Thousands made their way to Nelson's Victory Square yesterday to celebrate the region's diverse cultural background in all its forms.

Nelson Multi Ethnic Council coordinator Evey McAuliffe said it was the biggest turnout in the event's 11-year history.

"It was a fabulous day, Nelson really turned it on."

People were treated to 18 cultural performances from places as diverse as Ukraine and Cambodia to Ireland and Japan, and 24 food stalls were set up creating a "gastronomic treat" for those who attended.

Ms McAuliffe said there were many highlights but it was fantastic to have Sormalin Tuor from Cambodia performing on behalf of the Cambodian community.

"Everyone was very excited to have her perform but she got a bit shy about an hour before the show and said she did not want to perform," she said.

"I had to beg her but everyone was so happy she did. She was delightful."

Ms McAuliffe said it was great to see so many people turn out to support the event.

"People really do see it as part of their civic responsibility to make sure the day goes well and it really did."

The Nelson region has the third highest concentration of migrants in New Zealand, with about 20 per cent of its population born overseas.

I live in New Zealand at the moment, I come here for study, but I don't think I will stay here after my graduation. I will go back. There is very racism in this predominant white culture. This is a very discriminative society, Asians are only considered to be the second class here dispite all the ethnic equality policy from the centrol government, but it is still hard to change the people's mind.

Dear Poster 12.27PM,
But is far better than being run by mafia and robbers. Areak Prey

New Zealand is not a racism country. But a few cambodian students who are here for trouble makers are not welcomed at all. They cannot live in here to oppress others like they did to their own citizen at home. These young criminals should live in a country with military style rulers. Khmer NZ

it is just a stereotype and misunderstanding... each country has its own culture and every people are not the same. Do not judge one's character as the whole society or country. anywhere we live or stay, we have to understand the culture/living style of that place.

These Cambodian students were powerfull in Cambodia because of their parents. But compare to Cambodian chindren in New Zealand, they are nothing more than a poor boy dech Khai, dech khyoal because their parents cannot afford them waste in overseas. Some time they have to work for their daily needs.

1:53,
you are right, I live in Auckland, I have once seen an old Chinese lady was thrown an egg at while she was sitting in a park.

People here are still very conservative, and xenophebic. Not only Asians, even english tourists are often attracted or murdered by the local youths simply because of their different accent.

To all, stop insulting the singers with sugar cane, sausage, gang bangs, etc. It is very disrespectful!!
However, don't fuck her overseas, it may be more expensive than if you propose her 50$ for a night in Phnom Penh...
