SBS Dateline: Cambodia's Home Boys

David O'Shea reports on the fate of nearly 200 Cambodian refugees whose parents fled the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge.

They were granted safe haven in the United States, and have spent most of their life there.

But under a policy introduced by former US President Bill Clinton and enthusiastically adopted by George W Bush, refugees who have broken the law are being plucked out of their American lives and deported to Cambodia.

As O'Shea reports in his story - despite the unfamiliar surroundings, and often not even being able to speak the language, they're trying to make the most of life in their new country.

Breaking Scandal news:

2:55 AM, if you can not do the times, don't do the crime. You are putting yourself in that situation, stop blaming people okay.

This is the evidence of the war, the self-egoistic leadership of Cambodian leaders.

2:55am Be smart. Become a US citizen and don't commit crimes. It's easy as that.

Dumb ass khmers, always biting each other.

TO 7:44AM,

CONFIRM ME AN ETHNIC GROUP, TRIBE, RACE ETC. THAT DOES NOT BITE EACH OTHER. DON'T TRY TO BE SMART IF YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT US.

I UNDERSTAND 2:55AM, I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. IF THEY ARE GOING TO DEPORT ALL THESE CRIMINALS. THEN THESE PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE NOT SPENT TIMES IN THE U.S. PRISON. THESE CRIMINALS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEPORTED AT ONCE. I THINK CAMBODIA IS HARSH ENOUGH FOR THEM.

ANYWAY, THE GOV'T IS SO WORRY ABOUT A HANDLE OF KHMER CRIMINALS. HOWEVER THEY TURN A BLIND EYE ON HISPANIC, VIETNAMESE, AND CHINESE. THINK ABOUT IT 1 CRIMINAL KHMER COMPARES TO THOUSANDS OF HISPANIC, VIETNAMESE, OR CHINESE CRIMINALS/GANGS OUT THERE.

TO ALL KHMERS LOVE ONE ANOTHER AND RESPECT ONE ANOTHER.

DON'T LET MR. 7:44AM OR PROFESSOR FROM UNIVERSITY OF IDIOTS PUT YOU DOWN.

REGARDS,
KHMER/NY

Unfortunately, many Khmers have been victimized here, there and everywhere. It's not fair for us.

I personally would characterize this tortuous policy as an added the "Bush Docrine," and does absolutely nothing to solve the current reality in the U.S. but divert its colossal failure of the U.S. policy. In fact, the policy is arrogant, preposterous, and callous.

The tortuous U.S. Policy should have been characterized as the "audacity of stupidity," I should add, quite frankly. Moreover, when dealing with the U.S. policy, everyone should know that the difference between politics and crimes is that they're the same.

Look! These kids are not crying baby as most of you labeled them. To me, they are fighters, survivors of an unfortunate enviroment. Perhaps most of you are experiencing just only forward upgrading your lives. What about backward downgrade your lives, have you ever gone through it. Will you survive like these kids?
Stop being naive, every one human being at some point did or will be making a stupid mistake in the life. Would you deserve a second chance? Sure you deserve a second chance.

So stop bitching on these kids and use your brain to find the better way to educate each others to live in harmony and make better society to live in peace.

For all those deportees, keep up what you have been doing now and just ignore those morons who know nothing in life, and you will be accomplish your goal. You have come along way kids, you have learnt your lessons, make your children poud, not for what you did but for what you evolved and transformed. I am proud of you all. Keep up the good work and show those assholes that you are better than them.
best of luck to you.

it doesn't even make sense to send them back to their "homecountry". they are a product of THIS society-the us. Cambodia didn't make these people criminals, so why should Cambodia have to deal with them?I think that's the main question.

This is a perfect illustration of (yet another)U.S. colossal failure on its tortuous policy.
