Victims of human trafficking are pointing at the Cambodian embassy office in Malaysia which refused to come to their help.
Six Cambodian citizens, all from the same family, who were victims of revolting working conditions in Malaysia, have accused the Cambodian embassy office in Kuala Lumpur of not coming to their help. The accusation was made during a press conference organized by the Caram Cambodia NGO on Tuesday 07 April in Phnom Penh.
“We were enticed to go to work in Malaysia in November 2007 through a Cambodian middleman. He proposed to me a working position at 4 hours away from Kuala Lumpur, in a coffee factory. We were supposed to earn $167 per month each, i.e. 600 Malaysian ringgits,” 42-year-old Sarath from Kampong Cham province said.
“In reality, on our 600 ringgits salary, 50 were deducted for rent and 200 for the visa fee. Our employer confiscated our passport at our arrival, and they made us work 12 hours nonstop [each day], from 6:30PM to 7AM. On some months, we were only able to work 10 to 20 days, they did not pay us on holidays,” Sarath added.
“When we wanted our passports back, we found out that the factory owner never renewed our visa. We went to the Cambodian embassy in Kuala Lumpur. We met an official by the name of Vantha who refused to help us, claiming that he had no right to protect illegal workers,” Sarath said.
“Vantha advised us to return back to meet our boss to ask for a compensation, or else turn us to the immigration police. He refused to let us stay at the embassy for more than one day. We begged him, we cried, but nothing would budge him,” Sarath recalled.
Finally, the family turned to Cambodian citizens living in Kuala Lumpur who told them about the Caram NGO which is involved in the defense of expatriated workers. The NGO then took charge of their return to Cambodia.
“The claim made by the embassy has no legal basis,” Ya Navuth, the executive director of Caram Cambodia, indicated. “The embassy should intervene, regardless of the personal opinion provided by Mr. Vantha who did not want to get hassled by this issue. If the Cambodian embassy is indifferent to the fate of Cambodian citizens, then several of them could become victims.”
On Tuesday, the Cambodian embassy in Malaysia could not be reached by “Cambodge Soir Hebdo.”
In 2009, Caram came to the help of 19 Cambodians, 13 of whom were in Taiwan. In 2008, Caram was also involved with 15 other Cambodia.

I have a bad experience with him when applying for a visa to Cambodia. He is a kind of person who has no shame to manipulate his own people. The visa fee is free to some people, 10 or 20 dollars to others. Appointment is not needed, but his cronies would be first in line. This person is very ignorant of the way the democracy works in the United States. He is usually dishonest with people (khmers) he doesn't know well.
Like Hun Sen, like this guy. The difference is this guy has never been a revolutionary soldier like Hun Sen, but he is a good follower.

I am no surprised to hear the case. But, you know who should be blamed the most. It is the boss of the ministry family. You know what? Before each position in the Cambodian embassy to foreign countries is given to anyone, there are criteria for the selection. Money is the most important criteria. The higher the post, the more they have to pay to the boss, Hor Nam Hong or his sons, Hor Nam Bora or Hor Sothon who will then share with their father boss...So, when they got their post, their main mission at the embassy is to make profit as much as possible. They will lose their jobs because of poor services to khmer people, but they will loss their jobs, if they can't make money and pay the boss...They need to make money to pay the boss again if they want to extend their post as embassador after 3 year terms. Hope you understand how it works.
talking about the khmer staff working in khmer embassies overseas....i have nothing good to say about them.....I hate to generalize but they are useless....they never care about their own citizen.....that's why others rightly look down on Khmer....Mr. Hun Sen should clean this up and revamp and clean all the Khmer ambassadors/staff brain about love and take care of Khmer citizen......I would be 101% support him for this. It's time for a new thinking.

The embassador of Cambodia to Malaysia-Princess Norodom Arunrasmy is working for dollar and her sometime holiday in oversea as well as find a place to hide to play gambling only. She even works at the office 5 days a month. Beside she frequently travels to Cambodia or other countries for holiday purposes, she always plays card with her friends or holds parties and dances in KL or going to Casino at Genting Highland or sometime he has secret affairs with handsome boys and men in KL as well. She never cares about the difficult situation of Cambodian house maids and human frafficking victims. She never represents Cambodia due to the fact that she always absent from the office. Otherwise, she represents her party than government job (always say bad about the government). She rarely attends the invited diplomatic functions. Especially; she orders to take alot of money from the Cambodian community whom majority of them living in poor condition in Malaysia when they come to the embassy to certify or endorse on the documents required by Malaysian side.
If you don't believe me about the above story, anyone may seek this information from MFA of Malaysia or Cambodian community living in Malaysia, them they will react to your question and telling you what is going on and on.
Not just Cambodian embassador to Malaysia who does not provide facilities to Khmer but therefore, embassador to Russia, China, Lao PDR, Thailand, Germany, USA, South Korea,New Zealand, Viet name do not know their roles and responsibilities as the embassador. Please Samdach Hun Sen calls them back and educate them the good governance. Govt assigned you guys there to provide khmer people assistance and help students there. But you guys close the doors all the times. The guards there cannot help us and you should be appointed as Guards and then Guards should take up your position as the embassadors.

thanks for pointing that out, my dear. perhaps we should ask our gov't to reform and educate our ambassadors to represent the best image of our country and people and to train them so they can carry out their job like they supposed to do to fit their title as ambassadors. please learn from the USA if so lack of idea. take international law 101 or political science 101, they teach the duty and responsibility of the ambassador and what they are supposed to be doing as an ambassador to put national interest first before their own. hello, wake up people, otherwise let resign already and let some other capable people do the job for the sake of country and god! thank you and god bless cambodia.
The comment made by 8:59AM is very very true. I know someone working at the ambassy in New York, who once told the exact same thing. he personally went to Hor Nam Bora house and gave $2000 in cash in order to be able to go to work in the U.S.
