Several government officials urged the population, as well as professionals in the song industry to stop distributing songs with pornographic innuendo lyrics.

Through an announcement distributed on 13 March, Him Chhem, the minister of Culture, tried to put to an end the broadcasting of all songs containing pornographic innuendos or vulgar language. To the minister, these lyrics seriously attack the costume, tradition, and social values in the country. He asked “sellers, actors, singers, comedians, musicians, as well as those who rent out musical instruments for private parties, not to sell, sing, produce or reproduce unacceptable songs. Legal measures will be taken against those who do not respect this decision.”

Sim Sarak, the general director of the Administration and Finance, called on the public “not to buy, sing, broadcast these songs during weddings or other occasions.”

Some of the songs that did not please the officials from the ministry of Culture are: “Krapeu min toan thom” (the crocodile that has not grown yet) which, when inverted in Khmer also means “coming of age but no sexual relations yet;” or the song titled “Khloy Ta Chean” (Grandpa Chean’s flute) which is inverted to mean “thirst for sexual relation”. Another song that has already been banned by the ministry is titled “Som chhbab mé khum to bok srov” (asking permission from the commune chief to unhusk rice.” This song talks about the dialog between a man and a woman regarding sexual subjects. In fact, this song was interpreted by Prum Manh, a well known Ayai singer.

Seu Sophal, a 67-year old retired man, approves these measures: “It is kind of late to do it, but it is still a good thing,” he claimed while proposing that the government fights them before things get worse.

A seller at Tuol Tum Poung market noted that CDs and DVDs with vulgar songs sell well, in particular among the young audience from rural areas. The majority of the banned lyrics were written by Khmer people living in Thailand, or Khmer Surin.

I usually side with the government's decisions but I have to disagree on this one. Bad words or not, it's part of Khmer culture. The Khmer Surin also do it, not just Khmer in Cambodia. So, that means this play with sexual references are embedded in Khmer culture and part of Khmer life. It's just that some people are hypocritical and too conservative to just have fun.

What do you define as Khmer culture? Culture exists and evolves over time. You can't have Apsara and Angkor Wat all the time you know? People should be more open to other who think differently. Things evolve so instead of clinging on to the past so much, we should embrace changes because after all change is a universal code of evolution eh.

I'm of course speaking from a liberal artistic mindset. I am somewhat an artist.

We must separate entertainment industry and ministry of culture.
1-People who are working for entertainment industry are free from ministry of culture to express their words and to show off their clothes to attract audience. Their lives are entirely depended on tehir skills and their makes up to sell their products. Ina free world, the government cannot control their behavious at all. It is their right to build up their business.
2-The ministry of culture must also protect their security and their privacy. The ministry must also warn people not to harm these entertainment people. If we can condemn, we must condemn to robberies, corruption officials, gambling, bad words from the Prime Minister himself in public place etc.. and etc..

Good comment and good action taken by government. But there will be a big change of pervious and current traditional song following the taking government action. That is the Ayai song. Please consider this impact.

It is not a bad lyric that bring down the country's moral. These ministry need to get a life and realize that the song talks about the dialog between a man and a woman regarding sexual subject is human nature. They need to focus on a real issue that bring down the moral of the country such as corruption and impunity.

is this part of the story line, the comedian punch line or something else? it's a dirty joke, perhaps! not allowed on national tv when we have children and underage kids watching. yes, protect the family value and children shouldn't have to go through any of this. thank you.

It's the result of not being able to talk about sexual freely. So just chill! and people ought to see the one show Krem was fishing by the lake and lost his fish. Where did find it? Boy wasn't he having the day of his life with his lady? and the audience? get ready to laugh until your jaw hurt, but just for the adult o.k.

i think the use of discretion should be encouraged in cambodia, although this is supposed to be a comedy.

8:56AM got the point there!...should be encouraged in our society, not pornographic innuendo lyrics...

Cambodian government has every right to stop the nation from becoming like Thailand, a nation known worldwide for sex tourism. Good thing they are clamping down, however, I hope they mean it instead of just going through the motions.

Those people must think by hidding under a simple vocabulary kids won't know it, but not all kids are 3 years old. Teenager ( 13- 19 ) can easily pick up and interpret just like most of the adult do. They just don't do the thing that adult do and they are helpless and powerless. You need to watch it. Enough money made?

the way i see it is that cambodia needs to have ethical code of conduct training in all field of professions, seriously, because without this code of conduct law, people would do whatever they want without regards to what is right or wrong and what is appropriate and not so appropriate. cambodia needs a civil society law to govern people's behavior. maybe this is what cambodia needs to have so things get too out of hand! i guess!
