The current context will keep someone at bay, however, in Cambodia, the idea to create a Bourse (Stock Exchange) is still in the news. The location for the site is almost found.
Economic crisis or not, Cambodia wants its bourse. Keat Chhon, the vice-PM and minister of Economy and Finance, reminded about this issue again in front of reporters this morning.
“The government announced the creation of the bourse in 2009. In spite of the world economic crisis, we are always determined to do so,” Keat Chhon claimed.
If the idea is still current, Keat Chhon said that he was waiting for a move from his South Korean partner.
As for the location to build this establishment, Keat Chhon talked about a 32-story building that Canadia Bank is currently building in front of the Phnom Penh train station.

Even though everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I personally don't think Cambodia is ready or mature enough to maintain a national stock exchange.
Main selling point for a stock exchange is that it would create a "securities market" that can attract international capital and help the country expand the economic base and diversify how businesses raise money.
However, the very weak state of governance, in terms of overall effectiveness of government operations, government transparency, the companies' business ethics, regulatory quality, and rule of law can adversely affect Cambodia's credit fundamentals.

Of course there is gonna be transparency and all that requirements for a stock exchange. That's the whole point of getting this running, which is to improve the transparency of the business in Cambodia. They even have auditing companies ready to go too.
Even the experts say it maybe too early because of the economic crisis in the world but they say they still consider going ahead with it so by the time, the world's economy recovers, our stock market is set. In a sense, we're getting ahead of the game. Plus in business world, getting ahead of your competitors gives you competitive advantage which proves useful in being successful.

I agree. It just sucks that the world economy is at its low right now. When the national stock exxchange opened in Vietnam in 2000, it initially had some rough tumbles but it eventually smoothed out and it's currently very successful. I can see Cambodia doing the same. It would help our economy quite a lot in terms of diversifying the income of money from foreign capital. Hopefully the national stock exchange will work out!

Keat Chhon's wife is of Vietnamese descent just like Hor Nam Hong's and many other elites in the CPP. Many of them whom deny it and instead claim that they are of Fukien Chinese or Teochew Chinese descent.
