Robbing the poor to give to the rich: Cambodia's upside down world under the rule of Samdach Robber Hood Hun Sen

Oknha Srey Sothea received honours from Mr. Hun Sen.

Dey Krohorm and the Robber Hood of Cambodia

31st January, 2009
Opinion by Khmerization
These less fortunate slum-dwellers are paying the price for the developments, the lifestyle and the prosperity of the privileged few urban elites. Mr. Hun Sen’s policies of condoning, and in certain cases, abetting, forced and inhuman evictions, is a case of the “Robber Hood of Cambodia” robbing from the poor to give to the rich.
It’s heartbreaking to see the hapless residents of the Dey Krohorm neighbourhood being evicted in an inhuman way by 7NG company in collusion with corrupt Phnom Penh officials.

More than 150 families were forcibly evicted at gunpoint in the early morning of last week, when residents, including the young, the sick and the old, are still sound asleep. Their houses were razed to the ground while their belongings are still full. They have barely the time to escape the pounding of the demolition bulldozers. They lost everything. The pictures and the images of the evictions that splashed around the world are disheartening and heartbreaking.

Now many of them are homeless - most sleep on the streets or camped in the parks. They lost their livelihood and now they are starving.

The land at Dey Krohorm is worth about $3,500 per square metre. A few day before the evictions, 7NG promised the residents of between $15,000-$20,000 in compensation but now that the evictions have been successfully carried out, the compensation promises have now been reneged. The company now say they will only provide a home a few kilometres outside of Phnom Penh - a worthless real estate.

Prime Minister Hun Sen has, in the past, promised that the government will strive hard to alleviate, and possibly eliminate, poverty in Cambodia. While Mr. Hun Sen had, to a certain degree, managed to raise the standards of living of some urban people, he has been seen as neglecting the less fortunate slum-dwellers and the people of rural Cambodia.

Sombok Chap neighbourhood has been forcibly evicted a few years ago and most of the residents who had been resettled in the place provided by the company are still living in hardship. The evicted dwellers of Dey Krohorm will certainly face with the same fate or even worse, considering that all their belongings are demolished along with their houses. Next will be the “Building Neighbourhood” and the Bassac Theatre neighbourhood.

The forced evictions of Dey Krohorm dwellers have been carried out by 7NG ruthlessly and with impunity without any fears of any legal ramifications. And after the evictions, Oknha Srey Sothea, the owner of 7NG, has been quoted as arrogantly saying that, any monetary compensations are out of the question. As such, the evictions seemed to have the backing and the blessing of Mr. Hun Sen because the owner of 7NG is Oknha Srey Sothea who is very close to Mr. Hun Sen. In Cambodia, there is a saying that nothing can be done without the approval, or the blessing, of Mr. Hun Sen.

Mr. Hun Sen, and the court in particular, must condemn these forced evictions in the strongest term and force 7NG to make a reasonable compensation package to these rightful owners of Dey Krohorm neighbourhood. Anything less than the amount they are entitled to would be tantamount to a collusion of crimes punishable by Cambodian laws.

We should give him, his families, his cronies, and all his kowtowing clowns a new honorary title: THE LEECHES OF KHMER SOCIETY. These human leeches never get enough, while the natural leeches drop themselves off when they get enough.

Again Ah Wild Gorilla Fucker is on crack. There is nothing inhumane about moving people out of the slum into a better home so that the area could renovate to attract more business and create job for the needy.

Don't listen to Ah Wild Gorilla fucker who want to see people suffering and living in the slum for eternity.

7NG and associates will pay the price equally what have been done to the Dey krohorm. When the time come you think you can run, and run you will but you can not hide. For those who eat 7NG vomit will get tumore/cancer on your heart, if you have heart at all.

Hello My Dear Fellow Khmers!

What did Hun Sen call that freaky heartless 7NG's owner Srey Sothea and the other henchmen? I consider the so-called iron-fisted chap who bestows a new honorary title to an important person like his crony Srey Someone doesn't have a high paradigm of self-respect or values and virtues like the poor and underprivileged ones. I don't seem to remember their names. Well, I guess I must have temporary amnesia and dizziness due to so many honorary titles being given to “Good Hearted People” like Srey Someone, “Okhna This” or “Okhna That” whose claimed intentions are to “rebuild” the city of Phnom Penh and “beautify” Cambodia for the benefit of “All People”.

