SOB.
i think both arguments are true and make a lot of sense. perhaps, all khmer people from all walks of life should strike a balance to this thorny issue. after all, aren't we all in the same family of khmer race? why keep fighting each other? for what benefit? didn't khmer people and cambodia suffer long enough already? when will we, the khmer people, realize that what we are doing is dividing our nation. is that what we really want? there must be a solution or an answer to all of this! is this a case of "chos teuk krapeu, leung leu kla, chhoul prey bonla, chhoul psah polis"? i think we all should make some sort of compromise! is there an other way to mark the day commemorate the fall of the brutal KR regime, while at the same time, not to make it a national holiday celebrating a foreign invasion(the vietnamese invasion, of course! why don't all the lawmakers sit down together to debate this civilly, so we all can look each other straight in the face. what is the purpose of fighting non-stop with the same khmer national? when are we going to wake up and reality that life is too short to worry sick and blue? perhaps, it's time for cambodia and khmer people to move forward to better things for our national interest and stop this one-sidedness, blind-spot that only bring pain and suffering for our people! we are only hurting ourselves,if we continue to ignore and demand, inconsiderably toward our people. please wake up and smell the fresh coffee! thank you.
Come on, folks, the leading group are not Khmers; they might look similar to Khmers, but they have Vietnamese brains.
2:38am, hey, your own thinking create your own destiny! for once, stop empowering the vietnamese. how do you know for sure that all khmer view/argument, etc are a result of learned from the vietnamese, not that i care anything about the vietnamese anyway! but i just want o point out that what you are saying will only empower the vietnamese race and make some cambodian people think that the vietnamese are the only race on the planet that cambodian people can learn anything from! not true at all. if i were you, i would try to empower the vietnamese over khmer people because there are many more advanced race of people on this planet called earth, like, for instance, the american, the european, the australian, korean, japan, chinese, etc..., so what make you so sure that khmer people can only learn from the vietnamese? for your information, if you don't already know, even the vietnamese are learning from khmer people and other races as well; so, there is nothing wrong with having an open-mind and learn from everybody, even your worst enemies, your best friends, your family, strangers, etc, etc... please be smart and clever about it; don't be so narrow-minded and expect others to listen to you because even khmer people, nowadays can think/speak/see for themselves without so much your outdated, propoganda tactic trying to wrongly influencing others! you're not! please stay in school! thank you.
7th january is a significant day in the sense that it has saved many cambodian lives, but it should not be glorified as a liberation day because cambodia has not been liberated after 7th january. cambodia was occupied by foreign forces, the vietnamese arm. so, it is a day of foreign invasion. 23rd october should be gloried because it the day that cambodia achieved peace and the end of foreign, vietnamese, occupation.
Frankly I don't like the viet invasion into Cambodia no matter what they call it. But on the other hands Mr. Sneg Huot claimded the 7th Jan is the day Khmer lost "independence and democracy" but we din't have one at the time so how can we lost something we didn't have?
If i were president of Cambodia i wouldn't let all opposition party stay in Cambodia, because make me headach. They always just want to make Cambodia country going down.
10:38am, your ideas sound like you are a tyrant practising a dictatorial regime like the khmer rouge regime. don't you know that the opposition parties, not only in cambodia but anywhere else in the world, are the forces that keep the govt. in checks and in balances? without the govt. it would be like the khmer rouge regime when the leaders can do whatever they wanted without realizing if they are wrong or right. please look around, america, england, australia, canada and france etc. have opposition parties to keep the govt, honest. only communist countries like vietnam, china, n.korea, cuba and military regimes like burma do not have opposition parties and the are very poor, except china.
Wrong, most of successful country is made by Autocracy government. None is made from the stupid Democracy government.
7:30PM,
Where do you get that idea from?
If you don't believe democracy is the best way to achieve progress and sucess, open your eyes and look at the World today. Which part of it is the most successful and propserous. The unmatched success and achievement in the West is a product of freedom and democracy.
I dont know what other methods to describe to our people about this issue without first understand the significant of January 7th, 1979. As a debator, one must always stand on both side of the issue and begin argue from both instances. To have something you must first have a life which could breath the air. For example, regardless of what problems come between Vietnam and Khmer Rouge at the time of their dissolution to which one faction is not content with the outcomes of what were intended with the issues at hands, thus led to the broke off the relationship between Vietnam and Khmer Rouge. However, due to this contentious matters, Vietnam did not allowed Khmer Rouge to have the upper hands, thus the liberation occurred with the supports from the former Soviet Union.
Now, lets pause for a moment... Khmer Rouge has already planned to kill most of Cambodian people throughout the country, like I have mentioned, graves at my villages have already been dug and food has already been prepared for those who will be executed. I think Khmer Rouge intention was to make alot of "nom bonh'jok" while the "tirk nom bonh'jok" is mixed with poison, most likely scynide which can kill instantly.
Now, the phrase is... this was the intent committed by the perpetraitors which is Khmer Rouge to kill their own people. The numbers that will be executed is not known because the killing has not yet occurred due to the fall of Khmer Rouge. Lets ask, what if we have not been liberated what will happen to us all at that particular time? Will we be able to escape to other countries such as the United States, Canada, Europe or anywhere else throughout the world? Lets say that Vietnam did not come in to our country and did what they have done to us. The question is what would happen to us had the Vietnamese not liberated Cambodia from Khmer Rouge? Will we have October 23rd, 1991? Will we have the UNTAC in Cambodia? Will we have the Cambodia we have now, although it is not something that we like due to the current administration running the country, however the situations are much better than that of Khmer Rouge.
These are just some of the questions that we as Khmer must answer. We can oppose the Cambodian government and the conditions to which we see them not fit for all of us, but the least to say that the current conditions are much better than the conditions in Khmer Rouge. In addition, many Cambodians are able to travel and visit the country as well or vise versa. If you are an educators or a great debator, you do not need for me to enlighten on how to answer these questions as to the importance or least significant of the January 7th, 1979.
You will be the judge of all that.
I thank you.
ST
January 7th is an invasion day. it is a co-incidence that that invasion has saved cambodian lives. vietnam created the khmer rouge and helped the khmer rouge to kill the khmer people. so how can vietnam liberated the cambodian people if they were the one who helped with the killings of the khmer people in the first place.
