Asean Health Ministers To Meet In Bangkok On Flu

BANGKOK, April 30 (Bernama) -- Thailand will host a special Asean Health Ministers meeting in the capital on May 7 and 8 to address the deadly swine flu issue.

The Public Health Ministry's deputy permanent secretary, Dr Siriporn Karnchana, told reporters that all the 10 member countries were expected to attend the meeting to coordinate and strengthen regional cooperation in the face of the global scare over the influenza which had so claimed over 150 lives in Mexico and one in the United States.

It was reported earlier that Asean Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan had originally asked Cambodia to host the meeting, but Phnom Penh suggested that Thailand take over the task in its capacity as the current chairman of Asean.

So far, there has not been any reported case of swine flu in the region.

Despite that, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is taking measures to prevent the disease from spreading by distributing 100,000 free masks to cabbies and tourists beginning Friday.

The Thai Foreign Ministry also said that it was sending 5,000 face masks and hand-washing gel to Mexico, especially for its citizens living there.