Hey Ignorant Henchmen of Hun Sen! Before calling yourselves “Srey This” or “Srey That” or “Okhna This” and “Okhna That”, you better look in the mirror and ask yourself if you deserve to uphold such an honoured name. “Srey” is reserved only for people who uphold the highest values and virtues of Integrity, Honesty, Justice, Compassion, Love, Forgiveness, Wisdom and Intelligence. Do you think that you meet this standard? If so, I’m sure that you bravely stand up to defend the rights of the poor and underprivileged ones and unjustly displaced citizens.

Sincerely,
Sri Krsna

Shut the fuck up, Pouk Ah liars.

In any case, in a civilized world, they would never allowed any community to look like that area. The owners of the property will face fine after fine that lead to foreclosure for sure.

Here's a good minimum standard they required:

Dear Meiling Kang,
I am not a personal ennemy of Hun sen at all and I do not care who will raun Cambodia government as long as he or she uses law and social justice for his administration. I have travelled many countries around the world and I have been invited by many dignitaries for big occasions, therefore I won't condone with these kind of destruction of human right and human livehood at all. I have always stood up for social justice and honesty. We must treat poor, rich and male and female people with respect. If we cannot help them financially, we shouldn't destroy their happinesses. If we want to buy their properties, we should offer them to their right price " demands and sales " according to the market economy. They cannot just go to the corrupted officials and used their police forces to rob them at all. Chinese government has shot many thousands of these criminals officials from 2001-2005. Recently husndred of corrupted officials in Jeyang city have been rounded up at night by central government for corruption. Under President Hu Jin tao and Prime Minister Wen Jia Pao, no official dare to work with criminal developpers at all. we can improve the slums by market economy not by communist dictatorship at all. I must tell these criminals too that all the moneys they have made will burnt them alive. They will sleep with nightmare and live with unhappiness. I support Mam Sonando 100% for his stand against social injustice. Areak Prey

Now the world beautification is't beautified anymore. How can we enjoy the luxury living off our countrymen living on the streets with blood sufferings. These so called elites are totally animals in nature. If they are people they would not have done that to their own people. This kind of behavior must be condemned and it has no place for a civil society.

From what I read it was the govt who allowed them to possess the lands in the first place, at the time when the lands were considered to be dirt cheap and no one wanted to go near that place, but as the prices of realty skyrocketted, crooked and greedy developers started invading every inch of the poor and the vulnerable.

NG means North Group, is a western concept of dispensing social justice and integrity. But 7NG abuses the concept.

Shame on former bumpkins-turned-new riches.

What didn't you understand?

The Khmer government is the most tolerance government on the planet. They did not fine anyone who failed to maintain their property. They did not foreclose anyone property. And if someone needs a temporary place to stay, they can use the State's property anytime without being harassed ... .

Where on earth do you find such a good hearted government like the Khmer government, huh?

Sure Misters 4:05AM and 4:20AM!

In dismissing the belongings of others as a 'slum' and 'ready for the landfill', you are only reinforcing the fact that the evicted people deserve to be defended. FOR WHEN A PERSON HAS NOTHING, EVERYTHING MEANS SOMETHING, AND NOW EVEN THAT HAS BEEN TAKEN WAY! It's nothing but shameful!

It is understandable to beautify the city, but at least do so with respect. Recognize the situation for what it is; strong-armed tactics imposing sacrifice on the weakest members of society.
Do the right thing. Provide the evictees with proper shelter and compensation. Treat them with the respect that they deserve.

Perhaps in another life, if you are so fortunate to have one, you will live the life of a poor person so that you will learn the true meaning of empathy.

