Democrat Party spokesman Theptai Senapong said yesterday he believed ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra was hiding in Cambodia.
He urged the Cambodian government to reveal his whereabouts and to clearly state what it would do if Thaksin were found there.
Theptai, who is also Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva's personal spokesman, quoted "reliable sources" as saying that Thaksin was believed to be living near Cambodian Premier Hun Sen's house and that the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh was trying to verify that report.
He said the government was ready for an extradition request and that the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh was making an approach on the matter.
Theptai said the Lao government had stated that it would extradite Thaksin if he was found in the country and would not allow him to use it as a political tool.
Theptai denied that Cambodia's failure to make a statement on the matter might be related to a recent verbal slip by Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya allegedly calling Hun Sen, "a gangster". He said that matter was over. Government spokesman Panitan Watanayagorn yesterday declined to confirm Theptai's claim, saying that authorities were trying to verify the report. He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would hold a press conference in a few days on the matter.
Army chief General Anupong Paochinda said yesterday that officials were investigating the accuracy of the report that Thaksin had been spotted in Cambodia. Politicians close to Thaksin yesterday dismissed as groundless the report that he was now in the neighbouring country.
"Thaksin is now thousands of kilometres away from Thailand. He is in a time zone with a three-hour difference from ours. He is definitely not in Cambodia," said Jatuporn Promphan, who is also a leader of the red-shirt movement.
Noppadon Pattama said he was sure Thaksin was not in any neighbouring country at the moment although he did not know exactly where he was.

Don't let fucking Thai use us Khmer as their political diversion. Abhisit has a shit load of crap on his plate to deal with the red shirts and he is using this allegation to peal off the pressure on him to step down.

Thai keep on sending their armed soldiers to Khmer land, accuse Khmer of housing Thaksin, and then requesting our government to hand him over? It is Thai political bullsh*t to me! Anyway, what is that has to do with General Anupong Paochinda and Thaksin? I mean Thaksin is a politician whome elected by the Thai people and was coupe d`tated. If anything, the mater should be handled by the foreign department. Why General Pao Chinda has all these army intelligence spying, snooping around in a sovereign Khmer country? For this same General keep on sending his army to invade Khmer, provoking arm clash, and both side Khmer and Thai were killed, blood were spill, General Pao Chinda should be put on trial if Thai is a country respect the law. Again one should not be equated current Thai political system to a true democracy. It does not go togethere.

Why not let Mr. Thaksin live in Cambodia. We know, that the former Khmer Kingdom all included, Kingdom of Mons, Champa and Srei Dharmaraja, Southern Part at the border of Malaysia. Mr. Thaksin may have the blood of Khmer descent. Therefore the Cambodian government must protect all Khmers in the World.
Thailand has no business to accuse Cambodia based on rumor and speculation when they, themselves, are not sure about. There are other priorities for Cambodia to working on than Thailand accusation.
Thia is another Thai dirty politics to divert world attention from Thai agression to Khmer complicity with a Thai "criminal" Thaksin. This is the usual Thai bad characters like those of the Yuon!.
And what's wrong with Thaksin staying in Cambodia. Non of siam business. He can live where ever he wants, he at least better than those who grab power by military. Just a good excuse to set fire with Cambodia, non-stop. We are not moved by this. It is nothing new for Cambodians, we are everywhere in the world, we have experienced the civil war. Sheltering Thaksin is not a crime as long as he does not grab our land like those on the other side. He is a businessman, he care for his poor people, he is still popular among farmers in Thailand. He might have khmer blood.
In our Khmer history Thai let khmer policticians lived in Thai and used/helped them to fight and destroy khmer. Now Thai are afraid we used the same path.
Once again, Thaksin was a legitimate PM of Thailand and he was elected by the majority of Thai people. The one who should stand trial is the 35 billion dollars King Bhumibol the PM's maker. His arbitrary like Lese Majesty can fool no one.
Abhisit may argue vaguely seeing the elected Thai PM in Cambodia, and at the same time King Bhumibol torching and attacking Cambodia, what are these barbarian Thais thinking?
