Agriculture Expert Urges More Local Development

Development in Cambodia’s agricultural sector remains a concern, with very little in-country processing of goods, an expert warned Monday.

“If we consistently keep relying on the products of neighboring countries and we don’t process our own, then we can’t go forward,” said Yang Saing Koma, director of the Center for Study and Development in Agriculture, as a guest on “Hello VOA.”

While some governments seek the open market in other countries for their products, others do not, concentrating on local products, he said, answering concerns that Thai companies were not buying as many Cambodian products as in the past.

Cambodia needs to produce its own products, rather than importing manufactured goods, he said, especially now that the global economy was creating lower prices in Cambodian crops, such as beans, cassava, rice and rubber.

Prices of rice had decreased, he said, because there was no association to seek the proper markets and no investment in development.

“People just do it individually, not by networking, that’s why it’s hard for them,” he said, adding that he hoped the government would work on promoting domestic products.

it is a huge market for cambodian processed goods both domestic and abroad, but no production to meet the demand. no one wants to buy the thai or the vietnamese products but they have no khmer alternatives. i urg cambodian compatriots with right capacity to please start producing these kind of products made from khmer commodities. it is a lot money to be made and it is a win win scenario. do not wait for the hun sen lacking of vision and corrupt government to help you. pull together and do it.

yes, there ought to be a large scale agricultural development in cambodia, something like a conglomerate or corporation. cambodia can really become rich this way, too, by developing agriculture in a big way. i mean, everybody needs food to eat, right? so, that in itself dictates this potential, lucrative agricultural businesses in cambodia. plus, yes, there are a lot of hotels, motels, guesthouses, etc., and these establishment need to buy their produce, meats, fish, ingredients, etc from somewhere; so, if somebody can get cambodia to start this kind of supply businesses, then it will be good money making, in large scale way. please, think about it as there are a lot of opportunity there. that said, of course, diversification of the economy is also good as well. god bless.

no impossible. in cambodia the business atmosphere is controlled and monitored by cpp cliques and clans.

no one dare to set up decent business here b/c when the business can make big profit, owners or investors will be evicted from their building and their investment will be robbed.

who dares to run decent business and invest in this lawless country or better put laws on individual mouths?

Well, so far we don't have any complain from any business concerning that. You must be on drug, Ah Jkout (11:11).
