Cambodia achieved historical records of rice harvest in 2008, Chinese-language newspaper the Jian Hua Daily on Thursday quoted Minister of Agriculture, Forests and Fisheries Chan Sarun as saying.

Farmers planted 2.25 million hectares of rice during the rainy season in 2008, with an average turnout of 2.54 tons of rice per hectare, Chan Sarun told an annual meeting of his ministry here on Wednesday.

In addition, they planted 350,000 hectares of rice during the dry season in 2008, with an average turnout of 4.04 tons of rice per hectare, said the minister.

"These are our historical records in terms of rice harvest," he added.

In late March, the minister told reporters that the kingdom harvested over 7 million tons of rice in 2008, with at least 2 million tons ready for export.

Cambodia used to be a major exporter of rice within the region of the Mekong River.

However, due to years of war, its rice production was ravaged at the end of last century and currently lags behind its neighboring countries like Thailand and Vietnam in the field of rice export.

Cambodia have a huge potential for producing rice. We can be a number one rice producer unless we have proper irrigation system. Please government invest irrigation system.

Once we have rice don't export it without milled first. To export raw rice without milled it will not really benefit to our country cause first we dont packed with our name, now one know where the sour of the rice, second we lose material (Kantuk) for raising animal and lose employment in rice milling process.

With technology availability and farmers knowledgeable in agriculture as a whole, Cambodia has made a good come back comparing to neighboring countries in the region. Cambodia soon will be ahead again as a major rice exporter.

Cambodia is in the right track advance in marketing with the rest of the worlds. Thailand has to leave Cambodia alone by not creating conflict at the border; period.

Cambodia has been known to have a long civil war in the region; everything just rose from ash. Despite condemnations from other countries about corruption in its administration, the government has been working hard to push the country forward with fast emerging market.

Keep going Cambodia. All we need now is peace because we can’t afford to have another civil war or we will be starting from bear hands again.
