CAMBODIA - The government of Cambodia has announced a long-term aim to get fishermen to move to farming, not catching, fish and shellfish, and local community says they are in favour.

The government last week announced it will spend US$6 million to build a fisheries farm in Preah Sihanouk province that it expects will boost exports of fish and shellfish amid rising global demand, writes Khouth Sophak Chakrya for Phnom Penh Post.

Nao Thuok, director of the Fisheries Department at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, told the Post Thursday the farm would eventually double the country's annual seafood exports from its current official level of about 5,000 tonnes, adding that it would also increase food security along the country's coastline, says the news agency.

"We will spend more than $6 million to build the farm on two-and-a-half hectares of the Tumnop Tolok area in Preah Sihanouk province," he said.

Nao Thuok said experts from Japan were currently examining the environmental impact of the farm, adding that he would request them to help fund the project.

7:08 PM is absolutely right.

I have witnessed myself at Krokor in Pursath Province... and in Siem Reap too. When I have taken a boat's drive from Battambang to Siem Reap.

Pursath, Siem Reap and Kampong Chhnaing, Yuons establish a cartel for fishes. Who dare to confront Youns in Tonle Sap??? Khmers are really chickens ! Khmers are good for killing khmers. Especially the polices and armies !

Fishermen to Farm

of course, it's called diversification of the industry. stop depending too much on nature such as rain to grow rice, or rivers and lakes to provide fish; be smarter by improvising, sometimes. it's called learning and growing wiser. yes, learn from everybody in the world, friends, enemies, strangers, relatives, etc... please be open to learning from everybody, it will make us all smarter! god bless cambodia.
