Cambodia's Home Boys: Another SBS Dateline report by David O'Shea

By David O'Shea
SBS Dateline (Australia)

David O'Shea reports on the fate of nearly 200 Cambodian refugees whose parents fled the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge.

They were granted safe haven in the United States, and have spent most of their life there. But under a policy introduced by former US President George W Bush, refugees who have broken the law are being plucked out of their American lives and deported to Cambodia.

As O'Shea reports in his story - despite the unfamiliar surroundings, and often not even being able to speak the language, they're trying to make the most of life in their new country.

Find out more this Sunday, 8:30pm on Dateline.

On air: 22nd March 2009

The US Government very proud talking again and again about Freedom and Democracy.

They make a great mistake. The Khmer live in the US are legal immigration and not the citizen of third class. Therefore the US administration can't not send them to Cambodia, because they were gangs or Khmers.

Before they send them to Cambodia, they have to prepare and train for the new environment and accepted the deportation. But Bush government did not care about the right of the these third class citizen. In this case the US government acted not much different than other not civilization or third world countries.

To my idea, I think that, they are Khmers (even though somehow they did wrong in the US, but that doesn't mean they still repeat such act again in their own motherland. I think they have brain and thoughts like everyone. They just need times...If the US government would not deport them to Cambodia, where else do you think the most appropriate place for the truely born Khmers (both blood and flesh) be sent to? I think that Most of them are no longer gangs, and probably we might learn some gaps of life treatment in the US. We might want to learn from their experience what has pushed to be like that while there were in the US? probably they were less treated from the US or Families like others...

Just an idea...Kon Khmer

Sorry if my ideas are not in line with some commenters

This is another one of pouk Ah Scam Rainxy Dirty tactic to wipe out the Khmer culture. Soon Cambodia will be full of gangs and no virgin older than 14 years all. Everyone will have to marry with a worn out whore.

5:47 PM
I don't want to know, who you are, but I respect you as a Khmer. You sure have a Khmer Value of life and please don't use the word "Ah" to another Khmer.

I agree with 5:47. you can look at them and immagine. These two guys are real gangs. When they come to cambodia, they will be Ban Thom. Why do we need them? They can't help but creat a lot of problems. I live near some group of them who have been deported recently. All of them act as bang thom.
Don't accept them i hope the government will do something with this group of people because they are Bath Sankum in the US and they will be Bath Phsar in Cambodia.

Mr. O'Shea needs to get his fact straight. This policy was introduced by the Clinton administration in 1996.

2:16
You're hoping there will be a plane crash so these won't make it to Cambodia. How about the rest on board. You have the most evil thought. Well, guess what? I hope you'll get struck by lightning.

TO ALL AMERICA HATERS,

I'm Khmer-American, and I don't agree with all of you. America has done nothing wrong to these low life bastards. However, they chose this way of life. No one has forced them into this kind of bullshit. There are plenty of education, financial aids, and plenty of opportunities here. However, these ignorants chose this way of life. Therefore, no one should blame the USA for theirs fucken mistakes in life.

I have lived in NY for over twenty years without any single relative around. I managed to be sucessful in life. I'm sorry NO PITY YOU. I hope Cambodia will cure your bad behavoir.

USA has gave these bastards a chance, but they took it for granted. NOW, they blamed this on USA. OH PLEASE, I don't buy your story. There is no one to blame, but yourself. You always wanted to be a tought guy, now you got it.

I love you all Khmer all over world. Pls keep educate yourself. Never too late!

I still don't understand this guy (9:37AM) Every time he speaks out, he always used Ah or Scam Rainxy etc. He must be a psychic. Hasn't he nice and soft words to speak out? Must be uneducated chap!!

This person (9:37AM) may have a severe mental disorder called dementia praecox. Mental disease like that won't be cured unless this person seek a professional help or take medecine or otherwise the delusion seeing the same person like seeing Rainsy in every second will lead to destroy the brain.

Oh zip it, ah potato digger (9:05). The Khmer didn't turn evil by themselves in the US, and you know it. At least, they didn't turn evil here. Therefore, stop pointing finger at the world. It's time to learn to be accountable for your stupidity, alright?

First of all the policy of allowing deportation of Legal Permanent Residents (LPR) to Cambodia was agreed to by the Royal Government (RGC), however, the RGC could change the policy and deportations to Cambodia would stop. The current US law allows any LPR to go through deportation proceedings if they committed certain state misdemeanors and certain state felonies which are considered "federal felonies", i.e. even simple possession of small amounts of meth, domestic violence abuse, etc. Those who don't qualify for Relief i.e. cessation of deportation are deported. For the most part, these deportees have plead guilty or been convicted of minor crimes so it's extremely unfair to uproot them from their families and deport them. Many deportees speak poor or very little Khmer and have never been to Cambodia prior to deportation.
