I think, Sihanouk will die with joyful heart in the knowledge of his infinite achievements and of a unique contributions to vietcong to killed 3.5 mil. khmers, and when he dies, in the history will bears with Sihanouk.
The reader is certainly on the right track. The Vietcong will fight forever to oust the US even if it meant they have to take over Cambodia as part of the strategy. Had Sihanouk not let them used the HCM trail, there wouldn't be any Cambodia today as we speak.
There are two responds should be made to this.
1. To the Sihanoukist: I appreciate the efforts Sihanouk has made so far to save Cambodia by maintaining his relationship with China. But you miss a BIG picture that Sihanouk is not a politician. For the sake of your OWN nation, you MUST control your emotion, rather than let emotion control you. We are Khmer. Whatever King Sihanouk did, he did his best to save himself and those who seeing the same thing as him. As for China he was seeing great obtacle for Vietnam to take over Cambodia. Therefore China will be his best bet and best friend forever. This means regardless of the political climate of China, King will be with them. He didn't think that China one day ultimately want him to be the same, meaning Cambodia must be a communist state as well. This problably was his most dissapointmemt.
Everybody saw his resignation from the Cambodian communist's party " Khmer Rouge in 1976. ONE MUST NOTE OF HIS BRAVERY AND NOBLE ACT.
To the American, he did not have patient to wait and friendship therefore failed to blossom. Remembering Cambodia wanted her Independence from France in the 50's. America was more worry about losing South Vietnam to the north than to care about Cambodia's great desire. This means King and her majority of the people just have to wait and King made a decision to move on. At the time of the Vietnam war, what do think of France meant to the United States? It was a very very complicated matter. America was in South Vietnam thru her friendship with France or don't you think? King perhaps knew that he will have to wait forever and he may or may not seeing the light of Cambodian independence at all.
The Answer was clear. He must go with his old buddy China. Oh yes, China is the great savior alright. China was in fact with Cambodia thru thick and thin. She even helped getting King back to the Cambodian's throne for the second time. Was it without anything? Of course not! It took 2 millions Cambodian people lives as we all know and one hell of the Cambodian's history.

I'm from that area of yours, but in Prey Chhor, and I had many far relatives, my seconds living in that area from Prey Chhor to Kampong Thom. But in 1952 , because of many Issarak and robbers' activities, my family moved to live in Phnom Penh, when I was 7 y.o.
Since I got my Diplome and continue at classe de Seconde at Lycee Sisowat I did try to fing out my great grandfather footsteps by contacting and travelling on that area. My great grand father was a nokorbal in Oknha moha Vichey, governor of Prey Chhor province during Norodom reign/. His title was oknha Vichey krola peas. During rebellion against French in 1884-86, the same time with oknha krolahom Kong's era,my great grandfather led his 50 nokorbal troops and ambushed French army camp on Phnom Santok.
My father was an officer in Lon Nol army. It's not logic to accuse me as a Khmer Rouge member.
The one living witness that I withold his name, and has been and seen the killing of people in Sam Lot area in 1967,is now living very close to me, 10 minutes from my house.

i think cambodia of the old needs to change their view a bit. they must be out of their mind when they claim "cambodia will disappear" or whatever! i think cambodia will never disappear as a nation; perhaps, cambodia will change from the old way to adjust to the new way as history indicated that's how people and nation evolved anyway, but to completely disappear like some hardcore people claim in lunatic. i think it is good to change as in paradigm change, adaptation to new and better way, especially to do with the standard of living, civilization, cuisine influence, borrowing and infusing languages, etc... but to worry to death about cambodia will disappear is itself a disease in the head, perhaps! i think that's what drove some people to insanity like the KR brutal regime for example. i may be a new generation of young khmer person, but i have a lot of understand about what's going on not just in the khmer psychic, but what is going on around the world as well. it is called be open-minded and adjusting to new and changes. and there is nothing wrong with that at all as the world has always changed and adapted to new and better way. this is what people in cambodia need to understand. this is called paradigm changes. if we failed to understand this way, then we will never learn from the past. don't get me wrong, i love cambodia, but i also see better way we can handle our thinking then to dwell on the past without be smarter and clever in our thinking to adjust with the rest of the world. remember, the world is a huge place, and we all can learn from everybody e.g. family members, friends, foes, strangers, and so on. if we can not be open-minded like this, then we are not being a smart human being, period. education is one way we all can overcome this kind of ignorance as there are a lot of ways we can learn. also, traveling a lot will open our eyes as well compared to staying confined to one place and only fixating on only one place or thinking. i think this is what cambodia need to think about, the bigger world out there than just being so narrow-minded and failed to learn from the world in order to making our country better. that said, of course, i have a lot of respect for the elderly, due to age, wisdom, experience, etc... but that doesn't mean we have to stick to the old way too much and not adjusting or learning from the new as the world changes almost daily. we all have to be smarter in order to maintain our old way but at the same time adopt to new ways as well. that is smart! thank you and god bless cambodia.