Sincerely,

5.34AM,

It was this life , not long ago when these people were extemely poor themsleves: Hun Sen was a temple boy fighting for food, his parents making palm mats for a living, Heng Samrin was a cow thief, Chea Sim and others in the CPP, were social outcasts and misfits. The owner of 7NG was a bumpkin. But thanks to the invading Viet army, these ex-Khmer Rouge henchmen have proved to be worse than their former oppressers.

My Dear Areak Prey,

I did not mean to imply that you or others are a personal "Enemies" of Hun Sen, but rather "Enemies" of his way of thinking as reflected by the mistreatment of evictees and other similar social injustice.

Perhaps from your worldly travels you have become familiar of Sri Krsna. Sri Krsna represents the highest values and virtues of humanity. This is the kind of thinking that we can wish, hope and pray for in Cambodia and around the World.

Thank you very much for your response. I truely believe in good deed and bad deed. I valued very hightly of sri krsna and I won't collaborate with anyone who have benefited themselves from the suffering of others. In politic, people must have high integrity and honest to their stand. But Hun Sen is a very low integrity politician. He is indeed an opportunist for himself and his family. Look at his record, he used to be an extremist of left wing ( communist ) but now he changed himself 180 degree into extremist of right. For me I stand on my middle path of the Buddha.

Hun Sen's supporters think that people who opposed the evictions of slum people are against beautification and developments of the city. This is not the point. we are in support of progress and developments. what we are against is the inhuman and forced evictions of people without proper compensation. the situation is this: Srey Sothea connived with corrupt Phnom Penh officials to buy lands at Dey Kroham cheaply because Srey Sothea paid a huge sum of bribery to Phnom Penh officials. This is corruption and criminal. Dey Kraham residents are the rightful owners, they must be compensated adequately..This is the point.

"In a statement by Managing Director Srey Chanthou obtained by the Post Wednesday and dated Tuesday, 7NG urges residents to contact authorities before Saturday if they want to receive a house at the new relocation site in Damnak Trayoeng village, saying there were enough houses for 85 families.

Rights groups claim around 150 families were forcibly evicted from the city-based community Saturday and relocated to Damnak Trayoeng village, 16 kilometres from the city.

An additional sum of 777,700 riels (US$189) was also available along with housing supplies for each family applying, Srey Chanthou wrote.

7:15am, Srey Sothea must have paid a large bribery to Phnom Penh officials. In Cambodia, no one can achieve anything, especially, acquiring a large prime real estate lands, without having to pay bribery. But the important point is that Srey Sothea has to compensate the dwellers adequately. the price is $3,500 per square meter. This is what he has to pay them. I would imagine each resident would have at least 30-50 square meters of land in Dey Krohorm. If they owned 50m2 of lands they must be compensated $175,000, not the hut outside of Phnom Penh plus the $180 offered by Srey Sothea.

Anonymous said...

my comment might not be perfect. but if there is still people support the the eviction way that Phnom Penh municipality has conducted. that means those people haven't valued the dignity of human being. negotiation between the businessmen and the poor in the areas the city officers call "anarchy area" might not be easy but they should begin to use the lawful measurement to solve the problem rather than storming in the area in early morning with force to destroy their properties. I hope Cambodian begin to respect each others, the rich begin to value the poor rather then look down on them.

Dear Meiling Kang,
Our Krom Ngoy has said
" Neak mean reaksa skat dauch sampoat poat pikrao" means rich people need to look after all poor people the same way as the clothes they have worn to cover themselves. When you have moneys, you need to have more open heart to support the poors. In life, you cannot do a lots of thing by yourself. Therefore you need poor people can help you with physical assistance such as Hun Sen is needing a lots bodyguards to protect him. Without the poor, noone will help you with physical works. You cannot employ all the rich people because they also cannot work with physical labours. " Neak Prach reaksa klao dauch sampov now sampann". means all intelluals are also needing people with no education. In life we have alway shared with people of different level of education. The same education people need people with no education to help them time to time for their physical labour. The big ship like sampov is needing small boat ( sampann ) for traveling to the shallow water.
It is not up the buyer to execute their power to buy other people property. There is time in which is buyer time where the vendors need to beg buyer for help to buy with discounted price and there is time where buyer is dying to buy the property. therefore the buyer need to pay premium price for the vendors. In Cambodia is a country with law, 7NG is needing to pay premium price for dey krahoam. They have to to hell for robbing people lands. I look at Srey Sothea and his family, they look like pret from hell. Areak Prey

