Cambodia, Thailand agree to plant border posts near Preah Vihear temple

PHNOM PENH, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia and Thailand here on Tuesday agreed to plant border posts in July within the disputed areas near the 900-year-old Preah Vihear temple, said senior officials.

Technicians from both sides will jointly survey the land near the temple with the priority of planting border posts there and therefore helping contain armed clashes, according to Var Kim Hong, chairman of the Cambodian side within the Joint Border Committee of Cambodia and Thailand (JBC), and his Thai counterpart Vasin Teeravechyan.

"We will help stop accidents of armed clashes," said Var Kim Hong.

The two chairmen made these remarks to reporters after JBC conducted a two-day meeting on demarcation issues in Phnom Penh.

Two rounds of armed confrontations took place last Friday after Thai troops with weapons intruded on Cambodian land near the temple, and led to death and casualty on the Thai side, according to a statement issued by the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Since July 2008, troops from both sides have stationed near the Preah Vihear temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and two armed confrontations last year sparked brief concerns of war.

The two neighboring countries have never fully demarcated their disputed border, mainly due to different interpretations of historical maps, as well as the landmines left over from decades of civil war in Cambodia.

as long as thailand continue to try to block accessibility to our preah vihear temple to make it hard for khmer people and tourists from cambodia to come to our preah vihear temple, it is unacceptable to cambodia! plus, don't deviate from the international treaty of 1907 that clearly demarcate this area already. no siem's unilateral map can be use in all our borders demarcation with them! we must demand that all maps used for demarcation must be internationally agreed, not their unilateral maps. no way! god bless cambodia.

I thought that Thailand already agreed to 1907 map, is it true ? If Thailand agreed to that, what's the hold up ? If Cambodia and Thai don't trust each other then let the third party do all the servey, country like Japan. It look like some body in Thailand try to drag their feet for job security.

the truth is that thailand will not respect any thing with cambodia......unless they get preah vihear.....my suggestion to the cambodian government is that start building up the cambodian army and arsenal......play their game.....don't recognize the current border....send groups of soldiers patrolling every where like they do......stop the bullshit talk with them.....they are playing game.....

Agree with 9:51AM! thai is so stubborn trying to get Preah vihear Temple back...?? khmer military must get all modern weapons to the area, and all along the border, it's gonna be a big one!

Yep! remembered thai commander said at the meeting, he's not gurantee about more clash, i think what thailand trying to do next is to use heavy machine to invade the area, this is the only way they can win...

Thailand wants more of our land.
Thailand cannot get enough of our land.
Thai military cross border into Cambodia intended to claims our territory.
Thai military occupied three of our temples and near by Preah Vihear temples.
Thailand have an ambition to claim Preah Vihear temples as their own.
Thailand wanted Prasat Preah Vihear temples to be call Prasat Khao Phra Vihan temple in Thai language.

Cambodia did not even take Thai's land.
Cambodian soldiers did not even cross the border into Thailand.

But ah Hun Sen give away our island Koh Tral to Vietnam.
Almost half of our ocean territory goes with Koh Tral island.
Almost half of our oil fields goes with Koh Tral island.

Thailand wants more of our land.

Ah Hun Sen give away our land.

This show that Ah Hun Sen have no interest in protect Cambodian territory.

Because Ah Hun Sen trade Koh Tral island for his power to Vietnam.

The Khmer peoples continue to have heartaches because Thai took our territories and our peoples.

The Khmer peoples continue to have heartaches because Vietnamese took our territories and our peoples.

This heartaches will go on for many more generations.
