Rights Situation Improving: Senior Adviser

Contrary to recent reports, Cambodia’s human rights situation is getting better, a top government official said Thursday.

Human rights have improved each decade,” said Om Yentieng, who is a senior adviser to Prime Minister Hun Sen and head of Cambodia’s Human Rights Committee. “We not actually equality before the law, press freedom, no more abuse [of prisoners] in detention, and all NGOs can execute their activities.

The government continually faces criticism of its human rights record, including the condition of its prisons, biased courts, land thefts from powerful officials or the military and other alleged rights violations.

But speaking as a guest on “Hello VOA” Thursday, Om Yentieng said there were now “too many reports related to the human rights situation in Cambodia.”

The reports from different organizations were conflicting and do not give a proper picture of the situation, he said.

While the government continues to struggle with some human rights issues, he said, “each person can evaluate the situation by his or her own view.”

He spoke in language of a robber and of a communist. At present all robbers in Cambodia are very good in their right to rob people lands and people properties. They talked on their behalf and not on the behalf of the victims at all. we must remember when Pol Pot entered Phnom Penh and have killed hundred of thousands of people, he has also said about his human right was good because no body can arrest them for their criminal activities at all. I have heard the news that OM YIN TEANG, HUN SEN 's advisor bought a house in Long Beach and then sent one of his youngest mistres to Long Beach recently. OM YIN TEANG 's assignment is to clean up CORRUPTION, in Cambodia you do not need to be educated to get the powerful goverment position or military for example LOK NHEK BUN CHHAY fonished only in THANK TI DORB (3 grade ) even never been in Military training ,

1. It was quite disturbing to hear Om Yentieng with his arrogant behaviors toward the listeners.

Not only he didn't know what or how to answer the questions asked, he blatantly dismissed any wrong doings committed by the polices and the the government. He turned around and accused the victims instead. He was blind-folded and completly reacted to all the questions.

Cambodians have suffered so much because there have been leaders like Om Yentieng and other notorous individuals for many generations.

2. I would like to clarify the status of Nhiek Bun Chhay (Chhi). I know him real well and I have nothing to disrespect or honor him at this time. He grew up in Khum Svay Chek, Srok Thmar Pouk, Khet Batteay Chmar (now Banteay Meachey). As a country bor li9ke myself, Bun Chhay went to College in Thmar Pounk with me. After Thmar Pouk, he attended college in Sisophon (Beanteay Meanchey and attended Iep Khut College in Battambang. Bun Chhay spent 12 years in school, but didn't have a chance to take final exam for BAC I. He joined the resistant forces along the Khmer-Thai border, and I came to the USA.
