Let's not confuse real academic degrees with honourary ones

From the Phnom Penh Post

These honourary doctors have been given to high-ranking government officials and dignitaries by a few local universities. These officials who receive the honourary doctorates are formally referred to as bandeth, or academic doctor, during graduation ceremonies, in the local media and in congratulatory announcements. Using the term bandeth has led to public confusion and misunderstandings about the difference between an honourary doctorate and the doctor of philosophy, or PhD degree, which is the true bandeth.

Dear Editor,

Regarding the article "Army not to cross border, PM warns" (April 21, 2009), the awarding of doctoral and master's certificates to 22 senior military officials on Monday [in a ceremony during which Prime Minister Hun Sen made his remarks about the military] included a doctor of military science degree granted by the Military Institute of the People's Army of Vietnam.

I think these officials would be better appreciated if they were working hard and continuing their studies at military academies abroad to improve their skills for the sake of developing our nation rather than getting scholarships for study abroad and, after receiving them, emmigrating to the countries where they studied, having contributed nothing to their homeland.

On the other hand, there has recently been an increase in doctoral graduates from local and international universities to those who want to help improve the Kingdom. There has also been an increase in the number of honourary degrees granted, as we have seen during recent graduation ceremonies in Phnom Penh.

In terms of academic study, the two doctor's degrees are completely different. For an academic doctorate, candidates study hard and prepare new research in a thesis that can take between three and five years to complete - sometimes longer depending on the country. In contrast, honourary doctorates require the recipient to do no academic work. They simply receive the degree as an honour bestowed by a university.

Therefore, government officials who have received honourary degrees should not be referred to by colleagues or the local media by the term bandeth, which implies a real academic degree.

We should have honorary doctorates in killing, land grabbing, corruption for all TMIL (devils?). I bet Hun Sen will get the most.

Actually, nothing wrong with honorary doctorates as long as the receipants are truly deserve them.

In the case of Cambodian government oficials, the isues of these doctorate degrees are just political tools to fool them so they can be faithful their bosses and beyond.

No, they don't deserve honorary doctorates ,if their background is just above elementary education. It's sound awesome to the poor peasant, the phnong,or the montagnards, but it's ashame and laughable to the foreigh leaders.

Please try to explain to ALL PhD persons(non-schooling PhD, Non-Primary Schooling PhD)to make them sure about the terms PhD, Doctorate, Hon. Doctorates BSc, MSc...etc..
I think most of PhD men do not know what is PhD how to school for PhD.. what qualification needed to go to Doctorate????

so that those PhD can be translated to English as "BANDIT"

Excellency Bandit PhD Doctor Professor General 7 Diamond Stars Oknha Achar Knoy(= Achar wat)- PhD(s) from Pahok Chamroeurn Avichea Univ. PPenh

The rights of Graduated student is to work any where as acceptable....abroad or locally.
But Most PhD men/MSc men will not be acceptable for working in some places as oversea for instance because their PhD or MSc is non-primary schooling/or can be translated as Bandit in English..

To all non-primary schooling PhD - Brief Education system
Kindergarten: early child school-pre- sh
Primary School: from class 12 to class 7 (before 1975)
Secondary school: from class 6 to class 0 ( Terminal) (before 1975) Class 1 (Bacc I)
Student shall pass Bacc II (Baccalaureat II) in order to join any universities/institutes/ Faculty etc...in order to join Bacc II exam , student was obliged to hold Bacc I.
After Bacc II student is eligible to join university by exam..
Bacc II is divided into Serie Math/ Science and Lettre(Literature)/Phylo.
BaccII Math is eligible to join any faculties such as engineering and other social science.
Bacc II serie Sciences only for faculty of Sciences.
After 4 years of Faculty - licence/BSc/BA etc..
From BSc to MSc.. MBA etc..hono. MBA/MSc. are eligible to Doctorate Study/PhD classes of at least 3 years with all exams passed.
Ph D/MSc thesis is considered as Scientific papers which could be used/based for any real works/research(especially doctorate thesis).
In BSc/MSc/PhD in Sciences such as technical aspect/ engineering study students must spend up to 30% study hours in laboratories and field works.

Former Soviet Union/Russia and other Eastern country System:
6 years in University - BSc + MSc
after MSc, outstanding/qualified student/graduated student with 5 points of all subjects is eligibles to join "Aperantur" by strict selection. The 3-4 years can obtain Acperantur(Not PhD as some former Soviet union Graduate consider themselves as PhD).
After Asperantur they have to work and stdy hard to make research to obtain "Doctorate", Doctorate/PhD can continue to "Dokcent" in only educational institutions and obtaining "Doctor" to later Professor.....
So if those PhD men/women/Generals/Excellency/Oknhas have some knowledge of only education system(process of study), they will be afraid of getting it(PhD).

Hono. PhD= only awarded to high-rank/experienced leader../statesmen who mostly obtained PhD in Sciences... and work for long time to serve the nations/world with prosperity/peace and development etc...e.g Michael Sergeivich Gorbachev of Soviet Union, the former excellent student, the leader of Eastern world who could make the world to non-communist (Obtained PhD in Agro-Econoomics in 1950s from Moscow State University ( Most Prestigious University in Soviet Union and all then Eastern world)..obtain Hon. Doctorate in early 1990s only...

Finally, we conclude that in Cambodia now Excellency PhD mean Excellent Bandit; General with PhD means GENERAL BANDIT.
