Thai, Cambodian army officers hold talks after border gunfire [-Thai troops deliberately provoking Cambodian soldiers?]

BANGKOK, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Local-level Thai army officers were in the process to hold talk with those of Cambodian army officers after the two sides exchanged gunfire briefly early Friday morning on a disputed border area, Thai army spokesman Colonel Sansern Khaewkamnerd said.

The exchange of gunfire occurred after Thai soldiers went to tell around 20 Cambodian soldiers, who were at Tramareu area that Tramareu [Veal Entry in Khmer] belongs to Thailand, so they should not have entered, the Thai army spokesman told Xinhua during a telephone interview.

After the two sides separated from their meeting at Tramareu area, it was the Cambodian side that started opening fire, said the Thai army spokesman.

After the Thai soldiers did hear the shooting from the Cambodian side, they did fire back, said Colonel Sansern.

Meanhwile, Phay Siphan, Cambodian spokesman of the Council of Ministers, said the crossfire occurred around 07:15 local time (0015GMT), after a number of Thai soldiers trespassed on the Eagle Field, a piece of Cambodian soil.

According to a report by the website of Thai-language newspaper Thai Rath, the Cambodian soldiers claimed the shooting from their side was the accident.

By mid-Friday there was no report of casualty from the two sides.

On Thursday a Thai soldier during his patrol task stepped on a landmine and lost a leg at Tramareu area, and it was suspected that the landmine was planted by the Cambodian soldiers, Colonel Sansern said.

Tramareu area, which is around one kilometer from Preah Vihear temple, is in Kantalak district of Thailand's northeastern province of Sisaket, according to the Thai army spokesman.

In July last year, the tension over the long-disputed territory of the two countries started after the 11th century Preah Vihear temple at the border was granted UNESCO World Heritage status.

The two countries' troops clashed in the area in October and four soldiers died. The border dispute has not been resolved during subsequent talks by the two countries.

The two neighboring countries have never fully demarcated their disputed border, due partly to landmines left over from decades of war in Cambodia.

Thai and Cambodian troops exchanged gunfire briefly on Friday in a disputed area on their border, a Thai official said, raising tensions that erupted into a deadly clash last year.

The exchange of shots occurred about 7.10am after Cambodian soldiers went to investigate the area where a Thai soldier stepped on a landmine on Thursday and lost a leg, Si Sa Ket governor Seni Chittakasem said.

"There is no report of loss (of life) on the Thai side and it's ended now,'' he said.

The trouble flared one kilometre inside the disputed territory, the governor said.

A Cambodian soldier stationed at the border said the gunfire had further raised tensions between troops, but disputed that Thai soldiers had fired any shots.

"A group of Thai soldiers this morning entered Cambodian territory and Cambodian troops opened fire,'' Yeim Kheang told AFP by telephone.

"The situation is now tense... the Thai troops did not fire back,'' he said.

Thailand's foreign ministry immediately accused Cambodia of violating its sovereignty and said it would be sending a note of protest to authorities in Phnom Penh.

"We had to retaliate because Cambodians opened fire at Thai soldiers first. We want to reiterate that this area is our territory,'' ministry spokesman Tharit Charungvat told AFP.

There was no immediate comment from Cambodian authorities.

The landmine incident a day earlier had put Cambodian troops on "high alert'' he said, two days after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen warned Thailand there would be fighting if its troops crossed their disputed frontier.

Tensions over the long-disputed territory flared in July last year after the 11th century Preah Vihear temple at the border was granted Unesco World Heritage status. Troops clashed in the area in October and four soldiers died.

Subsequent talks between Cambodia and Thailand have not resolved the dispute.
The border between the two countries has never been fully demarcated, in part because it is littered with landmines left over from decades of war in Cambodia.

Hun Sen said, if the ECCC indict him and his Khmer Rouge gangs, he will turn Cambodia into a Killing Field again.

Hun Sen threaten a Khmer Rouge war again.

Hun Sen threaten to massacre thousands of innocent Khmer peoples again.

We gotta take Hun Sen's threat seriously.

I am asking the United Nation to come to Cambodia immediately to stop Hun Sen from turning Cambodia into a Killing Field.

Ah Khmer Krob Cheat. Hun Sen simply said that prosecuting more Khmer Rouge could eventually lead the already integrated former Khmer Rouge officers, numbered in ten of thousands, to lose trust in the government's oath of national reconciliation and forgiveness and go back into the jungle for the fear of prosecution. You dirty political tool needs to stop with your cheap shots. Learn ethics and morality if you want to call yourself a civilized human being.

In a time of national crisis against foreign invaders, you still try to take a cheap shot at your own Khmer people? Ah Krop Cheat. If there is anyone to be executed, it should be you for putting your fucking politics before the nation. Fuck you Ah Krop CHeat.

For the rest of Khmer, we need to stand united at this time of crisis. Thailand has been testing our strength and perseverance in resisting their provocation. We need Khmer to be one.

Divided Khmer die, United Khmer live.

Cambodia should fight its neighboring enemies until the last soldier fall. That could show the spirit of Khmer. If we don't have external enemy, the our own people can be a substitue.

This is not the way to show your educational level and to manipulate the information.
The PM Mr. Hun Sen did not say "He will turn Cambodia into the new Killing Fields"
Of course I am a CCP supporter or agree all about the leadership in Cambodia, but please leave the Khmer citizen have a little peace and freedom.

did you know the thai are trying to block access to cambodia's preah vihear temple from claiming the surrounding lands. clever of them, huh! this way they can brag to the world that accessibility is only possible from siem side. very clever, isn't it? i don't think khmer will allow that to happen! khmer people, of course, want easy access to our 900-year old temple that our khmer ancestors had built amongst numerous ancient temples from the era of the great khmer empire that was founded on the southeast asian peninsula. if the siem thieves think they are smart, let me tell them that khmer people in this day and age are just as smart as they are! god bless cambodia and all khmer people.