Our government is really the best government in the world that has the real williness to eradicate proverty. During the khmer rouge regime, we have all observed that forcing the rich to be poor leaded to nothing. We have nowadays the policy to eliminate and make all the poors to disappear. It belongs to the rectangular strategy of our wise leaders. You will see no more poverty soon in Cambodia. Our beautiful country will be full of Lexus and Land Cruiser with Koweiti people and their Mercedes. Everybody will have its own helicopter. All the streets will be paved by silver and gold. If you let the poor die by hunger and misery, you will have in the near future only rich people, so be patient and let's help our government to achieve this objective...

yes, Hun Sen has a real will to eradicate poverty through stealing from the poor to give to the rich. The lands at Dey Krahorm is worth around $3500-$4000/m2. These 2 hectares of land is worth around $70-$80 million. I wonder if Srey Sothea paid that much to the government. I doubt it. I think he pay a lot of bribery to the corrupt officials, but much less than the $70-$80 million that the lands are worth. If the lands are worth $3,500-$4,000/m2, then the dwellers must be paid that amount or nearly equal to that amount, not the $15,000-$20,000 promised to them or the houses outside of Phnom Penh that is worth $3,000-$4,000 each.

Legally government official should only use Police and soldier to exeute the judgement of the court following a court decison and when the dealing has gone out of hand with normal procedure.
Example: The residents of Dey Krahoam has accepted the offer and has signed all contracts accordingly with deposit received and then have decided not to go to settle and 7NG has won the court case, then police should be used to execute the court judgement. But in this dealth, nothing like that all. The buyer has acted like a robber with a backing of a city councilor. This city councilor should be shot at his head for his criminal activities. Don't listen to Ah Potato diggers. $20,000 is way overcompensated for any property in the slum, especially when you have a bunch shacks made fad from palm leaves and trash all over the places. No developing country will tolerate such a hazard condition for any length of time.

Cambodia has the right to be developed like the rest of the civilized world without being hijacked by a bunch of greedy fool who exercised Ah Scam Rainxy's Get-Rich-Quick scheme.

Ram Bahadur Bomjon

Ram Bahadur Bomjon (born c. 9 April 1990, sometimes Bomjan, Banjan, or Bamjan), also known as Palden Dorje (his official Buddhist name), is from Ratanapuri village, Bara district, Nepal and is believed to be the reincarnation of Buddha by his supporters.

He drew thousands of visitors and media attention for spending months in meditation. Nicknamed the Buddha Boy, he began his meditation on 16 May 2005, allegedy disappeared from his hometown on 11 March 2006, and reappeared elsewhere in Nepal on 26 December 2006 only to leave again on 8 March 2007. On 26 March 2007, inspectors from the Area Police Post Nijgadh in Ratanpuri found Bomjon meditating inside a bunker-like square ditch of seven feet.

[edit] Wandering to Bara district

After about ten months of meditation, Bomjon went missing on 11 March 2006. Due to his lack of explanation, some believed he was abducted. His followers theorized that he went deeper into the woods to look for a quieter place to meditate.[1] Police abandoned a search for him after the possibility of foul play was eliminated. Suspecting money laundering, the authorities froze the bank account of the local committee managing the crowds, which had gathered more than Rs. 600,000, but they failed to find evidence.[2]

On 19 March a group of Bomjon's followers met with him about 2 miles (3 kilometers) southwest of his meditation site. They say they spoke to him for thirty minutes, during which Bomjan said "there is no peace here" and that he would return in six years, or roughly 2011 or 2012. He left a message for his parents telling them not to worry.[3][4]

