[Thai] Army won't send more troops to temple area [... or so it claims]

Forces will be rotated, tensions ease after talks

7/04/2009
BANGKOK POST AND AFP

The army will not be deploying more troops in the disputed border area in and around the Preah Vihear temple despite the clashes last week with Cambodia, Second Army commander Wiboonsak Neepal says.

Lt Gen Wiboonsak yesterday said instead of pouring in reinforcements, the army would rotate its forces to bring in fresh legs.

The rotation is necessary if morale and confidence is to be boosted in the area which was the scene of last week's clashes.

Tensions look to have eased after talks on Sunday between Suranaree Task Force commander Kanok Netrakawesan and Maj Gen Srey Doek, head of Cambodia's military division 3.

The two generals arm wrestled after their talks to ease tensions between the two armies.

Maj Gen Kanok said the two countries had no plan to withdraw their troops from the area, so the possibility of future confrontation could never be ruled out.

Nothing could be taken for granted no matter how disciplined the soldiers, he said.

Two Thai troops and two Cambodians were killed in the fighting on Friday. Another 10 Thai troops were injured, one seriously. The clashes took place in a 4.6 sq km area claimed by the two sides.

Thailand claims the area is in Kantharalak district of Si Sa Ket, while Cambodia insists it is in Preah Vihear province.

Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon will hold talks with his Cambodian counterpart Tea Banh aimed at preventing more clashes at the general border committee meeting in Siem Reap on April 27-28, an army source said.

The two neighbours have also started joint boundary commission talks in Phnom Penh aimed at resolving competing claims surrounding the Preah Vihear temple.

"The incidents that have happened show that the border issue needs to be resolved very quickly in order to avoid more incidents," Var Kim Hong told reporters before the talks.

Var Kim Hong co-chairs the committee with Thailand's Vasin Teravechyan.

The last meeting of the JBC ended in February with the two sides failing to reach an agreement on any of the key points, including the spelling of Preah Vihear in official documents.

Cambodia insists on using Preah Vihear while Thailand wants to refer to it as both Preah Vihear and Phra Viharn.

The World Court in 1962 gave ownership of the ruins of the Hindu temple to Cambodia, but tensions flared last July when the cliff-top structure was awarded United Nations World Heritage status.

That’s so stupidity trying to change name of the temple while it is not belong to them!

They should tell that to a three year-olds kid.

khmer won the battle but Thai won strategically by chasing all civilians out of contesting area. That is the goal of Thai all along.
In short term, no civilain are not going to come back. It cost them to rebuild.

Watch out the words from Wiboonsuck Neepal: Rotate its forces to bring in fresh legs.

They play trick like a fox.

It’s is a trick for new reinforcement ready for another round of fighting or take over Khmer’s territory.

We should come together especially when our country is in critical confrontation with Thailand. Leave our differences aside and boost our compatriots’ self-esteem by doing something positive and patriotic for our country.

We should support our leaders if we love the country and want to preserve our country as one despite negative image of our country’s leaders.

Bravo Khmer’s courage and long live Cambodia!

Agree! Thai may use their tank and armor for invading the preah vihear, remembered Thai commander mentions about the fresh legs?? Khmer military must not too excited about killing those soldiers, the third rounds will be different, thai down play, and cool right now, Khmer military must well prepared and be cautious!

Thai will not stop coming!

Prime minister, you have experience in the war and knew what it likes. It is important for our troops at the frontline that they should be provided with enough of equipment and food supply. If there is food shortage, they have no strength to defense as well as lack in military equipment to repel their enemy.

Please pay close attention to them since they are the ones who work so heard in the line of duty and fire. I’m sure that you know better than this since you’re the leader. And this appeal doesn’t mean that we want war with our neighbor but to defense and preserve our land from foreign invaders.

Third round will be big one! Khmer must get ready with thai heavy weapons, Tank, Armor, jetfighter...

What cambodia should do right now is to go right ahead to the United Nations security council, this is the only way to win Thai invasion, like you guy said, the third round will be BIG!!

Hun Sen must not stubborn about to go to UN Security Councils..

Thailand already tested khmer army strenght, the only way they can win khmer army is to use their heavy machine to invade Preah Vihear Temple, they will not giving up easily...

Let's them come...Khmer will beat them to the bone. Tanks do not climb mountain easily. We can destroy tanks with a simple anti-tank missiles...

In Thai Khmer become Khmern. We are not Khmern, we are KHMER. Preah Vihear is alway PREAH VIHEAR.

I am confident if our troops equip. enough with anti-tank and Stinger or SAM sites installed in the area to make Thai think twice before they act and look right in the eyes of Khmer troops.

Thai is stupid if they sent F16 to bomb cambodia. F15/F16 is good for dog fight, not for ground attack. A SAM would be happy to welcome them.

Khmer Soldier,

I think if Siem's theft Army is not learn the lesson last Friday and dares to provoke the third round fighting by using heavy artillery or jet fighting, Khmer Army can use BM 21. BM 21 can fire 40 rockets per time, range more than 7Km and do the heavy damage around 2Km squares.

So, our Khmer people don't worry about it, we are confident to the capability of our Khmer soldiers in fighting with Siem's theft. The more they jump to high when they falling back, it will hit them harder.

Cheers
