Canada to close embassy in Phnom Penh

PHNOM PENH, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The Canadian Embassy in Phnom Penh will close its doors in May after 17 years' operation, said an embassy statement received here on Thursday.

The Canadian government "has decided to change the nature of its diplomatic representation in Cambodia.... Our intention is that a Canadian Ambassador in a nearby country will be accredited to Cambodia," according to the statement.

The decision to close the embassy came after "serious re-examination of Canada's current diplomatic representation throughout the world," it said.

Although the Phnom Penh embassy is closing, new Canadian government offices will be opened, "mainly to take advantage of emerging markets," it said, adding that three of these have already been opened, with two in India and one in Mongolia.

Until now, the Canadian Embassy has occupied a small corner of the Australian Embassy on Street 254 of the capital city.

The Australian diplomats will move into new quarters later this year, and no space there has been allocated for their Canadian counterparts.

I'm sorry to hear that. It can be a great loss to both countries.

For local Cambodians, having to deal with the embassy via a nearby country is very difficult for them due to the cultural and language barriers and the higher cost to travel, food and lodging.

it shows priorities here.....Cambodia is not important for Canadian......so good bye canada......

It is more obvious that Cambodia has little role in the international arena if compare to its neighboring.

Cambodian's voice will be lessen, Cambodians will have to travel to Thailand to deal with their visas.

However, it is also obvious that Canadian Government are very 'efficient' if not mean towards those small and poor nations. If no benefit, they won't come. Yet, Cambodia has no value for Canada.

It shows that they are too cheap and poor to rent a place in Cambodia. It is a no brainer. While Chinese gov't is trying all opportunities to penetrate the region, Canada being one of power players retreats. What kind of diplomatic move is that? I think Canada will loss, big time, as gradually Cambodia emerges in the global arena and they have a vote in the UN. Come on, see the big picture.

Canada is cheap and stingy country! just pack up all your shit and get ta hell out of cambodia...

Cambodia is part of the Francophonie and considered by investors including Americans as an emerging economy. On top of it,350000 Canadian citizens are of Cambodian descents. Canada decide to ignore those important facts. Why? because Canada is too poor to have a rented office in Phnom Penh???

Oh well! This is a sad day for Canadian citizens of Cambodian descent to have to travel back and forward in dealing with Siem and the Viet military border guards are a real insult!

Hey! If Canada can do without Cambodia and Cambodia can do without Canada!

To whoever dealt with that office-
it was useless anyways, no help or any kind of assistance whatsoever. Canada probably realized it pays for nothing to countless staff. Good decision.

Canada never have a real embassy in cambodia to begin with; they always use the australian embassy as their own. maybe canada is just cheap to open up their own functional embassy like the rest of the world in cambodia. i think the khmers who are khmer/canadian should demand canada to have a real official embassy in cambodia. otherwise, they will have to travel to another country for their official paper works in cambodia. make their voice and demand heard in canada!

The fucking Harper Premier of Canada does not know where is Cambodia, that why he forget to renew the rent with the australian embassy. This guy is lack of asian knowledge,he even did not know that China is
the big power in the making,so he forbid his ministers
to do business with China since the beginning of his
administration until now, with the economic crisis in Canada, that he send his foreign relation minister to
China.I hope that he can not foul China.
Cambodia have to do like China, make yourself stronger so people will come to your help.