On 25 December 2006, villagers in Bara district spotted Bomjon meditating. He was carrying a sword for protection in the jungle, reminding reporters that "Even Gautama Buddha had to protect himself," and claimed to have eaten nothing but herbs in the interim.[5] He reiterated his commitment to Buddhist devotion for six years and said he would allow people to come observe him as long as they remained at some distance and didn't bother him. When a reporter pointed out that pilgrims to his meditation site would be making donations in his name, he asked for the donations to not be abused or used for commercial purposes.[6] A new wave of visitors came to see him and pray at his new meditation spot.[7][8] On 8 March 2007 he left Bara district to again find a quieter place to meditate.[9]

[edit] Meditating in pit

On 26 March 2007 Inspector Rameshwor Yadav of the Area Police Post Nijgadh found Bomjon inside a bunker-like ditch seven feet square. A police team, under the command of Yadav, had gone to the place after word had spread through the area of Romjon meditating underground. "His face was clean and hair was combed well," Yadav said. According to him, the bunker had been cemented from all sides and outfitted with a tiled roof. Indra Lama, a local deployed as Bomjon's caretaker since the beginning of his intensive meditation, said the bunker was prepared per Bomjon's request. "After granting audience a week ago, he expressed his desire to meditate inside the ground; so we built it," he said. [10]

[edit] Preaching in Hallori jungle

On 2 August 2007 Bomjon addressed a large crowd in Hallori jungle in Bara district of southern Nepal. The Namo Buddha Tapoban Committee, which is devoted to looking after Bomjon, assembled the meeting. A notice about the boy's first-ever preaching was broadcast by a local FM radio station, and the committee also invited people by telephone. Around three thousand people gathered to listen to Bomjon's address. A video of the event has also surfaced.[11] According to Upendra Lamichhane, a blogger who wrote an article and took pictures of the meeting, Bomjon's message was "The only way we can save this nation is through spirituality".[12] His speech was as follows:[13]

Murder, violence, greed, anger and temptation have made the human world a desperate place. A terrible storm has descended upon the human world, and this is carrying the world towards destruction. There is only one way to save the world and that is through dharma. When one doesn't walk the righteous path of spiritual practice, this desperate world will surely be destroyed. Therefore, follow the path of spirituality and spread this message to your fellows. Never put obstacles, anger and disbelief in the way of my meditation's mission. I am only showing you the way; you must seek it on your own. What I will be, what I will do, the coming days will reveal. Human salvation, the salvation of all living beings, and peace in the world are my goal and my path. "Namo Buddha sangaya, Namo Buddha sangaya, namo sangaya." I am contemplating on the release of this chaotic world from the ocean of emotion, on our detachment from anger and temptation, without straying from the path for even a moment, I am renouncing my own attachment to my life and my home forever, I am working to save all living beings. But in this undisciplined world, my life's practice is reduced to mere entertainment.

The practice and devotion of many Buddhas is directed at the world's betterment and happiness. It is essential but very difficult to understand that practice and devotion. But though it is easy to lead this ignorant existence, human beings don't understand that one day we must leave this uncertain world and go with the Lord of Death. Our long attachments with friends and family will dissolve into nothingness. We have to leave behind the wealth and property we have accumulated. What's the use of my happiness, when those who have loved me from the beginning, my mother, father, brothers, relatives are all unhappy. Therefore, to rescue all sentient beings, I have to be Buddha-mind, and emerge from my underground cave to do vajra meditation. To do this I have to realize the right path and knowledge, so do not disturb my practice. My practice detaches me from my body, my soul and this existence. In this situation there will be 72 goddess Kalis. Different gods will be present, along with the sounds of thunder and of "tangur", and all the celestial gods and goddesses will be doing puja (worship). So until I have sent a message, do not come here, and please explain this to others. Spread spiritual knowledge and spiritual messages throughout the world. Spread the message of world peace to all. Seek a righteous path and wisdom will be yours.

[edit] Buddhist background

Bomjon is a member of the Tamang community, of which a majority is Buddhist.[14]

Bomjon's story gained popularity because it resembled a Buddhist legend from the Jataka Nidanakatha about Gautama Buddha's enlightenment, so much so that some devotees claimed Ram was the reincarnation of a Buddha. However, on 8 November 2005 Dorje arose and said to the public, "Tell the people not to call me a Buddha. I don't have the Buddha's energy. I am at the level of a rimpoche." A rimpoche is the level of a teacher, which indicates he believes he has achieved a significant amount. He said that he will need six more years of meditation before he may become a Buddha.

