Original report from Phnom Penh
05 March 2009
Prime Minister Hun Sen Thursday urged security forces to reduce the number of increasingly brutal crimes and other offenses taking place across Cambodia.
“The activity of offenses in Cambodian society really fell in 2008, if compared to 2007, but it has not dropped enough,” Hun Sen said, speaking at the closing of an annual meeting of the Ministry of Interior. “So we must try to do all our best to reduce crime and offenses to the maximum in the upcoming period.”
The character of crime had become “more brutal,” Hun Sen told the gathered police and other officials, without elaborating.
“All crimes and offenses make the people concerned in their communities,” he said. “The source of the crime and offenses are young gangsters, illegal gangs, all kinds of betting games, illegal drug use and pornography.”
Reported crime dropped 23 percent in 2008 compared the year before, from 3,732 to 2,881, the Ministry of Interior announced Wednesday.

Wonderfull work cops and great to hear PM message. Yes it must be part of police job to put this efforts. Country needs to provide more resources with well equipments such as petrolling cars for 24 hour on every corner of streets. On the other hand PM needs to work hard to reduce unemployment by create jobs jobs specially during globle financial meltdown. I know PM has done a great job to maintain security, peace to the country, developments but ongoing hard works must always in place. I think above points that can be reduced crimes as well.
don't be fool by communist cpp
Why crimes are still high rise?? because those polices dept and them judges kept excepting the bribe from criminals and let them go free! that's why stupid fuck!
Corruptions govts! rich generals rich Oknhas...Pouk Ah thork tiep even, steal electriciy?? my goodnes!
It is great effort made by police. However, the discipline and code of conduct of police must go along with police once they take action. I have often seen police or other armed forces are ruthless to hit innocent people, victims of land grabbing... Police or armed forces should not take action to for interest of companies. They are national forces. They should serve people, especially vulnerable people. Should not follow the order of companies then harm their people. This is also one of causes of crime as well.
that's a good start! how greedy they are! in khmer proverb, too greedy will cause them to "bach pos stech!" or stomach explodes and gone, in khmer language.
If PM said so, it will be done. That is what I called, "True Leader".
this toughtening of police force is a tactic used by hun sen to prevent internal uprising, not to control gambling. recently there have been conflicts within cpp, so hun sen desparately tries to hold a tight grip onto power.
So what? We all know Pouk Ah Scam Rainxy would have done the same. Just look at how long has Ah Scam Rainxy been PM nominee for his party. I doubt that he'll ever step down and let someone else try.