According to his followers, Bomjon may have reached the stage of a bodhisattva[citation needed], a person on the path to attaining full enlightenment of buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. According to the historical Buddha, Gautama Buddha, there were innumberable Buddhas before him and infinite Buddhas to come in future. Proponents also claim that Bomjon might also be the emanation of Maitreya Bodhisattva, the predicted successor to the historical Buddha.

Criticisms on calling him the "reincarnation of Buddha" have emerged since according to Buddhist scripture Gautama Buddha taught that after nirvana there is no more rebirth, therefore it is impossible to be a "reincarnation of Buddha", since after parinirvana The Buddha cannot take birth again. It is possible to be another Buddha, another one who has attained enlightenment.

It is reported that his mother fainted when she found out that her son meditated for an undefined period of time. His mother's name is Maya Devi Tamang, the same first name as Buddha's mother.

[edit] Theravada perspective

As mentioned above, he disavowed any claim to be a reincarnation of the Buddha. This accords with the beliefs of Theravada Buddhism, which holds that Buddhahood implies the end of the cycle of rebirth.

Mahiswor Raj Bajracharya, president of the Nepal Buddhist Council has said that "We do not believe he is Buddha. He does not have Buddha's qualities".[15]. Scholars doubt the claims of his supporters.[15]

[edit] Feats of Inedia

An average human being who stops drinking will die of dehydration in three to four days. According to the Guinness Book of Records the longest time a human has survived without water is 18 days. Bomjon, on the other hand, does not appear to break his meditation to eat or drink.

Bomjon was observed not to leave the tree at least during the daytime, but nobody was allowed to approach him too closely. Between 5:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. nobody was allowed to see him, and a screen was erected for that purpose. Many people speculated that he ate and drank water during that time.

Some supporters believe that discussions of inedia are irrelevant, and that the ability to sit nearly motionless in the same position day after day, with no regard for extremes of weather including a cold winter and a monsoon season, is notable. For example, American writer George Saunders visited Bomjon and observed him for a single night, and was impressed by Bomjon's perfectly still stature even during an evening climate that seemed unbearably cold to the much more fully clothed journalist.[16]

In December 2005, a nine-member government committee led by Gunjaman Lama watched Bomjon carefully for 48 hours and observed him not to take any food or water during that time. A video recording was also made of this test. However, they were unable to approach closer than 3 meters or take readings of his vital signs.[17]. The Nepalese government planned a more careful scientific study, but this plan was later scrapped.

In 2007, the Discovery Channel produced a documentary titled The Boy With Divine Powers.[18] On their first, four-day attempt, the film crew was required to stay outside a guarded barbed-wire fence, and their camera's infrared capabilities did not pick up evidence of a body at the base of the tree where Bomjon sat during their non-stop recording. On a second attempt a few weeks later, however, the film crew was able to film Ram continuously for 96 hours, day and night, during which time he did not drink any fluids or eat any food. According to scientists on the documentary, an average person would be expected to die from kidney failure after four days without drinking any fluids. The boy showed no signs of classical physical deterioration caused by dehydration. A close inspection conducted by the film crew of the area around the tree where Ram was sitting, no hidden food or water pipes were found.

[edit] Reappearance in Ratanpuri jungle

On 10 November 2008 Bomjon reappeared and spoke to a mass of devotees in the remote jungle of Ratanpuri, 150 km (95 miles) southeast of Kathmandu, Prakash Sen, near Nijgadh. With shoulder-length hair and his body wrapped in a white cloth, his devotees believe he attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya in Bihar, which borders Nepal – the same place where Siddartha Gautama attained enlightenment.[19][20] Min Bahadur Shakya of the Nagarjuna Institute of Exact Methods in Katmandu stated that Buddhist priests have yet to investigate the boy, who in 2005 lived in a forest for 10 months.[21]
